CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: Another celebrity in the spotlight tonight is Evan Marriott, the star of the reality show, "Joe Millionaire." He's now hosting a new dating show, called "Fake a Date."
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
EVAN MARRIOTT, HOST: One single guy out on the town with two girls. One of them is a lover, available and interested. The other, a liar, already taken.
In the end, if he picks the lover, then they will win a romantic getaway. But if he picks the liar, then she and her real boyfriend will steal the trip.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
LIN: Well, he's also done his fair share of dating this year. So we thought who better to ask our last call question tonight, what's your advice to get a date New Year's Eve? I spoke to Evan earlier today and asked him, based on the premise of his new show, how does a girl really know that a guy, who's asked her out, is really interested?
MARRIOTT: You know, relationships or anything you want to start as far as relationship, is based on trust. And you know, frankly, if there's a date before a guy asks a girl out for New Year's, or asks her out for a second or third date, you know, I think it's just the tried and true, you know, scenario of is the guy listening? I mean, is the guy listening to her needs and wants, things that she likes, hobbies? Is he paying attention to her? Or is he just staring off in space or looking at the waitress, you know, that's over serving drinks to someone else?
And I think that's how a girl, you know, can tell.
LIN: Yes.
MARRIOTT: You know, it's all about how much attention a guy can pay to a woman, because women want to be paid attention to.
LIN: So is it too late for a girl to get a date now? Is there a cutoff point where, you know, she -- if a guy asks her now, it means that you know...
MARRIOTT: No, actually it's not too late. You know, and in fact, I'm in a scenario right now that I'm waiting for a response.
LIN: Oh.
MARRIOTT: So it's interesting.
LIN: And you think this person's going to say no?
MARRIOTT: It's interesting that -- yes, as a matter of fact, she's not been very responsive so far. So...
LIN: You don't have a date for New Year's Eve?
MARRIOTT: I do not have a date for New Year's.
LIN: So what's the strategy? What's the plan?
MARRIOTT: I have -- well, it's get on a plane and get back to Los Angeles.
LIN: Do something about it.
MARRIOTT: Yes, you can't wait around forever, people.
LIN: All right, so what's the best -- what do you think is the ideal New Year's Eve date?
MARRIOTT: Oh, well, it depends -- I think it depends on the person. If you're a party, you know, if you're a party person, then obviously you're going to go looking for the wildest, you know, dancing on the bar, you know, clothes flying all over the place kind of party that you can. If you're into something very mellow with friends, then that's something you're going to gravitate towards. I don't -- I think that varies. I think that depends on the individual.
LIN: So for this person you have in mind, who is this girl, by the way, Evan?
MARRIOTT: I don't think that names are important.
LIN: Oh, really? OK.
MARRIOTT: She's a local girl in Virginia Beach.
LIN: Oh, yes?
MARRIOTT: Yes.
LIN: She's a down home girl?
MARRIOTT: Yes. Well, I thought she was. So we'll see.
LIN: So what's your plan for her? I mean, if taking her, what is your ideal date with her? What do you want to do?
MARRIOTT: Well, I think, you know, I think, you know, from what I've heard and from what she said it'll either be a quiet night with friends and family or, you know, because I think that's just more -- I think where there's more words about...
LIN: Because your life has changed tremendously. I mean, first of all, I imagine it's got to be number one, pretty easy for you to get a date. And when you get a date, that girl's expectations has to be just huge.
MARRIOTT: Her patience? Is that what you said?
LIN: Just that it must be a lot easier for you to get a date now.
MARRIOTT: Oh, I wouldn't say that.
LIN: Given your fame and -- really?
MARRIOTT: I wouldn't say that, no.
LIN: Why?
MARRIOTT: Because I think conclusions are drawn before I'm actually met. So girls already have it in their mind whether they like me or they don't. And it's based on what they've heard or what they -- and what they don't really know.
So I -- it's actually been more difficult since the show to get a date.
LIN: So what are -- what have you -- what impressions have they had about you that have been wrong?
MARRIOTT: Well, it's amazing, because you get two types of girls. You get the ones that act like, you know, giggly fools. And you kind of are going, do they really like me for me? Or do they like me because I was on the show? Or you get the girl that is going to show -- it's like it's funny because a lot of girls that I've met, it's like they're going to show me that they're not going to give me the time of day because they, you know, it's kind of weird. It's a weird reaction.
LIN: Oh, like you're playing hard to get.
MARRIOTT: Yes.
LIN: And that should work with you.
MARRIOTT: Yes.
LIN: So what does work for you?
MARRIOTT: You know, I like outgoing girls. I like girls that are very -- I don't mind a girl that's outspoken. There's nothing worse than a girl that can't come, you know, that can't come out from behind, you know, the door to kind of say hi. You know, she's afraid her shadow. And you know, I -- don't know. I just...
LIN: So what's the deadline for this girl in Virginia Beach to give you an answer about New Year's Eve?
MARRIOTT: What's the deadline?
LIN: Yes.
MARRIOTT: Well, I don't really want to put deadlines on things. I think the night before is a pretty thick deadline.
LIN: All right, she has until Tuesday, maybe.
MARRIOTT: Yes.
LIN: Thanks so much, Evan. You have a great night, whatever your plans.
MARRIOTT: Thank you.
LIN: And maybe we can all learn something from your experience.
MARRIOTT: Yes. Thank you so much, Carol.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
LIN: By the way, Evan's new "Fake a Date" game show premieres in March.
