VINCE CELLINI, CNN ANCHOR: And it is official. As of today, actors Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman are divorced.

But just a few hours ago, they were together again -- sort of.

CNN's Sherri Sylvester tells us it's almost like life imitating art.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

SHERRI SYLVESTER (voice over): Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman spent the last hour of their marriage with dozens of cameras rolling, hoping to catch a shot of them together. That didn't happen.

NICOLE KIDMAN, ACTRESS: My date for the night.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Your date for the night.

KIDMAN: My best friend.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: How long have you known your best friend?

KIDMAN: Fifteen years.

SYLVESTER: She brought an old Australian chum. His date was the film's producer.

(on camera): Nicole Kidman was the first to arrive. Tom Cruise arrived last. And you can see him a little bit behind me. He did, however, praise Nicole Kidman's role in the film. He said it is a brilliant tour de force performance.

SYLVESTER (voice over): She stars in the supernatural thriller as a stressed-out mom living in a haunted house. He produces "The Other" is based on a story by writer-director Alejandro Amenabar.

TOM CRUISE, ACTOR: He asked me to produce this picture, so I gave it to Nic, who I thought would be perfect for the role. And it's a tour de force performance for her, and I am very proud of her.

SYLVESTER: The premiere was the talk of the town reminding, some of "America's Sweethearts," in which two divorcing stars are forced to promote a film together. Kidman and Cruise separately but equally handled the press. CRUISE: I think it's nice. It's great for the movie. We are here to celebrate this picture that we all worked very hard on. So I think it's nice.

SYLVESTER (on camera): All right. Any pressure -- do you feel any pressure walking in the door with this (UNINTELLIGIBLE) press? Fifty-eight cameras down there.

CRUISE: Well, there is always pressure. There is always pressure. I am all right.

SYLVESTOR: Kidman has promoted back-to-back features against a full-court press.

TINA BROWN, "TALK" MAGAZINE: She is handling herself with enormous gallantry. I think she must have been going through a lot of private pain, but she has put her best foot forward, and she is trying to start a new life.

SYLVESTER: A normal life, in Kidman's words, begins after the interviews are over.

KIDMAN: Being with my kids, and we're going back to Sydney. And I've worked really hard, and so I am just going to take a break.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Hang with friends.

KIDMAN: Yes.

SYLVESTER: Sherri Sylvester, CNN, Hollywood.
