Politics of Race; Where is Kyron Horman?
Aired July 26, 2010 - 21:00 ET
THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
JOY BEHAR, HOST: Tonight, the White House is under fire over the Shirley Sherrod case and Howard Dean calls Fox News racist. You know, the last time there was this much debate about race, Michael Jackson was arguing with his dermatologist.
Then rumor has it Lindsay Lohan is making friends in jail. And I hear she gave one girl her Prada bag, and in return she got the right to live.
And a woman rented a 19-bathroom house in the Hamptons in the attempt to meet a man. How much you want to bet he leaves all 19 seats up? Huh? That and more right now.
Used to fly that thing to Baghdad.
The Shirley Sherrod controversy continues. Will she accept a new job with the Department of Agriculture? Were the administration`s apology sufficient? Are the Republicans afraid there will never be another white president?
You know what they say, once you go black -- with me now is Donna Brazile, Democratic strategist and CNN contributor; Ann Coulter, conservative commentator and my favorite sparring partner. Hi, Donna, how are you? It`s so nice to see you.
DONNA BRAZILE, DEMOCRATIC STRATEGIST: I`m doing well. And hello Ann.
ANN COULTER, CONSERVATIVE COMMENTATOR: Hello, Donna. I`m always asking for you.
BRAZILE: Thank you, Ann.
BEHAR: Isn`t that sweet how nicely you started out, the two of you.
COULTER: It`s true.
BRAZILE: Yes.
BEHAR: But Donna, you know, you were one of the first Sherrod defenders. Were you surprised that you were so alone in all of that?
BRAZILE: I was seeking the truth. And quite honestly, I had an opportunity to listen to the entire tape, took my time writing copious notes. Called my friend Mary Matalin, my colleague, my other sparring partner on CNN, and told her what I heard and I went public.
Look, this was very shameful. To run with a tape -- an edited tape without having all the information, to smear Mrs. Sherrod`s name. And at the scene, the Spooners and Ms. Sherrod appeared here on CNN.
People still had some doubts about her veracity. I`m glad that this episode is behind her. I hope she makes a good decision regarding her future. And I hope we can all learn from this.
Ann and I share a great deal in common. We both like to run our mouths and we both like to tell the truth. And I know because, based on Ann`s history of wanting to get to the truth, she would have done the same thing I did.
BEHAR: Oh, the Kumbaya moment, it`s too much for me right now.
Ann something`s wrong here. The woman is not a racist is considered a racist, I bet you blame this on the left. Do you?
COULTER: No and by the way, I did the same thing. I heard -- I was watching the news -- I heard on CNN, it was like at 7:30, whatever day it was last week that the NAACP has finally posted the full speech. And I instantly went to watch the speech.
Yes, what had been said about it, the excerpts that had run were not true. But I think the people to blame here are the White House for firing her, the NAACP -- they`re the only ones who had the full speech at that point. Then she was fired and they approved of the firing.
All Breitbart did was post the excerpts that were sent to him.
BEHAR: Really? What do you mean the excerpts sent to him by whom?
(CROSS TALKING)
COULTER: I just saw him say when it was first out -- by the way, this was when he didn`t know that the larger speech would say otherwise.
BEHAR: Breitbart didn`t know --
COULTER: No, because he didn`t have them. He said this is what was sent to me. This is what I put up. Fox News, by the way, never mentioned Shirley Sherrod`s name until she was fired by whom, the White House -- it`s the White House again jumping to conclusions.
BEHAR: What I understand is that Fox was about to expose the Breitbart thing because Glenn Beck was about to do it.
COULTER: Not according to Glenn Beck. They`re just terrified that Glenn Beck will run this. Why don`t you watch the tape first? It was outrageous what the White House did. It was very chicken.
BEHAR: Donna, tell me what you think about what she just said. Andrew Breitbart didn`t have all the information when he put it out there?
BRAZILE: He should have known better. The responsible thing to do when you get a tape in the mail or somebody hands it to you is to basically check the source, check the information. Andrew, if you`re listening and, Ann, if you know him, tell him to call me, I could tell you a bogus tape, especially when you`re given a speech before the NAACP or any organization like the NAACP.
I knew something immediately was wrong. But look, last Monday at 1:40 p.m. Foxnews.com, got a copy of it, they linked it to Andrew`s site, and then this became part of the road rage that we now have to figure out how to somehow or another unwind.
The truth is that everyone acted hastily. They did not listen to the entire tape before making their --
COULTER: That`s right.
BRAZILE: -- rushes to judgment. And it`s a shame. The White House has apologized, Secretary Vilsack has apologized.
BEHAR: Why wasn`t he been fired?
BRAZILE: It`s time that Andrew Breitbart apologized as well.
BEHAR: Really? He hasn`t apologized, Breitbart at all. And the other thing is Breitbart is now --
COULTER: I think he should, as you said.
BEHAR: Wait a minute -- Breitbart is being featured as an RNC fund- raiser? What is that? Is he like the GOP guy who does their dirty work or what?
COULTER: I have no idea about the fund-raiser but he`s a very amusing speaker. Look, he`s not even "60 Minutes" and "60 Minutes" literally doctors the tapes when they run them.
He`s a journalist. Of course he`s going to put them up. That excerpt was obviously arresting. He`s not the one who fired Shirley Sherrod. He`s not the one before whom she spoke and who had a copy of the tape, the NAACP said, good, she should be fired. Any journalist would put that up.
BEHAR: No. But don`t let him walk the hook. He put it out there without vetting it just like everybody else. And the media was also at fault.
COULTER: No, but he vetted everything that was sent to him. That`s what was sent to him. It wasn`t like they were piecing different parts together.
(CROSS TALKING)
COULTER: That was an arresting part of the speech. It`s only -- it`s like the surprise ending, only if you keep watching it do you find out that she`s walking it back.
BEHAR: Donna, shouldn`t these people know a little of the history of this country? Sherrod`s husband was in SNIC. I believe her father was lynched by the Klan.
(CROSS TALKING)
BRAZILE: He was murdered.
BEHAR: He was murdered. So these people in the media don`t remember any of that history, I guess, either. How old is Breitbart? He should have known some of this.
BRAZILE: I have to tell you, when Al Gore supposedly created the Internet, no one has used those tools that he`s given us to make sure that we can find the facts.
BEHAR: Another lie.
BRAZILE: You can simply Google. That`s right. You could have simply Googled Sherrod and know that Charles Sherrod was one of the co-finders of SNIC, that Shirley Sherrod was a hero in her own right in given her own background in saving family farms all throughout the (INAUDIBLE).
Willie Nelson could have told you about her history. There are so many people who knew. By the way, the congressman down in Albany, Georgia, John Lewis, the congressman from Georgia. My ex-boss, Eleanor Holmes Norton who was also a part of SNIC.
But, look, the fact is that they goofed up, they made a mistake, they apologized.
Where do we go from here? We need to figure out a way, Joy and Ann, to have a conversation about race without pointing fingers and being accusatory.
I know Ann Coulter, when people hear I`m on with Ann Coulter, they get nervous. Oh, you`re on with Ann. Yes, Ann is a diva, but I`m a diva, too.
BEHAR: Well, I`m not.
BRAZILE: You are a diva.
(CROSS TALKING)
BEHAR: Let`s listen to what DNC chairman Howard Dean said yesterday on Fox News.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
HOWARD DEAN, FORMER DNC CHAIRMAN: I think Fox News did something that was absolutely racist. They took -- they had an obligation to find out what was really in the clip. Look, the Tea Party called out their racist fringe and the Republican Party has to stop appealing to its racist fringe.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
BEHAR: Well, you know this Breitbart thing in a way is a perfect example of what Howard Dean, former DNC chairman, is talking about because the GOP is appealing to the racist fringe in order to get back in power. Am I wrong or right?
COULTER: You are wrong. And in fact, I think that is -- I mean you talk about is Breitbart not familiar with this one woman`s history? Well, the whole world is now. But the more recent history is -- consists of constant false accusations of racism against the Tea Party just like you made.
The claim that John Lewis was called the "N" word 15 times at an anti- Obama rally, that`s been proved as false as anything could be. And by the way, John Lewis never said that himself. I looked it up at the time because John Lewis -- I`m sorry he`s a liberal, but he is a genuine American hero.
I was shocked by that. He never said that himself. The black congressman who claimed he was spat on walked it back. There`s been a $100,000 reward, and this is as they`re voting on health care. There are thousands of cameras all over Capitol Hill. There`s a $100,000 reward if anyone can produce a videotape of John Lewis being called the "N" word one time and still that gets repeated on every network, in the "New York Times" --
BEHAR: But you have said in your column that there`s imaginary racism in this country. Were those pictures of the monkey, was that my imagination or did I see that or didn`t I?
COULTER: Well, for one thing as I`ve told you before on this show and as we know because liberals come out and say it, a lot of them are liberal plants.
BEHAR: Oh, boy --
COULTER: No, that`s an absolute fact. The one just shown on --
(CROSS TALKING)
BEHAR: Donna. Come on.
COULTER: As for the monkey one, I mean it`s either nothingness, it`s silliness comparing Obama to Lenin and Hitler. It`s overheated, it`s not racist.
And let`s go back to the Bush era, he was called not only a Nazi and Hitler all the time, he was called a monkey all the time. I`m not endorsing these signs, I think they`re stupid but don`t scream racism over every stupid sign or every liberal plant --
(CROSS TALKING)
BEHAR: Ok, Donna? Go ahead Donna.
BRAZILE: Let me just say that we are living in a very unique period of American history. We can use this time to begin to have a real cogent dialogue about things that we agree with and things that we disagree. There`s no reason why conservatives or liberals or whoever -- we can sit down and have a conversation about race, about sexism, about things that matter to American people, about jobs, health care, without using the race word or talk about racism. And we just have to be able to repudiate those who seek to inject race into the conversation and it`s not about racism.
BEHAR: Ok ladies. Sit tight. When we come back, the President takes his turn on the couch at "The View". I`ll ask Ann and Donna what they`d ask him.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
BEHAR: I`m back with Ann Coulter and Donna Brazile. President Obama will be on "The View" Thursday, the first time a sitting President visited a daytime talk show. I think Ronald Reagan might have done one, but he was napping.
COULTER: He liked his naps.
BEHAR: He liked his naps.
Now, Ann, let`s face it. You`ll never get an interview with Obama. So through me, you can channel through me. What would you like me to ask him?
COULTER: I got a lot for you. Why he lied about the health care bill not covering abortion, why he lied about the health care bill not covering illegal immigrants. Also totally serious again, I think he would like this question, what exactly on foreign policy does he think McCain would be doing differently and why was he ginning up those moveon.org lunatics during the campaign saying he was going to shut down Guantanamo and pull troops out of Iraq when he hasn`t do that.
And also I want to know when is he going to quit smoking? And how is it as the most powerful man in the universe, how does it feels to still be living with your mother-in-law?
BEHAR: Why do Republican women talk so fast? Can you explain that to me?
COULTER: Because we`re so used to being cut off.
BEHAR: Donna, let`s just stop there for a second.
What do you mean about the health care bill not covering abortion? How is it covering abortion?
COULTER: It`s now being openly admitted that it`s covering abortion.
BEHAR: Is that true, Donna?
BRAZILE: No, it`s not. There`s nothing in the statute that would allow this plan to cover abortions.
BEHAR: Ok. There you have it.
BRAZILE: Using federal money. Using federal money.
BEHAR: Using federal money.
It`s all about federal money. No federal funds shall be used.
COULTER: Right, but you go into an account that the state sets up and everything else is paid for with federal money.
BRAZILE: Even those states. If you look at some of the recent e- mails from Planned Parenthood and they`re out there upset that my private money -- because I`m self-employed -- will not be able to go into a separate fund because many of these states are opting out of that.
BEHAR: But do you really want all these liberal babies to be born?
COULTER: Yes, I do. And I would like them adopted into nice born- again families.
BRAZILE: You know, Ann there`s nothing wrong with --
BEHAR: That`s scary.
BRAZILE: -- liberals are just like conservatives, we want what`s best for America. That`s all we want.
BEHAR: Yes, that`s right. And nice clothes.
COULTER: Only you, Donna, the rest of the liberals, no.
BEHAR: All right. Donna, what should I ask President Obama?
BRAZILE: I want to talk about -- Joy, I would ask him about jobs because clearly the American people are concerned about the economy. They`re concerned about their own jobs. They`re concerned about the fates of their communities. I would really grill him about jobs, the stimulus plan.
Then, of course, I would like to know what are his plans for the future in terms of controlling the deficit? Will he allow the bush tax cuts to expire because we simply cannot afford them? Then I would go into Mr. President, what have you been reading lately that didn`t come from the CIA? And then I would ask what movie have you been able to watch by yourself alone that made you think differently about the work that you`re doing every day? I would get into those kind of questions.
BEHAR: Yes. They get into trouble a little bit when they come on "The View". McCain got into trouble when he was there with me. You might remember that.
COULTER: You`re a lot of trouble.
BEHAR: We`re a lot of trouble, a little bit. And he might be worried about it.
For example, when President Obama went on Leno, he made that faux pas about the Special Olympics. He was trying to be funny because he was on a comedy show.
COULTER: Right.
BEHAR: So should he be worried? Do you think he could say something that he`ll regret on "The View"?
COULTER: I don`t think so. He`s among friends. It would be tougher for a Republican to go on it.
BEHAR: But going on nontraditional shows, it helps these candidates. We`d probably be friendly to him.
BRAZILE: But he`ll be intimidated. I think he`s intimidated; he`s not always surrounded by women, Ann. He might be just a little intimidated.
BEHAR: He`s got two daughters a mother-in-law and a wife. What do you mean he`s not surrounded by women?
BRAZILE: That`s at night and that`s during the weekends, but I`m talking about on his day-to-day, he`s got a lot of guys around him.
COULTER: I think he does need to hold another major press conference with the press. I think he would be very good on "The View". I think that`s what`s appealing about him. It wasn`t when Americans were voting for him they want card check and national health care and cap and trade. He seems like a genial fellow and he`s very charming. I`ll admit that.
(CROSS TALKING)
BEHAR: I met him before. He`s quite charming.
COULTER: Of course, they were hood winked when it came to health care.
BRAZILE: Joy, let me ask Ann, since I have Ann. Say two nice things about President Obama. You know during President Bush`s term, I got a chance to work with him during Hurricane Katrina. Say two nice things about President Obama.
BEHAR: Squeeze it out Ann.
COULTER: I just did. I think he`s very charming and especially in settings like that he can be funny. And I`m so happy he brought the word retard back.
(CROSS TALKING)
BEHAR: You know what? So was Bush. What do you mean he brought the word retard back?
COULTER: The President of the United States said it, and then Rahm Emanuel. They brought it back.
BRAZILE: Well, first of all, on the day that we`re celebrating the anniversary of ADA, let`s not use that word. Let`s talk about Americans with Disabilities --
(CROSS TALKING)
COULTER: You talk to Rahm Emanuel about that.
BEHAR: Do you think they should get rid of Rahm Emanuel? Donna, do you think they should get rid of Rahm Emanuel because a lot of people are saying he`s a problem there?
BRAZILE: I hope that -- look, I`ve known Rahm for a long time. He`s a very tight-fisted, real strong gentleman, but I think the President has a lot more problems than just Rahm Emanuel.
BEHAR: Maybe they`re just too nice around him. You know, they`re obsequious around him and don`t want to upset him.
BRAZILE: I don`t know why. Rahm is not that -- he`s not that bad. I know some bad brothers. He`s not a bad brother. He`s feisty, but he`s not that bad. He`s no Shaft.
BEHAR: All right.
Now, let`s go to this other topic: property taxes, unemployment and crime are all major issues in New Jersey, but on ABC`s "This Week" that state`s governor was asked about something far more important, the cast of Jersey Shore.
Watch.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
GOV. CHRIS CHRISTIE (R), NEW JERSEY: What it does is it takes a bunch of New Yorkers who most of the people on Jersey Shore are New Yorkers. It takes a bunch of New Yorkers, drops them at the Jersey Shore and tries to make America feel like this is New Jersey. I can tell people, they want to know what New Jersey really is, I welcome them to come to New Jersey any time. The Jersey Shore is a beautiful place and some place that everybody should come on vacation this summer.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
BEHAR: Sure, send them to New York. Really, I`m insulted that the Jersey Shore people should be New Yorkers. It`s bad enough that Snooki is not really Italian. She`s Chilean passing as an Italian.
COULTER: You`re doing what poor Governor Christie was doing. I think this is one of the most magnificent clips of a politician ever. He is my candidate for president in 2012. This is just another reason I love him.
Politicians -- Donna will totally know what I`m talking about -- politicians are so careful about never, ever insulting anything, even these crap white trash shows celebrating white trash across America. One time Joe Biden said, something was Puritan, and then said, not to insult Puritans.
So I love that this guy comes out and attacks the Jersey Shore.
BEHAR: All right. I`ve run out of time.
Go ahead -- last word Donna.
BRAZILE: Ann, I had a chance to talk to the governor and I said are you running in 2012? He said, no way. So, I just wanted to let you know that.
BEHAR: He`s not running. Sorry. You can date him. He`s perfect for you.
COULTER: I don`t want to date him.
BRAZILE: He`s married. He`s married. I met his wife.
BEHAR: Oh, he`s married. Never mind.
BRAZILE: She`s a great woman. They met in college, University of Delaware.
BEHAR: Ok. Thanks both of you, very much.
We`ll be back in a minute.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
BEHAR: Seven-year-old Kyron Horman has been missing from his Portland, Oregon home since June 4th. After more than 3,300 tips from around the world, authorities are now circling around the last person to allegedly see the little boy, his stepmom.
To bring us up to speed with all this is Jane Velez-Mitchell, host of HLN`s "ISSUES with Jane Velez-Mitchell". Ok, what`s the latest on this story, Jane?
JANE VELEZ-MITCHELL, HLN HOST, "ISSUES": Well, cops are focusing like a laser beam on the three hours after little Kyron was last seen. The stepmother, Terri Horman, says she left the little boy at his school at 8:45 a.m. and he was walking toward his classroom, she waved good-bye, but he never made it into that classroom.
She pops up almost three hours later at the gym. What did she do during that three-hour period? Now, this is what she claims --
BEHAR: Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Let`s go back for a minute. So 8:45 the kid is walking into the school. Did anybody see him do that?
VELEZ-MITCHELL: They saw him at the school. He never made it into the classroom, the classroom where he was supposed to be that day.
BEHAR: So something happened between the time she dropped him off and he got into the building?
VELEZ-MITCHELL: He got to the building. The question is did he stay in the building? Did he leave?
BEHAR: So then she goes off and does what?
VELEZ-MITCHELL: She claims she went doing errands, supermarket shopping and -- this is weird -- she claims that she drove around in a truck for quite a while because her other daughter, her baby daughter, 20 months old, had an earache, and she thought that this motion would soothe the child. Now, cops have a lot of questions about that story.
BEHAR: Well, what do they think?
VELEZ-MITCHELL: They`re looking at the surveillance tape of the supermarkets and the roads that she claims to have driven to see if she was actually there. There have been some reports that say her cell phone pings don`t match up with her version of events. And cops have been searching repeatedly an island near the school. They sent divers down there. So there`s some speculation maybe the cell phone pings put her on that island.
BEHAR: So the cops want to know where she really was during that time.
VELEZ-MITCHELL: They do.
BEHAR: They don`t believe that she was there --
VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, there`s a lot of questions --
BEHAR: -- in the truck and all this other stuff?
VELEZ-MITCHELL: There`s a lot of questions about this mom for two main reasons. One, the missing boy`s dad says that cops told him that several months before this child disappeared, she allegedly tried to hire a landscaper to act as a hit man to kill her husband, Kyron`s dad, and allegedly offered him sexual favors to do so.
The other thing is, once the dad hears that, he takes off with the baby. Well, as the entire world is searching for little Kyron, the dad claims he heard from cops that Terri, the stepmom, was starting an affair with one of his high school buddies and sent this guy hundreds of text messages including sexually graphic images of herself. This is at the very time that everybody`s looking for little Kyron --
BEHAR: For the kid.
VELEZ-MITCHELL: -- who disappeared on her watch.
BEHAR: So besides the fact that she`s probably just screwing around or whatever it is she`s doing, that does not make her guilty of killing or kidnapping the kid. Just because she`s tried to have her husband killed doesn`t mean she would do that to the child, right?
VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, yes. That`s true.
BEHAR: I`m just being the devil`s advocate.
VELEZ-MITCHELL: I agree and she`s not named a suspect or person of interest. But there are reports she`s failed two polygraphs. Kyron`s dad says that he was there when she walked out of the second polygraph and was venting about it.
BEHAR: Do you think the child is alive, before we go?
VELEZ-MITCHELL: I pray that the child is alive.
BEHAR: Well, what do you think?
VELEZ-MITCHELL: Statistically with every hour that passes the chance of a child being found ok in this kind of situation -- but miracles do happen, let`s hope.
BEHAR: Ok. Thanks very much Jane.
VELEZ-MITCHELL: Thanks.
BEHAR: Be sure to watch HLN`s "ISSUES" every night at 7:00 p.m. for the latest on the search for Kyron.
I`ll have an update on Lindsay Lohan`s life on the inside when we come back.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
BEHAR: You know, Lindsay Lohan has spent her first weekend in jail where she`s only allowed two showers a week. I don`t think she likes that. On her nails she replaced f.u. with "wash me." To give me the latest on Lindsey`s life behind bars is Ken Baker, executive news editor E!. OK Ken, I have heard conflicting reports about Lindsay in jail particularly about whether she`s getting along with the other inmates. Is she or isn`t she making friends?
KEN BAKER, EXECUTIVE NEWS EDITOR, E!: Well we actually spoke to another inmate at the Lynwood Jail Facility, and they said she`s very segregated. And in fact, she doesn`t have any interaction with the other inmates whatsoever. The only interaction that they have is when she`s being moved to a medical facility or to a shower within the facility, or somewhere else within the facility they put the whole place on lockdown. So that`s the only impact she`s really having. She`s not making friends at all in that jail.
BEHAR: No.
BAKER: If anything, she`s a very isolated, lonely person. She`s in there 23 hours a day in this tiny cell. So there`s not a lot of friendships being made.
BEHAR: But she`ll be out before you say Lindsay Lohan. She`ll be out this week, won`t she, or next week? Right?
BAKER: Well she`s just -- well, she`s just completing her seventh day today. And it`s expected that she`ll be in there about 14 days. That will take her to about next Monday or so depending on the formulas that they use at the sheriff`s department.
BEHAR: OK.
BAKER: She`s only going to serve another week or so.
BEHAR: Right now someone told me the person who burglarized her house is in that jail. Did you hear that?
BAKER: Well, Alexis Niers, she`s a reality star who actually has a show on E! Called "PRETTY WILD." she did overlap with Lindsay for a few days last week. They were right next to each other. We talked to Alexis actually. She gave an interview to us. And she said that she saw Lindsay once. They didn`t interact whatsoever. Now just to be clear, Alexis was charged with a burglary being associated with a burglary ring. One of them did, in fact, allegedly burglarize Lindsay`s house, But Alexis Niers was convicted of burglarizing Orlando Bloom, the actor Orlando Bloom`s house, not Lindsay Lohan. So a lot of people are getting that confused. Yes but there were two celebrities in the Lynwood Jail at the same time, right next to each other.
BEHAR: OK she`s a pain in the butt this Alexis whatever her name is. She just likes to burglarize famous people`s houses. All right what about visitors, was she not allowed any visitors this weekend?
BAKER: Well you know this is an interesting thing. The sheriff`s department has kept saying she`s not getting any special treatment. She definitely is getting special treatment. Visiting hours for the Lynwood Jail for a normal person are on Saturdays and Sundays, you are allowed one hour of visitation from family or friends. Lindsay, they lifted that rule for her last week.
BEHAR: Oh.
BAKER: And her mom and her sister and her ex-girlfriend Sam went to see her during the week. So that is already changed. But this weekend, she didn`t see any visitors. She did visit with her lawyer earlier today. And that`s all.
BEHAR: OK well, that`s good for her. And keep us posted on this story because we want to see what happens when she gets out. Should be fabulous. OK thanks, Ken.
Another alleged Mel Gibson tape has been released. Can I just say I think 24 is his best work since the rose garden tape when he threat to bury Oksana under a tree. Now, I want to hear the whole thing with a Scottish brogue. With me to discuss this and more are comedian Judy Gold, star of "GROWING UP TWISTED" on A & E, Dee Snider, and host of "THE THREAD" on Yahoo, Sarah Bernard. OK, radaronline has release recording number seven. And this time Mel goes after actor Timothy Dalton, the father of Oksana`s older child. Listen.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
MEL GIBSON, ACTOR/DIRECTOR: I just want you to know that your whole relationship with me, everything about you was an offense to me, it offended me and pissed me off. Did you get my last message about me being a bad father and Tim being a great dad now?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: No, I didn`t.
GIBSON: You didn`t hear that one? You should go and (EXPLICATIVE DELETED him because I don`t care. You offend me on every (EXPLICATIVE DELETED level. You offend me on every (EXPLICATIVE DELETED level. I despise you.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
BEHAR: All she said was hello.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: That`s fantastic.
BEHAR: She had him at hello. Go ahead.
SARAH BERNARD, HOST, "THE THREAD" ON YAHOO: All that anger that he has is so unbelievable.
BEHAR: Yes.
BERNARD: The way he was just going on about it. You offend me, you`re despicable. And the thing that I love about it is he has said that it was because he was stopping smoking that day.
BEHAR: Oh please.
BERNARD: So this is the best anti-smoking campaign ever. I mean, you can`t -- you know, look at what happens to you? You turn into a crazy ranting lunatic.
DEE SNIDER, STAR, "GROWING UP TWISTED": I love the pacing. I mean I think this work is -
(LAUGHTER)
SNIDER: No, it`s really -
BEHAR: The best work -
SNIDER: It`s almost like Shakespeare.
BEHAR: Yes but this one is slower.
SNIDER: I despise you. It wasn`t clear last time in the rah-rah-rah tape. Now it`s just like - here`s what I`m saying to you.
BEHAR: This has shading.
SNIDER: You suck.
JUDY GOLD, COMEDIAN: It`s very good, I don`t know who directed it, but they did a fantastic job.
SNIDER: Really -
BEHAR: Really -- he ranted a little about Timothy Dalton -
GOLD: Right.
BEHAR: Who is the father of Oksana`s other child. And I think he`s a little jealous of Timothy Dalton.
GOLD: He`s like a 12-year-old girl with the Timothy thing. And he uses the "c" word more than I do which is very, very difficult to do.
BERNARD: Don`t you think it`s interesting though how every couple days a new one comes out. I think it`s actually pretty genius how they`re giving up little snippets every couple days. And now the news is possibly it was Oksana`s sister auto who leaked it. Obviously now she`s denying that because they`re in a custody battle.
BEHAR: Yes.
BERNARD: And it does not look good.
BEHAR: It`s one of those contact pills with time release, and every day a little more --
BERNARD: Just when you think he`s crazy - he`s more crazy.
SNIDER: Timothy Dalton is overjoyed. James bond.
BEHAR: Who hung around him for awhile -
GOLD: He`s going to have such a career -- I want this to be my ring tone. I despise you. Hello? Hi.
SNIDER: Leave your message after the beep.
BEHAR: For your ex-girlfriends.
GOLD: Yes, right, I despise you.
BEHAR: The way he says, I despise you was kind of like -- ah!
SNIDER: Why does she answer the phone?
BEHAR: Well she`s setting him up. She`s setting him up.
BERNARD: Right.
GOLD: -- it`s perfect.
BEHAR: She sets him up, don`t you think?
GOLD: He should say Rosh Hashanah services at my synagogue as well. I despise you.
BEHAR: You know but they`ve only been together for a couple of years. Doesn`t it take years to build up this kind of hatred for the one you love.
SNIDER: Married for 47 years. Isn`t that the answer?
BEHAR: Yes, I mean really.
SNIDER: Hi, honey. I don`t despise you, dear. No, I love - I`m going to say this, the guy`s obviously a mess, but he was successfully with a woman for 27 years.
GOLD: Who is standing by him.
SNIDER: Who is standing by him? Something has gone wildly out of control.
BERNARD: Oh yes.
BEHAR: Well, hello, ka-ching. That deal is not over.
BERNARD: All right. But don`t you think that it`s interesting that more people in Hollywood haven`t come out and said more things about him earlier. I mean they might feel that he`s still potentially going to make money in the future.
GOLD: Going to make some money, like Jodie Foster, why is she hanging out with him?
BEHAR: She`s in a movie called "The Beaver" with him.
GOLD: Well, that`s shocking, isn`t it?
SNIDER: Apparently he doesn`t despise the beaver.
BEHAR: Well who does, everyone loves the beaver.
GOLD: I guess they both love the beaver then.
BEHAR: All right, let`s change the subject, can we change the subject now? Bristol Palin`s baby daddy Levi Johnston posed in "Playgirl" but kept his zipper closed. Well now he`s making a music video. Maybe we`ll get lucky and he`ll keep his mouth closed. OK well in the music video, Levi will be playing a man driven from his lover by her meddling mother. Now do you think that Sarah gets it?
(LAUGHTER)
SNIDER: No, she doesn`t get anything.
GOLD: I think it`s kind of odd that she gets a reality show, and he`s like, oh, maybe I should get back with Bristol.
BEHAR: Oh, I know.
GOLD: It`s totally related.
BERNARD: Can you believe this is the way to start a marriage, already being totally publicly antagonistic to your mother-in-law every couple of months.
SNIDER: I love this kid.
BERNARD: You love this kid?
SNIDER: He`s very irritating Sarah Palin. I love this kid.
BEHAR: Exactly, exactly.
BERNARD: Constantly.
BEHAR: -- noir, Sarah Palin.
GOLD: Are they going to do an episode where they bring the baby to visit his mother in jail? That would be fun.
BEHAR: But you would think that he would want to make her like him now -
GOLD: Right.
BEHAR: But he doesn`t seem to give a damn.
GOLD: No.
BERNARD: That`s what I mean but maybe somebody was saying maybe this is just to pay for the wedding. I mean how else are they going to do this because he`s taking any job. If you invited him to -
GOLD: Well his mother -
BERNARD: -- birthday he`d do it.
GOLD: -- with crystal map --
BEHAR: Now, Dee, you have done a lot of music videos in your day.
SNIDER: Yes, I have.
BEHAR: I mean, Levi has never acted before. Do you think he can pull this off.
SNIDER: This is a problem, you`re saying, a problem he can`t act? We were talking in the green room, who is the artist, the singer?
GOLD: Britney -
BERNARD: Yes, Britney.
SNIDER: Not one person`s ever heard of her.
BEHAR: I don`t know. I`m sorry.
SNIDER: So this is a -- nobody knows. Brilliant.
BEHAR: Brittany Sensor. Yes, she`s no fool.
SNIDER: Right now she`s getting so much attention -
BEHAR: Senser, her name is, yes.
GOLD: Let`s change the name.
BEHAR: To what? Brittany Incenser. I don`t know. But do you think these two kids will ever going to get married.
BERNARD: I think they`ll only get married if they can pre arrange, you know, like a two million payout for the wedding photos. Or maybe get a reality show about the wedding. I mean doesn`t it seem like a business transaction?
GOLD: Oh totally, with him, totally.
BEHAR: OK speaking of weddings, Chelsea Clinton -
GOLD: That`s right -
BEHAR: is going to be getting married. And she`s reportedly getting married this Saturday and she`s inviting president Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Barbara Streisand. Did you get your invitation?
GOLD: Well yes, there is 400 people who are very close relationship with Chelsea. Yes, come on.
BEHAR: Barbara Streisand is a friend of Bill Clinton.
GOLD: I heard they`re taking all references to faithfulness out of the vows.
BEHAR: No. No, come on.
GOLD: No, I just made that up.
BEHAR: No one will wear a blue dress. You know that.
SNIDER: -- has taken on a whole new meaning.
BEHAR: Sarah is in a spinning class with Chelsea, right?
BERNARD: She does go to my spinning class.
BEHAR: So what does she -- tell us.
BERNARD: She`s a great spinner.
GOLD: Oh, god.
BEHAR: Like her father. He could spin it, too.
SNIDER: Really? She`s --
BERNARD: She does seem like a really normal person. But you know what`s really funny about this. One of the news items that broke this week is that all the other weddings, this poor girls that have also planned their weddings, now no one will be able to drive to other weddings because the secret service and everybody is going to be basically having the town in lockdown. I kind of feel bad.
BEHAR: Well that`s what happens, you know.
GOLD: And then it`s two million dollars.
BEHAR: I know and you know George Bush spent only $100,000 on Jenna`s wedding.
GOLD: Yes well if he could have found a way for us to pay for Jenna`s wedding, he would have done that. OK, he likes to chip into other people`s money.
BEHAR: Doesn`t that sound a little over the top, two million dollars for one day.
GOLD: Two million is a lot but there`s only one kid. They only have one kid.
BEHAR: So what? So do I.
SNIDER: Write them a check, man. We told our kid, forget the big wedding. Here`s a check. One point nine -- put a -- you know what I`m saying?
BEHAR: No, no, they want it all. You know but these are two public servants who are now spending two million dollars on their kid. OK, thanks, everybody. Catch Dee Snider in "GROWING UP TWISTED" premiering Tuesday at 10:00 p.m. on A & E and you can see Ms. Judy Gold at the Razz Room in San Francisco this Saturday and Sunday. We`ll be back in a minute. Thank you guys.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
BEHAR: Cheryl Mercuris decided to liven up her social life this summer by renting a house in the Hamptons for two weeks. So she treated herself to a charming little 15 bedroom, 19 bath estate which only cost her $500,000. She hopes to meet new friends and maybe a new man. Half a million dollars. For 37.50, she could have my entire crew.
(LAUGHTER)
BEHAR: Welcome the show, Cheryl.
CHERYL MERCURISRIS, CHAIRMAN AND CEO, QUALITY RESOURCES: Thank you.
BEHAR: What attracted you to this house with 15 bedrooms and 19 baths, the movie theater, a spa, the disco, the squash court, the bowling alley? Was it the coziness of the place?
MERCURIS: Absolutely. It was just something beautiful and extravagant and different to do for the summer with my family.
BEHAR: Uh huh.
MERCURIS: I brought my son and my nephew and the kids are really enjoying it.
BEHAR: But you know $500,000 for two weeks is incredibly extravagant even for the Hamptons, which I know some of those houses can be outrageously expensive. But that seems to be over the top. Did he see you coming, this guy?
MERCURIS: I don`t know. He rented it last year for $425,000, two weeks.
BEHAR: Really, even in this economy, people have that kind of money to just blow on a house with all those bathrooms. Who is cleaning all those bathrooms anyway?
MERCURIS: A staff of three.
BEHAR: Three people?
MERCURIS: Yes.
MERCURIS: I mean you`re spending that much money, that comes out to - - $35,000 a day or 1488 per hour. The question is why are you here? Why aren`t you there now?
MERCURIS: Because I`m here on your show.
BEHAR: You`re wasting valuable time not being in this house. You only have it for two weeks.
MERCURIS: Actually I`m there a little bit longer than two weeks. I`ve been there since the 1st.
BEHAR: He threw in another week. You said you`re there because the dating pool is better here than it is in Florida.
MERCURIS: No, that`s not true.
BEHAR: I got that from a quote in the post.
MERCURIS: I was actually in the Hamptons two summers ago.
BEHAR: Yes.
MERCURIS: And I rented a home on the Atlantic Ocean. It just didn`t seem to get as much publicity as it did this year.
BEHAR: Right so was that part of your strategy maybe to get the publicity? Because you are getting it.
MERCURIS: Absolutely not.
BEHAR: No.
MERCURIS: I have a friend that works at the post and she asked me if she could do an article. And to be honest with you, I had no idea I was going to get this type of publicity.
BEHAR: But it said in the paper -- I don`t know if this is true, you are saying that you wanted to meet a man and that`s part of the reason you rent this. Not true?
MERCURIS: No, not at all. I just happen to be single in the Hamptons, but I`m not in the Hamptons to meet a man.
BEHAR: Well, it`s not the great place to meet a man, I have news for anybody who thinks it is.
MERCURIS: Absolutely no, I`m in the Hamptons to spend time with my family on vacation.
BEHAR: But you can do that at my house which is 1,700 square feet.
MERCURIS: Well it`s fun. It has a bowling alley and tennis courts, squash.
BEHAR: Don`t you ever want to go out?
MERCURIS: We do go out.
BEHAR: I mean if you have a bowling alley in your house and movie theater and a squash court, probably a tennis court, why would you ever leave the house.
MERCURIS: A spa.
BEHAR: And a spa.
MERCURIS: It`s just beautiful.
BEHAR: I know but I would think you`d never want to -- do you go to a restaurant?
MERCURIS: Absolutely, I`ve been to all the restaurants. I`ve been going to parties, I`ve been meeting a lot of fun people.
BEHAR: Uh huh are people getting in touch with you through the internet or anything?
MERCURIS: Yes, they are.
BEHAR: They are. So you`ve become popular -- you are single woman. Maybe you will meet a guy.
MERCURIS: Maybe. That would be great. But that`s not my sole intention and that`s not why I came to the Hamptons.
BEHAR: I would think it was tricky for a woman of your means to meet a man, because you know you have to watch out for gold diggers and people who are out to just exploit you.
MERCURIS: Absolutely. But I`m not a big dater. I work a lot. And I spend time with my family. I have a 6-year-old little boy.
BEHAR: You`re divorced.
MERCURIS: Yes.
BEHAR: What does your ex-husband think about you spending all this money on the house or do you care?
MERCURIS: I really don`t.
BEHAR: Let`s say you were looking for a man in the Hamptons, what kind of man would you look for?
MERCURIS: I`m really just looking for somebody, if I was looking --
BEHAR: Because you`re single now, don`t you want to get married again?
MERCURIS: Yes, some day. But I need to connect with that person.
BEHAR: Of course.
MERCURIS: Somebody that I connect with and have fun with and have chemistry with.
BEHAR: Yes, so have you gone anywhere to try to find that?
MERCURIS: No, I`ve been out. But it seems like everybody wants to hook me up and fix me up, and that`s everybody`s intention to want to put me on a date with somebody or fix me up with their friend.
BEHAR: Well you know a lot of women would say great, I wish my friend would do that for me --
MERCURIS: I just believe if it`s meant to be, it`s meant to be and it will happen.
BEHAR: Well good luck, have fun.
MERCURIS: Thank you.
BEHAR: Thanks very much, good luck to you.
MERCURIS: Thank you.
BEHAR: We`ll be right back.
NANCY GRACE, HLN ANCHOR: Hello? Hello. Stay with us friends we are speaking justice.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
BEHAR: So my last guest Cheryl Mercuris is very wealthy and very single. She just rented a house in the Hamptons for $500,000 for two weeks. She said she didn`t do it to meet a man. I guess she just likes cleaning and vacuuming.
(LAUGHTER)
Question, can renting a half a million dollar estate in the Hamptons help a divorced mom find Mr. Right? Joining me to discuss is the expert herself, Patti Stanger the host of "MILLIONAIRE MATCHMAKER." So Patti, welcome, honey.
PATTI STANGER, "MILLIONAIRE MATCHMAKER": Thanks.
BEHAR: So this woman, Cheryl Mercuris, she said she didn`t really rent this giagundo (ph) house to meet a guy, did you buy it?
STANGER: She tried out for our show. She actually called in so I really feel like you know she`s doing this to get exposure, page 6 and all, getting on your show, now her Facebook will blow up and she`ll take offers.
BEHAR: I see well I think she`s been getting offers already. I was reading that. But I mean let`s talk about just a general idea of a woman of means, a lot of money, meeting a guy. Should she go to the Hamptons? I don`t think so.
STANGER: You know what the best place to meet someone if you want a Wall Street or in her case, Wall Street during the day, coffee, lunch -
BEHAR: Right.
STANGER: Hanging out, talking to the bartender, getting to know the scene. That`s where the men are on the exchange floor. When they go to get a bathroom break, you can meet them. Going to the Hamptons, getting caught up in all the mishy gas, no, not going to happen.
BEHAR: It`s not -- and a lot of those hedge funds are already married.
STANGER: Right or broke.
BEHAR: Right or broke because of the last downturn. What about spending a half million dollar on a rental, though?
STANGER: That`s crazy. What is it, $1,448 an hour. That`s insane.
BEHAR: That is crazy. And who needs all those things in your house, a bowling alley, it`s exhausting. What would you give -- what advice would you give to a woman who`s a millionaire? You do it all the time.
STANGER: Yes take the credit card and put it away. you know this season on "MILLIONAIRE MATCHMAKER" that`s coming up in October all the women, you know, all the millionaires led with their money. Planned the date, paid for the date. I said to them, you`re doing the worst thing you can do. You snip, snip, snip downstairs, he ends up becoming your son because you emasculate the man and he doesn`t try to win your heart. And that`s the worst think you can do. Put the credit card away.
BEHAR: Uh huh, because men really want to be the bread winner, don`t they, to a large extent.
STANGER: Yes, they do.
BEHAR: But I always, this is my motto about men. Make your own money and marry a guy whose funny.
STANGER: That`s my mother married, exactly. She said funny is the sexiest thing alive.
BEHAR: Absolutely true. Now before we go, I only have a little time left for you. I must hear what would you tell Mel Gibson now that he`s going to be single again and Oksana?
STANGER: Well I said I would fix him up if he converted to Judaism.
BEHAR: Fat chance.
STANGER: I would perform the circumcision and rabbi Shmuley is going to do the bar mitzvah. But you know, it is beyond comprehension. He needs to go back on his meds, first of all, and then he needs a major intervention. Look him up for a year, put him on an island, you know.
BEHAR: Some people say it`s because he drinks that he is so angry and evil. No.
STANGER: No, I mean I know a lot of alcoholics. They don`t get that rageaholic.
BEHAR: Exactly.
STANGER: There`s some really deep dark secret in his family that is twisting his --
BEHAR: Well his father is a holocaust survivor. There`s a little twisted sister in there.
STANGER: Right, we could put him in (inaudible) and lock the doors and give him water and bread.
BEHAR: That`s a great idea, that`s right.
STANGER: We could do that.
BEHAR: But what about Oksana? She`s attracted to some bad guys. Well no, Timothy Dalton was a nice guy. She liked that marriage, I guess.
STANGER: Yes but she targeted him, she went after him --
BEHAR: Who, Mel?
STANGER: I think she targeted him. I think she knew what she was getting into and now it kind of turned on her now she`s turning back on him.
BEHAR: Right.
STANGER: The toxic and the toxic.
BEHAR: That`s true, as Chris Rock said, crack head go with crack head. I love that, it`s the best thing he ever said.
STANGER: I`m stealing that.
BEHAR: Steal if from Chris, I steal it all the time. Thanks very much.
STANGER: Thank you.
BEHAR: OK catch millionaire matchmaker Tuesday nights at 10:00 on Bravo. And be on the lookout for the new season in October. Good night everybody.
