Outrage Over A Man In A Wheelchair Shot And Killed By Police, But Does The Cell Phone Video Tell The Entire Story?; Donald Trump, What Does His Behavior Say About Him And What Does Our Session With The Billionaire Say About Us?
Aired September 30, 2015 - 21:00 ET
THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
[21:00:14] DR. DREW PINSKY, HLN HOST: Tonight, a black man. He is paralyzed from the waist down. He is in a wheelchair, and he is shot, ten
times by police officers. Plus, Donald Trump, what does his behavior say about him and what does our obsession with the billionaire say about us?
It all starts right now with the "Top of the Feed." Outrage over a man in a wheelchair shot and killed by police, but does the cell phone
video tell the entire story? Take a look at this.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE CALLER: Yes. We need police. We need an ambulance, as a man just shot himself -- in an Auto Zone parking lot. He
shot his self.
UNIDENTIFIED 911 MALE OPERATOR: He shot himself?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE CALLER: He was sitting and shot himself and he is falling out in the wheel chair and he is laying here on the ground.
UNIDENTIFIED 911 MALE OPERATOR: OK, lady.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE CALLER: Please send an ambulance and the police. Please
(END VIDEO CLIP)
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE OFFICER (1): Hands up.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE OFFICER (2): Hands up.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE OFFICER (3): Hands up.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE OFFICER: (3): Put your hands up.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE OFFICER (1): Put your hands up.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE OFFICERS: Hands up. Put your hands up.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE BYSTANDER: Oh, he is bleeding. He is bleeding.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE OFFICER: Hands up!
UNIDENTIFIED MALE SPEAKER: Grab his hands.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE OFFICER: Put your hands up.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE BYSTANDER (1): He shot him.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE BYSTANDER (2): Man, put your hands up.
(GUNSHOTS)
(END VIDEO CLIP)
BOBBY CUMMINGS, WILMINGTON POLICE CHIEF: I assure you that not one of those officers intended to take anyone`s life that day and we are, again,
sorry to the family that this encounter ended with the loss of their loved one.
PHYLLIS MCDOLE, JEREMY MCDOLE`S MOTHER WHO WAS SHOT DEAD BY THE POLICE OFFICERS: This is unjust.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: Joining me, AnneElise Goetz, Attorney, Host of your "Life and the Law podcast; Vanessa Barnett, HipHollywood.com; Mike Catherwood, my
KABC radio co-host; Segun Oduolowu, Entertainment Journalist and John Cardillo, WJNO Radio Host, former NYPD Officer.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
Are you -- are those tears I am seeing? Are you reacting? Have we gone to a new level with this? I mean I saw that video. I just did not
know what to do.
VANESSA BARNETT, SOCIAL COMMENTATOR: I am in shock. It is hard to understand. I know sometimes we do not get the full story. I know there
is questions about whether he is reaching in his pocket.
But, from that video -- from clearly just going by that video, it almost takes my breath away because I still cannot understand why such
aggressive force for a situation that did not look like --
PINSKY: For a man in a wheelchair.
BARNETT: -- it needed that at all.
PINSKY: We have been through this a few times where people were supposed to show some restraint, Segun. I mean --
BARNETT: Are not there other options? Are not there other ways.
SEGUN ODUOLOWU, ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALIST: My thoughts are not as jumbled, Vanessa. I got three coherent ones. Number one, the guy that
they paraded up there, who said that the cops did not intend to kill him, that was ten shots to a man in a wheelchair, so I do not buy a word that he
was saying.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
That is thought number one. Thought number two, the ugly scary truth is, if there is another side, we as the public do not believe because day
after day, we get a story about cops killing people. And, you cannot tell if he was, in fact reaching for a gun and you do not trust the police.
PINSKY: He was reaching for a gun. What is he going to do with that?
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
ODUOLOWU: Right.
PINSKY: The guy is moving in slow motion. Let me add in a little fuel to this fire. Police in Virginia are defending the officer`s use of a
taser, and this man suspected of stealing sunglasses. Take a look at this one.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY (voice-over): All right, witnesses recorded the officer tasing the man while his hands were on the car. Police say the video does not
show the officer`s viewpoint or the knife that was in the suspect`s pocket.
But AnneElise -- yes, I get it. I get it. We are not -- I want to support police, but it is just image after image like that and we have
these conversations in here every day. What the heck?
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ANNEELISE GOETZ, ATTORNEY AND HOST OF YOUR "LIFE AND THE LAW PODCAST: What is unique about these is that both of the victims actually did have
weapons. And, so, I think that we will hear from the cops that it is going to be a part of the program, that they had a legitimate fear. This person
has a knife. This person has a gun.
And, so when you are looking at what is excessive force use, you are looking at, did this officer act reasonably? And, when you are comparing
the whole, I think that knowing -- there is a 911 call coming in saying that he is armed. He has a gun. They are saying, "Put your hands up. Put
your hands up." And, he does not put his hands up --
PINSKY: 911 call was that he shot himself. That is what the call was --
(CROSSTALK)
GOETZ: Right, and he has a gun. He has a gun.
BARNETT: He is in a wheelchair. He is in wheelchair
PINSKY: Let me go to the audience -- hang on. Audience. Yes, ma`am?
SEGMET CHUBAKA, AUDIENCE MEMBER: Yes. I am Segmet Chubaka. And, I can tell you what is going on with this. This is the food. The food is
contaminated. The food have people with mental illness.
People is not thinking right. And, I am telling you that you guys need to pay attention to the food supply. If you want to stop solving
crimes, if you eat unhealthy, you have an unhealthy mind. You have an unhealthy gut --
PINSKY: All right. I am with you -- I am with you on your healthy mind --
CHUBAKA: If this is -- I mean we are dealing with extreme mental illness here. We are dealing with cops with --
PINSKY: Well, who is the --
CHUBAKA: I mean cops are killing their own wives today.
PINSKY: I hear you. Who is mentally ill, the guy in the wheelchair or the cops? --
CHUBAKA: Both of them. The cops and the guy in the mentally-ill wheelchair.
PINSKY: Everybody is out of control -- All right. All right.
CHUBAKA: I mean he needs to think the food supply.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
BARNETT: Food did not kill that man.
CHUBAKA: I am not blaming the cops. I am not blaming the cops. I am not blaming the cops, because somebody is to blame for giving people
contaminated food.
[21:05:01] PINSKY: All right. John -- John Cardillo --
CHUBAKA: We need to think about that.
PINSKY: John Cardillo, help me with this. I want to support the cops, but I see image after image that is so disturbing. It is really
hard. You know? Do you understand that?
JOHN CARDILLO, FORMER NYPD OFFICER AND WJNO RADIO HOST: I understand what you see, but AnneElisee nailed it. Let me correct something. They
did recover a weapon from the man in the wheelchair, a 30-inch special revolver. And, let explain something.
A 30-inch special round leaves the barrel at 850 feet per second, whether you are in a wheelchair or not. That gun is just as lethal. He
was hoisting himself up. His arms and hands worked fine. Now, as for the taser incident, we had a police officer killed today in South Carolina,
shot dead responding to a shoplifting.
This was a case of suspicious -- I am sorry, the taser was a shoplifting. That officer killed today was responding to a suspicious
person in a mall. One less than -- So, I think that tasing was absolutely appropriate.
PINSKY: All right. Let me show you one more. Mike, this one got you very upset. Can we have the footage from the San Francisco homeless man
that was taken down by police? It will just give you a sense of how divisive this topic is.
MIKE CATHERWOOD, DR. DREW`S KABC RADIO CO-HOST: Right.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY (voice-over): You remember this.
CATHERWOOD (voice-over): I do. Yes, absolutely.
PINSKY (voice-over): You got very upset. All right, this is a video of a San Francisco homeless man being forcibly pinned to the groun. He was
threatening people with sticks. He was walking into oncoming traffic. The video sparked a significant debate in this room when one of my guests
likened the police response to lynching and white supremacy.
CATHERWOOD (voice-over): The woman who actually took this video.
PINSKY (voice-over): That is right. She is actually the woman who taken the video. Take a look.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
CATHERWOOD: I think it is pretty gross to call this tantamount to white supremacy.
PINSKY: Yes.
HO: Right.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
CATHERWOOD: It really is. Do you not see the brown thin guy in stripes in blue?
CHAEDRIA LABOUVIER, THE WOMAN WHO RECORDED TE INCIDENT: Look. Do you not -- Do you not see the history of that?
CATHERWOOD: All right. OK.
LABOUVIER: Do you not see that?
CATHERWOOD: Because that is why --
(CROSSTALK)
LABOUVIER: Do you not see the history of that.
CATHERWOOD: That applies to one criminal.
LABOUVIER: You cannot say that.
CATHERWOOD: You are right. No.
MANIGAULT: Mike. That is not what she is saying. There is a conflict --
(CROSSTALK)
CATHERWOOD: I can easily dismiss what she is saying.
MANIGAULT: No, you cannot.
CATHERWOOD: I have been around white supremacists. They do not look like that. They have nothing to do --
(CROSSTALK)
LABOUVIER: You think that is what supremacist is --
CATHERWOOD: That is a debatable treatment of a guy, who is mentally ill and a criminal. And --
(CROSSTALK)
LABOUYVIER: I think that you need to go down to the history books before you make that statement. That is a continuum of lynching that we are
seeing.
(CROSSTALK)
CATHERWOOD: Yes, you are right. That is a compelling argument. You are right.
(CROSSTALK)
LABOUVIER: I think in a very --
CATHERWOOD: Because -- and until the 1800s, he went to a psychiatric hospital. He is not hanging from a goddamn tree in Georgia.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: But, Mike, that is where robber hits the road. I mean this is the debate, right?
CATHERWOOD: I do not really think so.
PINSKY: No, no. But --
CATHERWOOD: I mean that looked like a really farcical argument. So, it is just --
PINSKY: But, Mike, it is what is going on in this country. Maybe it is farcical, but it is where the divide is.
CATHERWOOD: Yes. I mean -- listen, there is always going to be an underlying feeling of discrimination by a myriad of groups in this country.
That is the unfortunate down side to having a place that we call a melting pot.
And, sometimes it behaves like a melting pot and sometimes it behaves like a salad. And, when you have everyone in the world now with a high
definition camera in their pocket, we are going to be forced to have these debates in a much more aggressive fashion.
PINSKY: Yes, ma`am?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Yes. Well, I can get lengthy on this subject, but --
PINSKY: Please do not. We only got about 30 seconds and I got to be out.
(LAUGHING)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: I am kind of wondering to kind of add light to another --
CATHERWOOD: Well said.
(LAUGHING)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: The Supreme Court has changed the finance campaign reform and people are pumping money into the sheriffs`
elections. So I --
PINSKY: So, you think it is --
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: They are elected, but they are not supposed to be democratic or republican.
PINSKY: But you are saying they are succumb into special interests like so many things in our country?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Yes. Well, I think --
PINSKY: OK. Hang on. Hold it.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: -- the republicans are going to be pumping money into the sheriffs` office.
PINSKY: All right, Segun.
ODUOLOWU: Well, I have a question for Mike. Mike, there is a large segment of black population, many population, where those group of cops do
resemble a lynching squad. And, when they are tackling down a defenseless homeless man --
PINSKY: Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait --
GOETZ: He was not defenseless.
(CROSSTALK)
PINSKY: Hey! Hey! Before he goes off, you are connecting the dots in a very disturbing history, right?
ODUOLOWU: Well, no.
PINSKY: Hang on. Hang on.
ODUOLOWU: I am just saying the appearance. I am saying the appearance of it.
PINSKY: The appearance to you.
ODUOLOWU: Not just to me.
PINSKY: OK. The one could make the connect the dots, right?
ODUOLOWU: Well, I would say this. To the gentleman coming to us via Skype, who said they recovered weapons, in South Carolina we saw video
evidence of a cop planting a weapon on a guy. So, what I am saying is when you are looking at the appearance, it depends on which vantage point you
are looking at.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
PINSKY: And, I am saying that we have to acknowledge that history you are bringing up.
ODUOLOWU: Absolutely.
PINSKY: That is where all the heavy feelings are coming from.
ODUOLOWU: Yes, sir.
PINSKY: If we do not talk about that piece, but talk about it civilly, is what I am asking for, not the way -- Mike felt incensed by that
connecting those dots because it did not make sense in that case.
CATHERWOOD: Right. Right.
ODUOLOWU: Five on one. Five on one.
PINSKY: It did not make sense in that case.
ODUOLOWU: Five on one.
BARNETT: When you heard supremacy, it really took you over the edge. It took you to a whole different place in that instance, but you do know
that we do not know what the KKK looks like without their hood. They could be wearing those police uniforms. They could be the judges. They could be
our doctors and our nurses, so you really just do not know it --
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
[21:10:13] PINSKY: Got to hold it right there. We will keep this going. Later on, Donald Trump just spoke at a campaign event. Hear how he
is offending now. Back after this.

(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
JOHN MCWHORTER, COLUMNIST, "BLACK LIVES MATTER IS LIVING IN THE PAST": Because there is this idea that the black community is biggest problem is
the one white cop, and that is a real problem. But the one white cop is a bigger problem than the fact that the black guy, who was killed by the cop
was in much, much more danger of being killed by another black guy from somewhere in the neighborhood.
If we are talking about what a ails the black community, racism is one thing. There is racism involved in what happens between black men and the
cops. I have said that. I am not against "Black Lives Matter" at all.
But, there is another huge problem, which is black people killing each other, but we have got this whole punditocrasy that are teaching us that it
is a bad thing to even talk about black on black crime.
[21:15:08] Why would we only be focusing on the murder by the occasional white cop? It is because of the sense that racism is the main
thing, because we are stuck in the notion that to continue the struggle of 1965, we have to focus on what white people are doing wrong.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: That was columnist John McWhoter, who says Black Lives Matter movement is stuck in the past. I am back AnneElise, Vanessa, Mike, Segun
and John. McWhorter says Black Lives Matter will not win over America until they address black on black crime. Do you agree?
GOETZ: No. Not at all.
PINSKY: OK. Segun, do you agree?
ODUOLOWU: I disagree with everything that man just said.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
PINSKY: OK. Anybody agrees? Vanessa?
BARNETT: Oh, yes. I disagree.
PINSKY: Do you agree?
CATHERWOOD: I disagree.
PINSKY: Disagree. John Cardillo, any agreement there?
GOETZ: Of course.
CARDILLO: I agree 100 percent and I will tell you why. I am going to use the FBI`s unified crime reporting, the definitive statistic. There is
no other statistics, there is no parallel universe data. Despite blacks being one-sixth the population of whites; on average, black men murder 700
more people per year than white men.
If you break it down by race, the black man is seven times more likely to commit murder than a white man. And, 90 percent of their victims are
other black men. It is an epidemic and that gentleman was 100 percent correct.
PINSKY: Now, he --
(CROSSTALK)
BARNETT: Why cannot we have a white on white crime.
GOETZ: We can talk about crime, right? We can talk about crime in America. That is a problem. But what we are talking about is our officers
and we hold our officers to a different standard than gang members, you know. Give me a break. You cannot say that -- they are not the same.
They are not the same.
CATHERWOOD: I also think that both arguments are mutually exclusive. I mean, is black on black crime a problem?
PINSKY: Right.
CATHERWOOD: Of course, and we should all be concerned about that because it is a segment of America, but the Black Lives Matter Movement --
PINSKY: White on white crimes are problem too.
BARNETT: Right. Exactly.
(CROSSTALK)
CATHERWOOD: The nuclear threat from North Korea is a problem. I do not understand why we have to introduce that.
BARNETT: Black on black is a raid of titles, so that the left can give it a title and say that there is this big problem that is not -- There
is no black on black crime. There is crime amongst all different races and they use the term when it is convenient. Nobody wants to go and help these
communities they are talking about.
What has the Republican Party done to solve this problem? We are all Americans and we all care so much. What have you done to go in and help
this so-called epidemic that you are trumping up these numbers about? You do not care until you can use it against a community of people that are
trying to do something better.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
PINSKY: Segun.
ODUOLOWU: Yes. Listen, I take my -- I applaud what Vanessa said, and just to piggyback off that, the numbers he quoted, two-thirds of the black
people that have been shot by the cops have been unarmed. So, by those same numbers, then I should say there is police on black crime.
(CROSSTALK)
CATHERWOOD: The question whether or not, you know, the Black Lives Matter Movement is relevant in the face of the statistics that have given
is really -- it is not a point that, you know -- the reason why Black Lives Matter has value above the idea of all lives matter is because, you know,
to say all lives matter is to make the claim that black people and -- black lives are treated the same way and that is probably not true. It is not
true in this country.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
PINSKY: But, I am going to say -- I am going to say it is also if you ignore what you and I were talking about up here a few minutes ago before
the break, there is a history, which has a lot of affect, a lot of feeling attached to it. We must acknowledge. Yes, ma`am.
ODUOLOWU: Yes, we do.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Hi. I just wanted to say real quick. My father is a retired cop and P.D. In situations like that, as
far as being shot ten times, if it is my partner who is laid down their life for me time after time, of course, I am going to want to ensure their
security.
Now, as far as the homeless man being wrestled down to the ground, you are dealing with elements of PCP. You are dealing with stuff that is
making these people super human. You know what I mean.
PINSKY: Yes. I know. I know.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: The guy with the one leg?
PINSKY: No, but listen -- but listen --
(CROSSTALK)
ODUOLOWU: Or the guy --
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Yes. People break their own arms and still keep going.
PINSKY: But, he is the guy who is psychotic. They were following a policy, but it bothers us to see this. It is tough to see. And, my
question on that when we did -- was why not the way we do it in a psychiatric hospital, which we do not use restraints.
CATHERWOOD: Well, in a psychiatric hospital, someone does not have a gun. I mean he was an armed man, and it still looks terrible --
GOETZ: No, the guy in San Francisco.
CATHERWOOD: Oh, the guy in San Francisco.
PINSKY: Yes, the guys in --
CATHERWOOD: Yes, but back to the idea of the guy in a wheelchair. Visually, it is terrible looking, but let us remember I mean let us change
it slightly. If he was standing up but had a gun, we would not be having this argument.
PINSKY: Another interesting is the visual because we are seeing the cameras.
CATHERWOOD: Right.
PINSKY: It is so disturbing to us? Yes, ma`am.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Things need to be addressed because a lot of people are very angry.
PINSKY: Yes.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Address to anger.
PINSKY: OK.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Resolve the problem.
PINSKY: Where is the anger coming from?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: The anger is coming from a lot of people in a lot of situations they do not understand that they can get
out of, because it is all they have ever seen since they have grown up. All cops are bad. Everything is not about racism. But, some people feel
like that because they need to be treated a lot better than what they are getting.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
[21:20:03] PINSKY: I think. I think that statement makes a lot of sense. So, if that is where we focus our energy, if that is the problem,
what kinds of solutions to we look at?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Therapy.
(LAUGHING)
PINSKY: I agree with that, but how do we enforce that?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Someone they can relate to that can volunteer to go into the neighborhood and be a part of a support group.
PINSKY: OK. Is there -- Let me ask -- Give me an honest answer to this. Does the African-American community a little resistant to mental
health services?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: No.
PINSKY: Segun --
ODUOLOWU: No.
PINSKY: Historically, there has been --
ODUOLOWU: No.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: I am a spiritual life coach and I am called upon off. I help many people.
PINSKY: Good. Listen. We need an army of you. But, the reason I ask that question is because, historically, the African-American community
has not been well served by psychiatry or mental health community --
BARNETT: I mean there is the axis is not there. The information is not there.
PINSKY: Well, that is a lot of return -- You go to the faith community as oppose to the medical community because of that history and I
understand that. But, I am glad to hear this --
ODUOLOWU: But, it is what we have been exposed to. I think -- I agree with a little of bit of what she said, but the reason that I come on
your show, Dr. Drew, and I sometimes paint the cops with a very wide brush is those police officers are paid to protect and serve.
So, if you know the bad officers, then report them if you know they have a problem. But, if the police officers want us as a community to look
them differently, then make that first step and come into your communities. Bring your liaisons and let us meet with your leaders.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
PINSKY: Let me just say this -- You are on to something there in terms of coming to our community. Let us get it very quickly. Yes, ma`am?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Hi. So, basically, I think the media sometimes like to spread a lot of craziness.
PINSKY: OK. OK.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Where what it is doing by showing these things about the cops with the black men and everything, that
it is like -- it is not good that that is occurring, right? It stirs up things about what happened in the past, in the 60s, right?
PINSKY: Yes.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: There is a lot of good that is now happening, you know. Not a lot of craziness back in the 60s. Things
are improving.
PINSKY: Yes.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: If you look at the good people.
PINSKY: Yes.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: But, of course, I disagree with that happening, of course, you know?
PINSKY: So, the answer is -- I am going to give one. I am going to give an answer. It is very simple. Segun was tilting towards it, which is
-- what we try to do here every night is say together. We need to be Americans first. We need to be humans that appreciate each other, solve
problems together.
There is anger. There is all these things, we are having to watch and talk and look at now that we did not have to deal with before because of
technology. And, it is in front of us now and we must deal with it, but we must deal with it together. There is something, a sort of management 101,
where you do not let people split.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
You know, when a bully beats a victim, you do not call the victim in and go, that bully is a bad guy. You get both kids in the room. We all
got to be in the room together. That is why I appreciate you, guys, all being willing to talk here. We are trying to -- I said it yesterday, if we
do not hang together, we will certainly hang apart.
Donald Trump is back. He had it again, tonight and on the attack. We will talk about that after this.

TRUMP: You can see there was blood coming out of her eyes -- blood coming out of her, wherever.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE SPEAKER: We have a problem in this country called, Muslims. We know our current president is one.
TRUMP: Right.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE SPEAKER: We know he is not even an American.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE REPORTER: All the magazines on your desk --
TRUMP: Well, I have a lot of covers.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE REPORTER: -- are covers of you.
TRUMP: You know, look, I am on a lot of covers. I think maybe more than almost any super model.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: Donald Trump, he is often criticized for his politically incorrect indiscretions, but he may be trying to show us softer side. This
week he is on the cover of "People" magazine with himself, his wife, his son.
Back with Mike. Yes, joining us, Ryan Sorba, Head of the Young Conservatives of California. And, Mike, you know, we are not a political
show here, per se, right? But,we are interested in what motivates and moves people.
CATHERWOOD: Sure.
PINSKY: And, when it comes to Donald Trump, he is a fascinating study.
CATHERWOOD: Definitely.
PINSKY: Our response to him, in my opinion, is even more fascinating study.
CATHERWOOD: Right. And, I think he represents a lot of how media is consumed overall. Whether it is political or not, in that he makes a loud
noise. Donald Trump is irrefutably a media -- a Godzilla when it comes to -- We talked about, you know, #AskTrump.
And, you know, from an outsider`s point of view, it did not work out very well for Mr. Trump. But, the fact that he was the number one trending
thing on Twitter in the world in 15 seconds, there is no one at this appointment that can come close.
PINSKY: Vanessa, why? You look a little disgusted. My question, though, would be is this a modern version of politics? Is this politics in
evolution and we are just not used to it?
BARNETT: No. And, I think we keep labeling, and saying, "Oh, he is refreshing or this is bar speaking." We are giving all these --
PINSKY: Bar speak? That is a new one.
(LAUGHING)
BARNETT: These fancy little terms --
PINSKY: What is that?
BARNETT: I mean, you know -- But, in reality, if you look at those clips, he sounds like someone`s drunk uncle at thanksgiving and that is not
who you want running this country.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
PINSKY: -- we did have a little Michael rapport in talking about fantasy football.
CATHERWOOD: Yes. You know, Vanessa, brings up a very good point. And, I am not by any means a harsh critic of Mr. Trump. I am quite
indifferent. I think he is very good at his job. I do not know if that job is going to be president of the United States. But, a lot of people
like to say that, you know, he is someone that I would love to have a beer with or he seems like someone I could hang out with.
I do not really want to hang out with the president. Like I would not want to hang out with Winston Churchill. He would probably be a dick, but
he makes a great -- you know, I would not want to hang out -- my point being is that like -- my overweight friends that like, you know, surf for a
living, I want to hang out with them. I do not want them running the country.
PINSKY: Let us break down a little further. Let us look at what Trump said to "People" magazine. Take a look at this.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
[21:30:02] TRUMP: I never like to say sorry because that means there is a mistake. But probably the last time I said sorry was a long time ago.
The last time I cried was when I was a baby. The last time I experienced true bliss was when I saw my poll numbers last week.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
(LAUGHING)
PINSKY: And just a few hours ago, Trump said the following at a campaign rally. He is telling a story about Rubio and Bush. Take a look
at this.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
TRUMP: And, they asked Bush, "What do you think of Rubio?" Rubio comes out and he is talking about Bush and, you know. "What do you think
of Rubio?" "He is my dear friend. He is so wonderful. I love him so much."
So, they ask Rubio, "What do you think of Bush?" "Oh, he is my dear friend. Wonderful. Just wonderful." They hate each other. They hate.
Trust me, I know. They hate so much. They hate more than anybody in this room hates their neighbor. But it is political (EXPLETIVE WORD).
(END VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: Well, political B.S., Ryan, I do not know. But, my question is why does not he emphasize more his independence from special interests?
We had somebody in the last segment worrying about special interests and sheriffs. His money keeps him out of the special interest -- or out of his
pockets if special interests are not there. Why does not he talk about that?
RYAN SORBA, HEAD OF THE YOUNG CONSERVATIVE OF THE CALIFORNIA: Because Donald Trump is a self-made man. People understand that Donald Trump is an
aggressive businessman --
PINSKY: No.
SORBA: And, that Donald Trump is going to be aggressive for the United States of America. Listen, we had a $40 billion trade deficit with
China last -- this year and Donald Trump is going to close that gap.
That $40 billion trade deficit in one month is bad for the United States of America. And, if people want jobs and they want somebody to
understands and knows the economy, they want Donald Trump.
PINSKY: All right. A businessman. Yes, sir. Go ahead.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Hey, Dr. Drew.
PINSKY: Hey.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: So, Ryan, I hear you talking about he is going to fix our deficit.
PINSKY: He is going win.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: He is going to win.
(LAUGHING)
I do not -- I have not yet heard how he is specifically going to do that. You mentioned a couple of weeks ago, we will read his book, I am not
putting any money in Donald Trump`s pocket. That is the reason we have the debates, so we can hear him articulate what his views are and the ways in
which he is going to be responsive to the needs of the country.
PINSKY: We heard a tax plan, right?
SORBA: Right.
PINSKY: You have not --
(CROSSTALK)
CATHERWOOD: Let us point out very clearly. I mean everything Ryan said might be very true except for the part Donald Trump is not a self-made
map.
BARNETT: No.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
CATHERWOOD: Donald Trump inherited tens of millions of dollars when he is 14 or 15. You know, I mean he has done very well for himself. I am
very proud --
PINSKY: It is easy to take pot shots at him, but I am interested in the people that really want to support him because they always surprise me
on why they are supporting him and who is supporting him. It is always a surprise. Yes?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Dr. Drew --
PINSKY: Are you Trumphite or a Trumpeter?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: You know -- Trump has just won me over, and I am going to tell you why. Because he is the best of the worst
candidates.
PINSKY: OK. But even, so he won you over back of his confidence or because of his tax plan or -- for what?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: You know, I really think he is not a great public speaker at all. He is really ebonically --
PINSKY: Challenged.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: You know, he is hood. He is straight hood.
PINSKY: That was appealing?
ODUOLOWU: Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: But, however --
ODUOLOWU: Whoa, Whoa, whoa, whoa!
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: However, out of all the candidates --
BARNETT: It is no way.
ODUOLOWU: Wait a second. Wait a second.
PINSKY: All right.
ODUOLOWU: Wait a second.
PINSKY: Segun.
ODUOLOWU: Wait a second. Wait a second. Like do not say he is straight hood and ebonically and be black. Do not do that. Do not --
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: No --
ODUOLOWU: No, no. Wait a second. Wait a second. You just said he won you over by not being able to speak properly. Like that is his --
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Because he is the best of the worst of the candidates.
ODUOLOWU: That is like saying I want to go to the dumbest school.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: I do not agree with you.
(CROSSTALK)
ODUOLOWU: I know I am not --
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: As a black man like me --
PINSKY: All right. Segun, leave it, leave it.
ODUOLPWU: I cannot -- I am not going to sit there and listen to a black man like say he is ebonically this or that, like that is cool.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: So, does ebonics mean black to you, sir?
ODUOLOWU: When you said he is straight hood and it is a black man saying it, what does it mean to you?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Well, my point is, young man is that --
ODUOLOWU: Do not son me. What does it mean to you?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: No. I said young man.
ODUOLOWU: What does it mean to you?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: What it means to me is that I have to vote regardless. And, if I am looking at all of the candidates and
Trump --
BARNETT: They forgot the republican candidates.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: And Trump is standing out on top out of the worst of all of them --
PINSKY: All right. Let us leave it be.
ODUOLOWU: And, that is makes him the best possible to you.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: I have to vote.
PINSKY: Segun, let us leave it --
ODUOLOWU: There is a Democratic Party.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: I have to make a choice.
ODUOLOWU: There is a liberty in party. There are other parties to vote for. That is the worst -- that is the worst generalization I have
ever heard.
(CROSSTALK)
PINSKY: You sit in my seat. You sit in my seat.
ODUOLOWU: I cannot believe --
PINSKY: You seat in my seat.
ODUOLOWU: I cannot believe what is he saying.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
PINSKY: I will stand. Here, I suppose. Is this about right for you guys? All right. There we go. Everybody, be cool. I am going to keep
this going. No, no. We will keep this going. I like it. Are you good?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: I am always good.
PINSKY: OK. Good. All right. Later, we have shoppers behaving badly.
(LAUGHING)
[21:35:00] How do I do that segue way? There it is. That is what you are going to see later, but we are going to keep Segun`s topic going
when we get back.
(MUSIC PLAYING)
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
TRUMP: We are led by very, very stupid people. Stupid people.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
TRUMP: Our leaders are stupid. Our politicians are stupid.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
TRUMP: I have a lot of friends in China. They think our representatives, they think our politicians are the dumbest men on earth.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
TRUMP: We have such stupid leadership. How stupid are they? We do not tax because we have people that are stupid. We are being led by stupid
people. We are being led by people that do not have a clue they are incompetent.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
TRUMP: How stupid are our leaders? How stupid are these politicians?
(END VIDEO CLIP)
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
TRUMP: Honestly, I think we are led by stupid people.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: Donald Trump, not afraid to tell people what he really thinks of politicians and, really, everybody. But, he recently tried to soften
his image, it seems. Back with AnneElise, Vanessa, Mike, Segun, and Ryan. He is softening, but Ryan, every time he says something awful, he goes up
in the polls.
[21:40:12] SORBA: That is right.
PINSKY: I understand you are going to defend him, but does it say something about us?
SORBA: Yes. It means that we are attracted to drama as individual human beings and the media --
PINSKY: Whoa, whoa, whoa! That is the least political thing you have ever said. So, we are attracted to drama, and then why do we translate
drama to this is a great leader, I want to get behind him?
SORBA: Because it is a matter of hearing about him the most. It is the matter of the fact that he is the one who is out there. Listen, Donald
Trump is running a multiple campaigns right now. He is running a campaign to individuals with particulars as the audience member asked on his website
and through his book.
And, if you really want to know what Donald Trump wants, you will read his in his website, but he is also sending messages by way of the media to
people by way of drama and by way of controversial statements.
PINSKY: OK. OK. So, Ryan is saying he is doing a reality show and he is getting eyes that way and through there giving his message and
getting his -- together.
BARNETT: I like a drama-filled show just like a nice person, but as much as I love Cookie Lion, I do not need her running the country like you
do not pick these people to run your country.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
My fundamental problem with Donald Trump, and I will be very honest. You can vote for whoever you want to, but as a black woman, the way he
speaks about women and the simple fact that he has been sued for racial discrimination and would not rent to black people and was withholding
information from black people, I have a fundamental problem with that and he will not get my vote.
PINSKY: Yes, ma`am.
ODUOLOWU: Vanessa --
PINSKY: Hang on.
ODUOLOWU: -- do you speak that for the brother behind me --
PINSKY: Segun.
ODUOLOWU: -- who did not hear that, because he was the best of the worst.
BARNETT: You cannot get an apartment from Trump.
(LAUGHING)
PINSKY: Here we go. Yes, ma`am.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: I think it is blood curdling terrifying that people are actually getting behind this overinflated game
show host/reality guy as if he is going to go around passing out retirement checks, homes, condos, jobs. He is not promising you any of those things.
I do not understand what it is that people are appealing --
PINSKY: I think --
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: This is not just the excitement and the rhetoric they are just giving you. You will be stuck with him for
the next four years. And, everything involving your life is going to be about this man, who cannot even have an intelligent conversation about
people without an insult coming out. I do not know what you, guys are appealing about that, unless it is --
PINSKY: I got you. I hear you. But, I think -- So, his appeal waxes and wanes. It is interesting. I hear from people that surprise me. Let
me, in fact, show you some of the supporters what we have been hearing in this show. Take a look at this.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: I believe Donald Trump is going to make America great again.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING AND APPLAUDING)
(END VIDEO CLIP)
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Please tell me a candidate that has outlined his policy more so than Donald Trump.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Let us vote like America`s Got Talent and at the end he can say, "You are fired" after we put people up
for elimination.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: The media claimed, "Oh, people are not being murdered in the U.S." He started parading those families in
front of the media and they shut up.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: When people think about Trump supporters -- I am not sure they think about you.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Yes.
PINSKY: What is he tapping into? Help me understand this.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: She said anger, ultimately, is what she said. And, I think the other thing is fear about jobs and their workforce and their family.
He is talking -- he talks about winning even though people want to believe that. They want to believe in whipping. They want to believe that the
economy is going to get better. They can find jobs and to get -- make better incomes.
GOETZ: But, he is not saying how he is going to do it, right?
PINSKY: Well, the tax code. We have a tax policy now.
GOETZ: But, a lot of -- even the right has said your tax policy is not going to work. We will probably end up farther in deficit. So, his
own people are not getting behind the tax policy. What he is really doing is he is putting on a parade and it is fun for us to watch, but his numbers
are going down.
His time is up. And, then the primaries will come about. We will actually have a real candidate. And, Ryan, I know that you like, again,
the bandwagon of Trump. But, the fact of the matter is, I know that in a few months when he is done, you are going to be talking about the next
republican candidate.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
PINSKY: And, AnneElise, and if he is not done, I will play this tape for you, do not you worry. I will bring it back. I will sit you here and
play this tape. Segun.
ODUOLOWU: Well, I was going to say, Dr. Drew, as physician, you know, anger and fear are powerful motivation --
PINSKY: Yes.
ODUOLOWU: But, they are not healthy ones. There is nothing about what he is doing that is healthy for America. When you are scapegoating
races of people and --
PINSKY: But scapegoating --
ODUOLOWU: -- and saying building a wall and blaming people.
PINSKY: Yes, ma`am, very quickly. You have 30 seconds.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: So, I am personally not from this country and I think this is just insane, even the situation that is
happening. But, if I am not from here and he is kicking out a whole bunch of other races, is he going to kick me out?
Probably not because I am a white woman. He is only going to use his laws against the rapist he wants out of here. And, I am have Canada. We
call our country -- we call it a mosaic. We have a mosaic of other people. It is a melting pot.
PINSKY: Did you see the South Park Canadians coming in?
(LAUGHING)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE AUDIENCE MEMBER: I did. Our mouths do not do that kind of thing.
PINSKY: I know that.
(LAUGHING)
CATHERWOOD: And, to be fair, Donald Trump, would not kick you out because you could be his next wife.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING AND APPLAUDING)
PINSKY: Yes, but your point is well taken. Your point is well taken. I just think it is intriguing that this candidate has emerged. I think he
is changed the political landscape. It is intriguing to me that we are all engaged in the political conversations so early. I cannot remember a time
ever when so early before a primary we are thinking about and debating politics.
It is -- it feels like a new era is upon us. You know, looking back, it is easy to look at the old fashion way things were done. But, there
were a lot of new things that happened that people were outraged and scared of at the turn of the century, in the 1815s, in the 1820s. I think
something new is upon us, whether he is the guy or not, we get to figure that out, guys. And, guess what? We all got to figure that out.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
Coming up, a fight in a super market. Guess where?
CATHERWOOD: Walmart.
PINSKY: Florida. Florida.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
(MUSIC PLAYING)
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
[21:50:02] PINSKY: Time for a "Click Fix," where the guests tell me what is trending on their Twitter or Facebook or Instagram feeds. And,
AnneElise is first.
GOETZ: OK. Dr. Drew, this set of photos has gone viral. It is a wedding photographer that captured the moment, a father of the bride
walking who is walking his daughter down the aisle stopped dead in his tracks, so he could grab another man.
And, that man was the bride`s stepdad. The three walked together and, of course, there was not a dry eye in the house. When asked why the dad
did what he did, he said, and I quote, "He has helped me raise my daughter and he should be walking with us," end quote. It is a beautiful thing.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
BARNETT: That is fascinating.
GOETZ: It is hard. It is a hard thing in this country to have blended families and that is how you do it. That is a perfect example of
how you do it.
PINSKY: Vanessa.
BARNETT: That was amazing. Whew. It shook me up. Jesus. Our favorite Kentucky girl, Kim Davis, is back in the news. In case you have
not heard, she is the county clerk whose refusal to issue same-sex marriage licenses landed her in jail. Some people hate her. Some people loves her.
And, apparently, the pope is a big fan, too. He reportedly met with her and even asked her to pray for him.
PINSKY: This is crazy. He called her to D.C. to the Vatican ambassador building -- whatever it is. What do you call it? --
BARNETT: Right. And, they --
PINSKY: What do you call -- Vatican --
BARNETT: Embassy?
PINSKY: Embassy. Embassy.
BARNETT: They hung out. He gave her like rosary beads.
CATHERWOOD: He thought he was calling Gina Davis. He thought, "What is this? What is going on here?"
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING)
PINSKY: Listen, he focused on conscious objection.
CATHERWOOD: Yes.
PINSKY: He is so smart the way he has languaged it. He did not say you are doing the right thing. He did not say defend the marriage.
BARNETT: Right.
PINSKY: He said conscience objection is a right. So, if you feel you need to object consciously --
BARNETT: Go ahead.
PINSKY: Let us say, you are a Nazi Germany and you need to -- you better do that.
BARNETT: Right.
PINSKY: That is an important thing. He avoided the whole thing altogether, it seemed to me. But boy, calling her into the Pope`s office -
-
(CROSSTALK)
BARNETT: It was like, "Oh, are you siding with her?" Just the appearance of it, it is kind of questionable, but I love this pope.
GOETZ: You have to be siding.
PINSKY: I think -- people -- the LGBT community is a little P.O.`d about all this.
CATHERWOOD: And, both Kim Davis and the Pope wore flowing open robes for some reason. Have you noticed that?
(LAUGHING)
All right. "The Daily Beast" reads, "Is it now slut-oween for 7-year- old?" Really? It talks about a mother of a 3-year-old girl who objects to the sexy costumes being sold at party city. Here is what we found in the
store`s website, girls` cop costume.
It comes with footless tights and handcuffs. And, then there is the precious zebra. Who does not love that? The precious leopard is described
with the term meowza, and the perfect ballerina cat has a lace up bodice.
BARNETT: Bodice.
PINSKY: Bodice.
CATHERWOOD: Bodice. What is that?
PINSKY: I could not think --
GOETZ: The corset.
CATHERWOOD: Why do not they call it a corset?
BARNETT: Because a corset you pull it tight. A bodice is just there.
CATHERWOOD: That is nonsense. All right.
PINSKY: I could not think of embassy --
CATHERWOOD: Yes. The mom implored the store to, quote, "Let kids be kids without imposing on them and to create abusive generals." No one put
a gun to her head and said you have to buy this costume, right?
BARNETT: At party city, no less.
GOETZ: But it is like -- you know, the same thing for women our age, right? You go in and it is all sexualized Halloween costumes.
PINSKY: Why?
GOETZ: Every single --
PINSKY: Why?
GOETZ: I do not know. No, no --
BARNETT: Halloween is the one day that you can be a slut and not be called a slut.
GOETZ: And you are called --
BARNETT: But, not my 2-year-old. My 2-year-old would not be in a slutty outfit --
GOETZ: That is what I am saying. It is start to go young. Come on.
PINSKY: Have you seen that documentary of pretty girls or something.
BARNETT: No. I have not seen it.
PINSKY: It is about how confused young females are in this country, because the images they get. It is bad enough to be in there. We got to
take a break. We are back after this.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
[21:58:10] PINSKY: It is time now for my "Click Fix." It is another in-store brawl caught on cell phone video, this time at a public super
market. Are you ready?
CATHERWOOD: Yes. Yes.
PINSKY: In Florida.
CATHERWOOD: Oh!
PINSKY: Take a look at this.
(LAUGHING)
(VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: So the young man who shot the video says it started at the Deli -- Like it customarily does, when a, quote, "Rude" customer used a
racial slur as he placed his order for chicken wings. The fellow Deli employee told the 59-year-old man to back off.
And, that is when a customer exploded -- the customer exploded, the guy in question here. More people, including employees and customers
jumped in. The man was arrested for simple battery. Publics -- the supermarket, as are we, is relieved that no one got hurt. It is really
something. You know, normally, we are watching Walmart. And, this is not a Walmart but, of course, it is Florida.
BARNETT: This is like the Walmart of America. Yes.
PINSKY: Adam and I used to have a game we played on the radio called Germany or Florida? If something macabre and terrible is happening, we
just go, "OK, hold on." We will figure out based on the evidence, "Is this Germany or Florida?" And, I think we would have gotten this one right.
Pretty much infuriating kind of behavior going around here.
(LAUGHING)
CATHERWOOD: Yes. People are not fist fighting at a Deli in Germany.
PINSKY: We just love it. We are just poking at you, guys. And, reminder, we are on SnapChat. You can join us there, DrDrewHLN. Please
DVR this program. Then you can watch us any time. You guys did a great job, tonight. Thank you for all this. Segun is not here. I think he ran
out.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
CATHERWOOD: It is his birthday.
PINSKY: Segun`s birthday.
CATHERWOOD: It is Segun`s birthday.
[22:00:00] PINSKY: Happy birthday, Segun. That is why he was misbehaving.
CATHERWOOD: He went to go get his bodice.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING)
PINSKY: See you next time.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)
[22:00:00] (MUSIC PLAYING)
END
