COLLEEN MCEDWARDS, CNN ANCHOR: Well, the devil is into details here in television. And Bob Franken's microphone actually sort of snapped and fell off a few minutes ago. That's the technical trouble that we ended up having. But we've got him back now.

He can hear us and we can hear him. And he has got the latest details for us on the investigation into that missing Washington intern, Chandra Levy -- Bob, go ahead.

BOB FRANKEN, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Well, I did want to report that the latest development has been confirmed by CNN in a conversation with Linda Zamsky. She is the aunt of Chandra Levy, who has told the "Washington Post" that Chandra Levy told her, beginning last autumn, that she was having a romantic relationship with Congressman Gary Condit. She described it as very secretive. It involved weekends spent at the Condit apartment here in Washington and some exchange of gifts.

Of course, Chandra Levy is the 24-year-old former Washington intern -- not intern for Congressman Condit, but for the Bureau of Prisons here -- who disappeared just as she was planning to go home when her internship had been abruptly ended. Now, there has been constant speculation -- and that's the word: "speculation" -- that there was a romantic relationship between the congressman and the intern.

Congressman Condit, through spokespeople, up until now had repeatedly denied that there was such a relationship. And as the investigation expands, it actually got closer to Congressman Condit when his wife was secretly flown to Washington, accompanied by the Congressman, where she was interviewed. Carolyn Condit, the wife of Congressman Condit, was interviewed by FBI agents in a Northern Virginian FBI office -- Northern Virginia being Suburban Washington.

Congressman Condit had said that he did not attend July 4 parades in his congressional district because there was a conflict that had come up. The conflict, of course, was the very, very, very closely held trip to Washington so that interview could be held. But very few details about what was contained in the interview except that investigators have told CNN repeatedly in the past that since it was new to them, that Mrs. Condit had been in Washington about the time that Chandra Levy disappeared, they just wanted to find out what she knew -- Colleen.

MCEDWARDS: All right, CNN's Bob Franken bringing us up-to-date -- thanks very much.
