COLLEEN MCEDWARDS, CNN ANCHOR: Well, we're getting into the middle of August already, can you believe it? The summer's almost gone. That means kids are going to be heading back to school over the next few days and weeks, and that's the subject of our "Surfing into Saturday" segment with Daniel Sieberg. He's here to walk us through some Web sites that will help you make the transition.
DANIEL SIEBERG, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Colleen. It's hard to believe you can start saying it's time to go back to school.
MCEDWARDS: I know, but it is.
SIEBERG: Already the end of summer.
MCEDWARDS: Help us.
SIEBERG: Well, we've got everything from safety tips to fashion hazards, and what not to wear to school, actually. So we're going to start off with something that everybody needs in the mornings, a good breakfast, you know, to have some energy and be productive throughout the day.
MCEDWARDS: You bet.
SIEBERG: Every kid needs something like this. So for parents who start running into that chaotic morning, they don't have time to make a nice big breakfast, there are some really good ideas on this site by Childfun. They've got everything from health shakes to this idea called horse chow, which may not sound all that appetizing initially, but it's got a combination of fruit and oatmeal and it's supposed to be quick and easy for mornings that are on the go.
MCEDWARDS: I was going to say that doesn't sound like something you want to feed your kids, but if it's fruit and oatmeal, then you do.
SIEBERG: Right, got some health to it.
Now we go to this site, which is from the National Safety Prevention Counsel, and they've got some safety tips for kids -- things like remembering to tell your parents where you go after school, knowing your contact information at home and that sort of thing. And we've also got a safety tip site here for parents. It's a checklist of knowing where your kids are going. You could be planning a walking route with them on the first day of school, especially for younger kids who may not be familiar with the route on how to get to school.
MCEDWARDS: Get them ready, give them the information they need.
SIEBERG: Right. Put the breakfast in them and make sure they get there.
MCEDWARDS: You betcha.
SIEBERG: Now, this next site we've got -- is hoping to save people some time. It can always be a bit overwhelming when you think of the school supplies that kids need for wherever they're going. Now, it's going to vary depending on which district you're in or which school you're at, but this site actually offers a really comprehensive list of just some tips on what you need: binders and pens and paper.
MCEDWARDS: Yes, it's actually done in a nice chart, too, so you can kind of organize yourself.
SIEBERG: Exactly. This site itself is a list organizer, that's what it does. It tries to save you some time, make it not so overwhelming when you're putting things together.
Now, this last site we've got -- we didn't want to talk too much about a particularly clothing line, so we thought we'd have a little bit of fun.
MCEDWARDS: Yes, because kids want their clothes, don't they? I mean, especially as they get older -- how they look on that first day back to school -- huge.
SIEBERG: Exactly. It's part of the fun of going back to school, is that new wardrobe. So in this case we decided to go the other way, and look at clothes you wouldn't want to by.
(LAUGHTER)
MCEDWARDS: Good for you.
SIEBERG: And this is called the Badfads museum. And they've got everything here from leisure suits, as you can see, to the bouffant hairdo that you may not want to get into when you go back to school.
MCEDWARDS: Yeah.
SIEBERG: So it's kind of a tongue-in-cheek site.
MCEDWARDS: Yes, leisure suit, it says circa 1975. Indeed, "a suit consisting of a shirt jacket, matching trousers for informal wear."
SIEBERG: Yes, I don't think you'd be too popular going back wearing that.
MCEDWARDS: "Goofy," I think, is how most kids would describe it. SIEBERG: Right, exactly. But now if you do want to get something from your favorite store, often retail sites, you simply just need to put in "dot com" after your favorite store and they've got their own Web site.
And if you want more on these sites -- I know it's a lot to remember at once -- we have a story at cnn.com/tech all about our surfing into Saturday sites.
We've also got a quick vote here where you can vote on whether the Internet helps you in your back-to-school preparations and that sort of thing.
MCEDWARDS: All right. So some information and some fun to be had there. Thanks very much, Daniel Seiberg. Appreciate it.
