Family Funeral For Those Killed by Drunken Police Officer

COLLEEN MCEDWARDS, CNN ANCHOR: We want to go to New York now and more on the fallout from that alleged drunken driving accident last weekend that took the lives of members of a family as they were crossing the street. They were hit by a police officer driving allegedly drunk. Funeral services begin in two hours for those victims.

Drinking in a parking lot and an off-limits topless bar have gotten 17 New York officers disciplined or transferred in connection with all of this.

CNN's Jason Carroll has been following developments for us, and joins us now live -- Jason.

JASON CARROLL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Colleen, the mayor has called the results of their investigation a major event. As you said, 17 officers were disciplined for drinking or failing to supervise those who were drinking with officer Joseph Gray.

Joseph Gray is accused in the DWI accident involving Maria Herrera, her four-year-old son, Andy, her sister, Dilcia. They were all killed, and an emergency C-section to try and save Herrera's baby did not work. That baby died a day after the accident.

Funeral services will be getting under way for the family here in Brooklyn at St. Michael's Church. As you said, that is going to happen in just a little while at about 10:00 a.m. Hundreds are expected to attend, including the mayor, Mayor Rudy Giuliani. He is expected to be here as well.

The family has said, Colleen, all along that they want justice. They mayor says he wants justice too, and that his investigation into what happened in this accident is not over -- Colleen.
