Dr. Drew
Final Show: Looking Back at Five Years of Shows. Aired 7-8p ET
Aired September 22, 2016 - 19:00 ET
THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
[19:00:00] DREW PINSKY, HLN HOST: Well, this will be our final show. We`ll be taking a look back at more than five years of good times with some of
our favorite people, many of them are here with me to share some of their memories. But first, we`re going to talk about a story in the news, Brad
and Angelina, they were Hollywood`s most famous A-list couple. Now that "A" might stand for allegations and abuse and affair. Take a look.
(START VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Is it still weird to you to hear "wife?"
BRAD PITT, ACTOR: It means something. It`s not just a piece of paper.
ANGELINA JOLIE, ACTRESS: We have our challenges but we -- but we`re fighting to -- to make it great.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We`re going to begin with new developments in Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie`s divorce.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We`re seeing Angelina come out, gun blazing.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Stunning allegations report that Brad Pitt is being investigated by authorities in Los Angeles for child abuse.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: There have been reports that divorce filing was triggered by an affair between Pitt and French actress Marion Cotillard.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Hollywood is buzzing with speculation that the onscreen pairing played apart in the offscreen split.
NANCY GRACE, NANCY GRACE SHOW HOST: She`s been with him all these years. There had to be something that made her say, you know what? I`m getting a
divorce.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: Joining me, Sam Schacher, host of Pop Trigger on Hulu; Mark Eiglarsh, attorney, SpeakToMark.com; Judy Ho, clinical psychologist,
professor of Pepperdine University. All right, Sam, let`s start with this abuse allegation.
SAM SCHACHER, HOST OF POP TRIGGER ON HULU: Abuse allegation. You remember, Dr. Drew, just the other day, we were speculating, right? We were all
speculating that something big must have happened to set off this chain of events, right? Thursday, last Thursday, they separated. Friday, she met
with her attorney. Monday was when the divorce was finally filed. So, we now know according to "People" magazine that something did happen.
Something, quote unquote, a family incident occurred Wednesday, the day before that they separated, and this occurred on the family`s private jet.
We know that reportedly, it was the flight from France to Los Angeles. We don`t know what happened, but it was enough to prompt the Los Angeles
authorities to meet with Brad about an incident involving one of his children.
Now, I have to say, CNN did reach out to Los Angeles Department of Children Services. They said they could not speak on the case, but they did not deny
looking into the abuse allegations. Also CNN reached out to the LAPD. They said they`re not handling an investigation involving Brad Pitt, but they
also did not deny that they were looking into it.
PINSKY: Mark, you buying those -- that one event?
MARK EIGLARSH, ATTORNEY: I don`t think he did anything.
SCHACHER: Really?
EIGLARSH: Okay, first of all.
PINSKY: She got up in the morning and said.
EIGLARSH: They probably argued. That`s what happens when people get divorced. But listen, LAPD said no child abuse investigation, number one.
PINSKY: All right, so far.
EIGLARSH: Number two, Brad Pitt is no rookie. He`s got a team of lawyers around him, and if he came to someone of my caliber, I would tell him.
PINSKY: What if he came to somebody above your caliber?
(LAUGHTER)
EIGLARSH: Then he`d be well suited, I assure you. But even I, someone of my caliber would have told him, you don`t go in and speak to law enforcement
unless you`ve done absolutely nothing wrong and even if you have, maybe a little bit, you don`t go in. So he went in, he freely and voluntarily spoke
to them, and they said nothing doing here.
PINSKY: So, it`s something else. Judy, any hint what it might be?
JUDY HO, CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST: Well, there could be a few different things. We know that there is news that he is being investigated. But, you
know what? Honestly, that happens all the time. If there is enough suspicion, they will open an investigation. And unfortunately, Dr. Drew,
sometimes in divorce, people actually raise that flag to pave the way for their legal battle.
PINSKY: I think.
SCHACHER: That`s horrifying to hear that. I understand, but again, you`re a psychologist, you`re a lawyer, but to hear that people so casually, so
commonly use their children in a divorce.
PINSKY: Oh, yeah.
HO: They`re a tool, Sam.
EIGLARSH: Hold on one second. You`ve got the court of public opinion, they`re both the biggest A-list stars, and so people are taking sides,
right?
PINSKY: Someone with knowledge of the abuse allegations says, quote, Brad is taking this very seriously, he is cooperating. So there you go, Mark. He
is open and willing. But, listen, I saw this coming in 2010.
I did an article in the Huffington Post where I said, you know, these people have long history of -- I`m sure they`re fine people, I don`t want
to disparage them as humans, but as their ability to sustain a relationship, past history determines future history, and they both had
real trouble. She was a cutter, she was a drug user.
SCHACHER: Can`t she recover from that, Dr. Drew?
PINSKY: Yeah, but intensive long-term treatment, and then if I -- Judy, correct me if I`m wrong, if you were treating Angelina Jolie, it would be
intensive, long-term, multiple modalities, and then you would hope that she`d get involved with some boring guy whose name we don`t know. That
maybe, maybe that would work.
HO: Right. Because that is sort of the -- that is really sort of the only solution for people who have this type of history is to really even
themselves out with somebody who`s extremely stable and can actually accompany them on this long road to recovery.
PINSKY: Quietly. Simple. Quiet.
EIGLARSH: That`s deep stuff. I have something very simple. My wife and I, we spoke about this. How would you feel, I asked my wife, if I were to go
on a movie set for a few months, right? Where then I`m sucking face with some high-end celebrity, right? Whose smoking on, but it`s just acting, I`m
bringing home the bacon, honey, that`s all.
[19:05:00] PINSKY: But, Sam, what about the affair allegation?
SCHACHER: Okay, the affair allegation, we know that when the divorce first broke, there were many reports saying that Brad Pitt -- Angelina Jolie
believed that Brad Pitt was having an affair with Marion Cotillard, his co- start in upcoming movie, Allied.
Now, a lot of people didn`t even know who she is. She`s a brilliant actress, so to remind our viewers, she`s 40 years old. Fantastic actress
but she also has a long-time partner. They have a son together. It`s French actor and director, Guillaume Canet, and she remained very -- you like
that? Did I have a good accent? I tried.
I had it -- I had it written phonetically. But here`s what she posted on Instagram and I think it`s important because A, I think that she`s been
collateral damage in this because she`s remained silent up until now and this is what she wrote on Instagram, quote, this is going to be my first
and only reaction to the whirlwind news that I was swept up into.
I am not used to commenting on things like this, nor taking them seriously, but as the situation is spiraling and affecting people I love, I have to
speak up. Many years ago I met the man of my life, father of our son and the baby we are expecting. He is my love, my best friend, and the only one
that I need.
So then everyone was reacting that she`s pregnant, she had to clarify, it`s not Brad`s baby. Brad is not the father. And then she did say, in
summation, she did say that she hopes that Brad and Angelina find peace. Leave her alone.
PINSKY: Social media is not interested in the truth. Go ahead, Mark.
EIGLARSH: The part of her statement, there`s more to it, the one line. I love this one line.
SCHACHER: You cut and pasted it?
EIGLARSH: This part, this one line I did while I was at lunch with my cousin. I cut and pasted. It said, for those who feel the need to gossip in
the media and the public, I wish you a speedy recovery. I love that line.
PINSKY: All right. More coming and as we move along here, we will take a look back at our five years at HLN. We are saying farewell tonight, but
we`re not saying farewell without showing you a lot of the highlights that we think of so fondly and we are so proud of. So, I`ll be back after this.
[19:10:00] (COMMERCIAL BREAK)
(START VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Angelina and Brad are breaking off.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Even Brad`s buddy, George Clooney was surprised.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: On Angelina and your friend, Brad.
GEORGE CLOONEY, ACTOR: Oh, what happened?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: They are divorcing.
CLOONEY: I didn`t know that.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She filed.
CLOONEY: I feel very sorry. That`s a sad story.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: But not everyone was sad. Fans of Brad`s ex-wife, Jennifer Aniston, created hush tag justice for Jen. There were gifts of her
smiling, gifts of her smirking.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is just ridiculous.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It says a whole lot, her laughing.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yeah.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: After two years of marriage and 12 years together, Brad and Angelina have split. Many fans of Brad`s first wife, Jennifer Aniston, say
they feel vindicated. I`m back with Sam, Mark, and Judy. Sam, I bet you that Jennifer Aniston is far less gloaty and self-satisfied than these
people are.
SCHACHER: Absolutely. I mean, first of all, she`s married now. To quite the catch.
PINSKY: She actually cared about Brad and she.
SCHACHER: It`s been 12 years.
PINSKY: I`m sure doesn`t wish them ill.
SCHACHER: Exactly.
PINSKY: And George Clooney made it very clear. He was right on it. There are eight lives being affected by this. This is a very sad story.
SCHACHER: Absolutely. And she`s so close with, I believe, Brad Pitt`s mother, so there is a lot of history there. It`s really, really odd,
watching the reaction on social media.
We either saw -- and we talked about this the other day -- we either saw people celebrating, pointing at Angelina Jolie, saying this is karma for
what you did to Jen, or we saw people in full blown, like, devastation and mourning, thinking like this couple, this example of love broke up and that
somehow means that you`ll never find love.
PINSKY: There`s no hope for anybody.
SCHACHER: It`s weird.
PINSKY: This was a fantasy to begin with. And we sort of thought that two people that couldn`t find any better than the other, that means a perfect
match, but, Judy, that means nothing.
HO: It means nothing. And this is part of the problem. I think as to your point of social media, people are trying to put the narrative on for
themselves, based on their experiences, and what they think other people should be feeling. Let`s really focus on the main issue here. What are we
going to do about this family?
Like you said, Dr. Drew, we have six kids that we have.
PINSKY: Six or seven.
HO: There`s several. Six kids that they have to monitor. Think about that. Their lives are so impacted. Children of divorce, they do have that risk of
short-term and long-term problems if you don`t get to them right away and if they`re going to be focusing on all of this right now, how can they
focus?
PINSKY: What`s the matter, Mark?
EIGLARSH: Well, what`s troubling me is I`m thinking about my own kids. These are human -- these are human beings.
PINSKY: By the way, these are at-risk kids. They were adopted.
EIGLARSH: I get it, they are fair game, these are A-list celebrities, high profile, but before the court of public opinion starts to say their stuff,
just think about each one of these 23 children, you know, who will look on social media and read things and want to know, hey, dad, did you do this?
Did you do that? It`s just sad for me.
SCHACHER: It`s not a fair game because they didn`t choose to be in the public eye, their parents did. So, it`s sad.
PINSKY: "People" magazine we`re told by sources that over the past few years, Angelina had been looking for a new life because she was quote,
troubled and almost depressed. Again, she was a cutter, she had chaotic relationships, she had poly substance abuse.
SCHACHER: Dr. Drew.
PINSKY: That`s not somebody whose almost depressed. It`s something that gonna get the press.
HO: But the history. This is somebody who is under stressors. These old patterns are going to come back.
SCHACHER: Do they always come back? I find it unfair to say that if someone experienced these behaviors when they were in their teen years or
experimentation, whatever it was, that they somehow are going to resort back to that later on. I don`t think that`s a fair statement to make.
HO: Well, it`s not a fair statement except for the fact that most people do have these patterns that they have to manage, so what therapy actually
helps you with these longstanding personality patterns is that when they come up, you know how to manage it, you know how to deal with it in a more
productive way. And so I`m not really sure if she`s learned that or not because we don`t know about her treatment.
PINSKY: It seems like they`re sort of glossing over it with more kids and being perfect and being of service which is great, but it`s not a way to
deal with this long-term problems with relationships.
[19:15:00] EIGLARSH: The only thing I know for sure is we have no idea what goes on in their house. We don`t know.
PINSKY: There were some -- again, we don`t know, but there are allegations, again, to "People" magazine, there was a lot of chaos, the kids weren`t
going to school and there were lots of people having to care -- I would imagine they`d have mental health professionals in there, wouldn`t they? I
mean, I would hope.
HO: I would hope so but that`s the other issue, too, Dr. Drew, is the fact that there`s so many different people that they were attaching to and the
children are confused.
And so now that they`re going to be a split family, how are they going to deal with the fact that each of them now will have to really kind of manage
the entire clan by themselves in these separate moments. How will the children adjust to that and that`s one of my biggest worries is the
attachment.
PINSKY: I know. I`m with you. Again, kids were adopted, come from traumatic backgrounds, different ages, who knows how that`s going to impact on all
these. "People" magazine also reports that days before Angelina filed for the divorce, she talked to Brad, offered to have them file together. Brad
reportedly quote, begged her to press pause, so they can try to reconcile and maybe prepare the children.
SCHACHER: I think it`s pretty telling that she is filing and you`ll probably say you know what, Sam, that`s common, but the fact that she`s
filing for sole physical custody, to me, speaks volumes, because she`s worried about the children and their safety.
PINSKY: As -- no. I`m not sure. No, no, no.
EIGLARSH: Objection. Objection. Love you but part company.
SCHACHER: How evil of a person do you have to be to use your children against their own father or their own mother?
EIGLARSH: No, physical custody doesn`t necessarily mean she`s not going to share custody. She`s just saying, I`m going to be the.
SCHACHER: That`s a pretty powerful statement to make.
EIGLARSH: That means something sinister.
PINSKY: When I -- when I wrote that article or did that, gave that article six years ago, I knew this would be a nuclear rupture when they started and
her first shot is aggressive. As Anneelise Goetz said yesterday, it is aggressive, it is gun blazing, and this is the beginning of a real battle
royal.
Family court system, you saw a divorce court, the family court system loves this. Every kid will have three psychologists and multiple attorneys. It`s
going to be a mess.
HO: Multiple attorneys. Each child will have their own attorney. They will have a state child welfare attorney. Each of the parents will have their
own attorney. It`s a total mess. I was on a case like that.
SCHACHER: They see dollar bills.
PINSKY: Mark is trying to figure out to defend the attorneys, right?
EIGLARSH: No, you know what I`m trying to figure out? I have time to ask the question and that is, if we can turn back the clock and you`re about to
get married, what would your advice to them have been?
PINSKY: My advice would be the same I said last setting which will be, hey, you guys have some histories here of difficult relationships, maybe you
each ought to go into individual therapy and really think about whether this is going to be the right relationship for you.
I would hope that over many years of work that they would look at the other and go, oh, yeah, that`s too much like me, too many problems, I need
somebody much more boring, much more stable, right? Judy, much more stable.
HO: Yes, yes. Right. I mean, when you say boring is actually probably stable and healthy for each of these individuals possibly. So this is what
we`re talking about. They need somebody who actually can emotionally regulate themselves in different ways and both of them seem to be really
kind of working towards -- yeah, intense, and like, let`s just get more projects, more productions, more kids, like let`s solve our problems that
way, and this is part of the issue here.
PINSKY: I saw it coming. I saw the trouble coming. I`m sure individually they`re great, but together, it looked bad to me. And a lot of money was
earned since they got married, 118 million dollars. Is that going to be another point of contention?
EIGLARSH: Oh, sure. When is it not?
PINSKY: I want to move on because this is our last show. One of the more than 1,000 shows we have done in this studio or various other locations
across more than five years. We have something special planned tonight. You`re seeing some of our highlights. You`ll see more and we are joined by
everybody that you know from this show. Back after this.
[19:20:00] (COMMERCIAL BREAK)
PINSKY: Tonight is our very last show here at HLN. We`ve had some amazing experiences and great moments, emotional moments, and ridiculous moments.
We are joined here in the studio by everyone, all of our contributors.
(APPLAUSE)
You`ll recognize every single face in this studio. They have been an integral and, I dare say, critical part of this show, and we appreciate
them so, so, so much. And thank you for being here. Burt Dubrow, our executive producer and myself are overwhelmed by your support tonight. So,
thank you. All right, we`re going to start with news. Breaking news that we`ve covered live on the show. Take a look at this.
(START VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The verdict is in. Casey Anthony found not guilty of murdering her 2-year-old daughter.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: First-degree murder, not guilty. Aggravated child abuse, not guilty. Aggravated manslaughter, not guilty.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: On August 9th, Michael Brown was shot and killed by police officer Darren Wilson.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The grand jury has decided no indictment of officer Darren Wilson. We`re all looking at this footage there live in Ferguson.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Just pinched his arm and I grabbed my gun and I aimed it at him, fired one shot.
PINSKY: We are hearing there is a verdict. Is that correct?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, we are getting word and we have a verdict, Dr. Drew.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We, the jury, find George Zimmerman not guilty.
PINSKY: Music icon, Prince, dead, age 57. We are live tonight for the next two hours talking to people who knew him best. Forget the name of the drug.
It doesn`t matter. You hear rumors, you brought up the issue of Percocet. I could care less. It means nothing to me. What means something to me is he
had pain, he was given pain medicine, and now he`s dead.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: Judy, got any highlights?
HO: Wow, there are so many. But I guess, you know, I remember so much of the conversation, even just recently when it came back, about the hot car
dad.
PINSKY: There was no Jodi Arias in there.
HO: I know.
PINSKY: Lots of Jodi Arias moments.
HO: That was when I say first.
PINSKY: That`s when I got to know most all three of you. And Mark had all kinds of.
[19:25:00] SCHACHER: Weird shenanigans.
EIGLARSH: I might have. I cant remember.
PINSKY: There was another report story. This was a year ago. The fog`s not going on here tonight, is it?
EIGHLARSH: No fog. Couldn`t get it on the plane.
PINSKY: This was a year ago in South Carolina, a Caucasian man walked into a black church during a bible study, was there with them for an extended
period of time and then just stood up and shot nine people. I`m going to show you what happened on our show that day.
(START VIDEO CLIP)
VANESSA BARNETT, JOURNALIST: If he was black, he`d be a thug. If he was Muslim, he`d be a terrorist, so he needs to be labeled a racist, hate
having person that is a terrorist in this country and then we can talk about a next step.
Right now, as we speak, I know my mother is possibly on her way to church for choir rehearsal but she takes my daughter to church with her. We go to
bible study and so this is, when we talk about so many different issues.
(CROSSTALK)
SPIRIT, PSYCHOTHERAPIST: But it`s not just the black community.
(CROSSTALK)
PINSKY: Hang on, Vanessa. Spirit, hold on.
SPIRIT: White people out there as well.
PINSKY: Hang on, Vanessa.
BARNETT: Exactly. All races go to church. All races go to church. But if we`re looking at this issue right now, he went in and said, I want to shoot
black people. And as a black person, I can have this moment and say that that is scary for the black community and that does not make me racist.
That`s not divisive. That`s me saying that right now in that moment, that`s what`s very real, and I`m not negating that white people and Indian people
and Asian people, everybody goes to church. I`m talking about this moment.
PINSKY: Yeah.
SPIRIT: Let me ask you this. Because Dr. King`s daughter said today, and I`m here in Atlanta, Dr. King`s daughter said that this tragedy reminded
her today of the very incident that happened when her grandmother, mind you, was shot in a church here in Atlanta so many years ago. As well as a
deacon. By not a white person. So, this is what I want us to understand. This is a painful tragedy, but the real issue here is that he could have
chosen anywhere. He was a coward. He knew exactly what he was doing.
There are a lot of copy cat elements here. There are a lot of mental health issues, but this could have happened anywhere. He chose a church because it
was an easy target. We have to start talking about, how do we protect ourselves as individuals and not wait for someone else to come and save us,
because it`s not going to happen.
PINSKY: In the United States of America, in 2015, my friend, Vanessa, has to be reduced to tears out of fear because her mother and little girl, how
old is she?
BARNETT: Two.
PINSKY: A 2-year-old are going to church. She`s reduced to tears out of fear because her -- the grandmother and the little 2-year-old are going to
church. What is wrong with us? What is wrong with us as a country? I can`t believe I`m having this conversation.
I can`t believe I live in a country where a bunch of first graders get shot up. I can`t believe I live in a country where a guy can walk around with
orange hair and say I`m the joker, oh, we can`t intrude on his rights, can`t put him in a hospital, we can`t keep him from getting a gun.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: And I`m still -- I can`t believe I`m a little numbed to those things that were so astonishing to me. Vanessa, you`re here tonight. Thank
you for joining us.
BARNETT: Thank you for having me.
PINSKY: You know, I look to you still for guidance and understanding and we`re still -- it`s still emotional, right?
BARNETT: Still emotional. I wish I could be numb. Like just watching that, I got emotional all over again, and because nothing has changed. And today,
my grandfather, he`s here with me today, he`s from Michigan, he`s here with me today. He`s a a minister and, you know, he`s my guy. He`s who I go to
for guidance, and he`s in the church all the time, every single day. We grew up in the church. We`re always there. That`s supposed to be our safe
haven.
And so when I watch that back and know that that was ripped away from us and I -- I`m so close to my grandfather and to think that he could have
been at a bible study and that -- it`s still to real. It`s still so raw and I told everyone, I`m not crying today, this is a happy, joyous farewell,
and I`m sitting here in tears again because look at the news. Nothing has changed.
PINSKY: All of you that have helped us grapple with these stories, there`s work to be done, right?
BARNETT: And I thank you for this platform, because all of us came together and although Spirit and I didn`t agree on that subject, I love Spirit, and
we can have that conversation and she can push me and I can think different and maybe I do the same for her, but just knowing that you`ve provided that
place, I think we`re all very grateful for that.
(APPLAUSE)
PINSKY: Thank you. Well, Spirit is here tonight. Areva is here tonight. And you guys have all helped me try to get my head around something that --
it`s a country that I barely recognize now.
SCHACHER: So powerful. That`s what I love about the show is the realness of it. And Judy, oftentimes after this incident, you`ve helped me. I was
wondering if you had anything that you wanted to add or any favorite moments or thoughts that you wanted to share with Drew.
HO: Absolutely. Well, Drew, I first learned about you when I was in high school, driving home with one of my dates, we listened to you on Love Line
and that was.
PINSKY: Are you intending to make me feel old? Is that your goal tonight?
[19:30:00] HO: Apparently I`m old too because this is almost 20 years ago.
PINSKY: That feels much better.
(LAUGHTER)
HO: And -- oh, my gosh. And you know, that`s when I first learned of your great work, and even in college, when I made that long drive from UC
Berkeley back home, up and down, you know, I always drove the night shift because that`s when you can get home in four hours and you were with me, I
listened to Love Line and I think it`s fair to say that you were there for me for some of my formative years before I even knew you.
And -- and sometimes after you meet your personal heroes, you`re disappointed. You think, oh, I thought they were built up in my head and
they`re these people. Well guess what? When I met you almost four years ago, when I first got that call to have the honor of joining you as a
guest, you`ve just shown me that you are this generous, kind, loving giving person, even more so off camera than you are on.
And you`ve really inspired me and you`ve really paved the way for people, giving them hope when they`re at their direst moments and really showing
us, people who are mentally ill are people. Their diseases. We can help them. There are things that you can do to better your life. And you`ve just
paved the way for so many of us who want to keep on doing your good work and I just thank you so much.
PINSKY: That`s good. You`ve been very, very important to this show. But I do want to say, John Cardillo is here. We have a dangerous driver on our
hands here. Four hours to Berkeley from Los Angeles. Will you please pick her up after the show. I don`t want her on the streets. Next up, thank you,
Judy, seriously. Five years of rare unexpected television moments, caught me off guard. We`ll go into those next.
[19:35:00] (COMMERCIAL BREAK)
(START VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: Let me ask you some questions. I know. Everybody always to talk to you. Is it difficult to be on T.V.? She`s sleeping.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That`s one of our malpositions as I call it. Our favorite, though, is I lean over his driver side fender over his hood and
kiss him along the crease in his hood and rub up against his fender at the same time. Other things include just sitting inside of him, making love
like with the steering wheel.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I know you`re upset.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh, no.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You put him in the fetal position. Just stay down there.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What the hell have I wandered into?
PINSKY: Well done. I`m glad you came. Thank you for joining. It`s like.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What the hell is going on?
PINSKY: It`s like a family dinner where people start arguing and throwing food.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Have people been drinking?
PINSKY: Okay. I`m taking my mike off. I`m walking out. I`m officially leaving the show. I`m being punked, that`s what happening. I am being
punked by my guests. Did you guys smoke crack before you got here?
Yes, you got to call her back, my dear. We got to do television. Who might you be speaking to?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I`m on T.V. I`ll -- all right. Bye.
PINSKY: Okay.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Turn it off.
PINSKY: Thank you. Thank you for your attention.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: That was some of the more bizarre, unexpected live television moments that caught even all of us off -- especially me a bit off guard,
left me speechless at times.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I love it.
PINSKY: You like that?
SCHACHER: Who picks up a phone during a live broadcast?
EIGLARSH: I`ve seen her recently. You couldn`t fix her?
PINSKY: No. Tan Mom, we learned, has a lot of head injuries and a lot of that is neurobiological.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yeah, that`s what explain that one.
PINSKY: Now, Mark, how do you explain this one. During the Jodi Arias trial, after she took the stand, but when asked specifically about the
murder details, she seemed foggy. Watch this.
(START VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It appears that your memory becomes faulty immediately upon your shooting him.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yeah, things get very foggy from there. When I sort of came out of the fog, I realized, oh crap, something bad had happened.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And then you got up and then the fog started to come in, right?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I`d say the fog started to come in after the gunshot.
PINSKY: Mark, the fog.
EIGLARSH: Yes, Drew.
PINSKY: What`s happening?
EIGLARSH: What are we talking about?
PINSKY: What have you done?
EIGLARSH: Well, Drew, I -- I`m just testing -- I`m testing her theory, and -- for the past ten minutes, I`ve been in a fog. And surprisingly, no, no,
I remember -- so far, I remember everything.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: Do you remember that moment? Do you remember how you thought of that? We didn`t know it was coming.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: That`s hilarious.
EIGLARSH: It`s a gift that I gave my son. I said, can I borrow it? I want to use it to test it out. Outrageous theory. Yeah.
PINSKY: Well.
SCHACHER: And didn`t your son sometimes come with you into those? Because those are like studios, that`s not actually here. But didn`t he come in
with you?
EIGLARSH: This has been a part of our family at home. It`s been amazing to bring my kids, and -- and they feel like they know you.
PINSKY: We would see them during the commercial breaks. Well, look at this little clip. This is when we invited, wisely or otherwise, Gilbert
Gottfried. Whose idea was that? Take a look at this.
(START VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: I follow Gilbert Gottfried on Twitter and he`s always talking about the women on my panel.
GILBERT GOTTFRIED, COMEDIAN: You surround yourself with these hot pieces of ass. And it`s like -- it`s kind of like you have a story someone was killed
in their home, and then you go, and now we`re going to talk to a bunch of girls that you`d pound like there`s no tomorrow.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I have no words. I`m ready for commercial.
GOTTFRIED: Dr. Drew is better than the playboy network.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: Joining me in the audience, Anahita Sedaghatfar, who is sitting on that panel. Do you remember that night?
ANAHITA SEDAGHATFAR, ATTORNEY: I do remember that night and I could not believe he said that. I was speechless, and that rarely ever happens to me.
And it was so funny because I woke up the next morning and my cell phone and e-mail was blowing up. There were reporters calling me. They wanted a
statement.
They wanted to know was that set up, was that planned, and I remember calling Burt, the executive producer, I don`t know, he`s in here somewhere,
and he was like, don`t say anything. No comment. This will be gone by tomorrow. But this video went viral. It was all over the internet and
social media.
[19:40:00] PINSKY: And then you were complaining something about not being able to -- somebody got proposed? You ended up getting a bunch of
proposals?
SEDAGHATFAR: That was -- yes, we talked about a story.
PINSKY: Wait, I`ve got a tape. I`ve got a tape. Here it is. Watch it.
(START VIDEO CLIP)
SEDAGHATFAR: We saw it with Scott Peterson, we saw it with the Menendez brothers. They literally have women that want to marry them. They`ve gotten
more marriage proposals than I`ve gotten, Dr. Drew. What is it about these women that they`re drawn to men?
PINSKY: Okay, so, I want you to know, we`re getting scores of marriage proposals for you. So, good news. Anahita, will you please marry me. You
look great tonight as usual. Please get your own show.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: You were angrier back then, Anahita.
SEDAGHATFAR: It didn`t work, Dr. Drew, because there`s no ring on my finger.
PINSKY: Let me check Twitter. Let`s see how many more come through. Scores then. Who knows what`s up tonight?
SEDAGHATFAR: Keep them coming.
PINSKY: All right. Sam, it`s your -- go ahead.
SCHACHER: I -- Mark, you know, we were talking in the break and you had a lot, you`re not one to mince words, you have a lot that you wanted to say
to Drew.
EIGLARSH: Well, first of all, personally, I love you like a brother.
PINSKY: Thank you.
EIGLARSH: I think you`re an extraordinary host, but even a better person, father, husband, and you`re the real deal. And I`ve been very blessed to be
a part of your show. So, thank you.
My fondest memory, they`ve asked me to share, clearly, during the high- profile trials, whether it be Zimmerman, Arias, Anthony, everybody would say, it`s time to learn the truth. The truth is going to come out. And I
would share with you that trials are not about the truth.
PINSKY: Yes.
EIGLARSH: And as you were trying to wrap your head around those issues, you would physically get nauseous.
PINSKY: Yes.
EIGLARSH: You`d get an upset stomach.
PINSKY: You made me angry with the truth doesn`t matter stuff.
EIGLARSH: And so I brought you an autographed, signed item.
PINSKY: Mark, turn it around so they can see the autograph.
EIGLARSH: Dear Drew, love you like a brother, Mark. So the next high profile trial, pull that out.
PINSKY: I will cherish this always. So happy to have this Pepto-Bismol from Mark Eiglarsh.
SCHACHER: Maybe we can sell it on E-bay. You never know.
EIGLARSH: Thank you to you and thank you to everybody here, everybody`s just wonderful. Feels like a family.
PINSKY: It is an amazing family we have here, right? We appreciate. Burt, thank you for assembling this group. I know he`s in there crying over
there. My family`s in the group here. My wife`s here, my son`s here. This is almost too much to see all you guys all at once. All right. We have some
raw emotional moments on the show that brought us, me too, to tears. Back after this.
[19:45:00] (COMMERCIAL BREAK)
(START VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: These are people`s lives out on the streets. That`s the thing that, it just goes on and on and on. What`s going on?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We lost our house. The water came so fast. The guy next door saved us. If he didn`t knock on my door, we`d all be dead.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: This is a -- a day like no other. We have moved into a different realm with what has happened today.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I don`t see how any people or person could be emotionally, just, wrecked over this. But, oh, my God, those poor babies.
That`s all you can think of.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I thought that if -- if I killed my kids and then killed myself that -- that there wouldn`t be anybody to hurt them. And I
thought that at least I would be merciful. If somebody had told me, you know, you`re going to go insane and you`re going to kill one of your kids,
I`d have told them they didn`t know what they were talking about.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: One of my best friends, I met him there at post.
PINSKY: At this club?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And his brother, also my friend, the one who died, I didn`t know he was there. I just found out this morning, and he saw me --
he did like a strong hug, and I didn`t know that was the last time.
PINSKY: I know I`m feeling what everybody else is feeling, like you need a strong hug. So let me be the.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
PINSKY: There have been a lot of emotional moments on the show. Some even brought all of us to tears. This was when Prince died. We gathered some of
the people who knew the singer in the studio. One of those was Van Jones. You know him from CNN. He covers politics there, but he knew Prince
personally, so we brought him on the show, and here`s what happened.
(START VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You worked directly with him. You were his lawyer, right?
VAN JONES, POLITICAL ACTIVIST, COMMENTATOR, AUTHOR, ATTORNEY: I was one of his lawyers, yeah. I -- yeah, you know, I think part of it is hard is that
people are talking about him from the 80s and he hated that. He really hated -- he didn`t hate the era. He loved the 80s, but he also, he had so
many things that he wanted to do next. There were so many things that he -- that he was trying to do now, and he cared so much just about ordinary
people.
When the Black Lives Matter people started protesting, he understood where they were coming from. He really did. He was a rebel when he was young as a
musical guy. And he said, look, let`s reach out to those kids. Let`s go to Baltimore. But he said, I want them to become an economic force. Use your
passion to be creative. He`s a Jehovah`s witness.
It`s so hard to talk about your friend in the past. But they`re not allowed to brag, "I gave this money, I gave that money, I gave him my word." He
hated that. He said listen, I get enough attention. Lift up these people who are hurting. He would send money. Nobody knew where the money was
coming from.
You got people watching right now who have programs, youth programs, basketball programs, that have money from him and they don`t know. I`m just
saying that when you think about how great he was as a musician, just please understand, that`s a part of the greatness. That greatness was there
all the time.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
[19:50:00] PINSKY: I thought he showed greatness that night, Van himself, exposing such a deep part of himself.
SCHACHER: I was sitting right next to him, and I remember crying just seeing the emotion, and I`m so -- it was hard for me to see him in that
light. Because I always saw Van Jones in a completely different light. But that`s a testament to you, Dr. Drew, we knew you do.
You have a way of inspiring people to just let their hair down so to speak and -- and be real. I mean, we saw the real moment with Vanessa. We`ve all
had real moments on this show. We`ve seen how you connect with the viewers, with the audience, with contributors and that`s a testament to you.
PINSKY: That`s very, very kind. One of our contributors we relied on forever, Loni Coombs, is here. Loni, who we used to call Colmes, and
prescription medication, the legalities around that, all the deaths of celebrities. You were there for much of that.
LONI COOMBS, NEWS ANCHOR, LEGAL COMMENTATOR: Yeah. I just want to say, you know, you`ve covered so many tragedies on this show. And the one thing that
you really showed me is most people want to go to the questions, why, give us answers. But you did, you would ask for people to give emotions, you
would force people to give emotions.
PINSKY: I hope I didn`t force them.
COOMBS: You would literally say, this is a safe place to bring out those emotions. As a hardened attorney sitting here on your stage, I changed from
that. I realized the value of sharing those emotions. I mean, we`re healing as a community, and you need to feel like, it`s normal to share those
feelings, we`re all sharing those feelings, and that`s the first step to heal.
Then you learn from the awareness and you take action after that. But you made it a safe place for everyone to say, you know what? We`re all feeling
this, we can all share it together.
PINSKY: Thank you. It`s the magic of human connectedness. I mean, that`s -- that`s what.
EIGLARSH: To you, it`s such an obvious concept. That`s why you get a lot of hate mail, because people don`t get it. They don`t get that judgment is the
thief or serenity. When we come on the show, everybody wants to pick up their pitchfork and you say, no, let`s analyze it, let`s figure it out. And
I`ve learned a lot from that.
PINSKY: And they turn their pitchfork on me.
EIGLARSH: Yeah.
SCHACHER: I -- I have to say, Dr. Drew, before we go, and I hate goodbyes, I`m already getting emotional. But.
PINSKY: It`s a safe place.
SCHACHER: I am in debt to you and the show. I am. It`s been such a platform for me and you built such a family. And to kind of piggy back on what you
said earlier, Mark, not only have I learned to be a better host from you, but I have learned to be a better person.
Because to the viewers out there who have never had the opportunity to meet Dr. Drew, he is the most empathetic, supportive, kind, humble person I`ve
ever met. It`s unbelievable, and I just want to say that thank you for inspiring me and I can`t wait to see who you inspire next.
PINSKY: Thank you, Sam.
(APPLAUSE)
PINSKY: All right. I`ve got to go. I got more to say to the audience after this.
[19:55:00] (COMMERCIAL BREAK)
PINSKY: Well, before we leave you tonight, I want to take a moment to express my deepest and sincere gratitude to everyone who made it possible
to bring you this show for the past five years. I want to thank my team, who we affectionately call the Dr. Drew crew. They are an incredibly
talented -- I would put them up against anyone who are producers, writers, editors, led by our executive producer, Burt Dubrow.
I cannot thank everyone enough for the genius, he assembled you guys, and I`ve always been so, so proud. Also, the production crew, I want to thank
guys here in the studio. You made it fun. What can we say? I mean, it`s the.
(APPLAUSE)
PINSKY: In Atlanta, here in Los Angeles, especially our director, Dave. And where`s Dave? Dave, are you out there? Dave, we could not have done this
without you. Of course our hair and makeup artist who made us look great every night and you heard me talk about Judy who we will miss. Oh, it`s
emotional. Thank you to all our contributors who we now consider family for bringing your insight, expertise to the show every night.
(APPLAUSE)
PINSKY: . allowed us to have this conversation. I will never forget you or forget the time we spent here together. I want to thank HLN and the network
leaders who supported the show especially Jeff Zucker, Ken Jautz, Keith Brown. Thank you to my wife, Susan, our kids, Douglas, Jordan, and Paulina
for your support through all this. Sam, you`re crying too much. I`m not going to make it through this.
Finally, I need to thank the viewers. You here joined us every night. We appreciate you. We thank you for joining us. My hope is that over the past
five years, this show has contributed to any of the stigma around mental illness. I hope you`ve learned a couple of things about healing and if
treatment works.
I hope you have been given some insights about how humans work and why people behave the way they do. I`ve got to wrap this up, I`m afraid, I hope
we made you laugh. If you go all the way to the end here for me so I can just can get to it, listen, I`m not leaving. I will be here at HLN. I will
become a regular contributor at CNN. Thank you for watching and good night.
(APPLAUSE)
