COLLEEN MCEDWARDS, CNN ANCHOR: Well, it is Friday, folks. You ready to get out of town, maybe relax a little bit?
Well, CNN's Richard Quest ends his weeklong look at summer travel hot spots. Today he takes us clubbing on the Spanish island of Ibiza.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
(MUSIC PLAYING)
RICHARD QUEST, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): They sleep through the day so they can party all night, these are the clubbers of Ibiza. For summer clubbing in Europe, this is the only place to be. Ibiza has seven huge venues. Every night they do battle for the tens of thousands of youngsters who come here to party.
KEVIN LAWLOR, DANCE VALLEY PROMOTER: If you say to anybody internationally around the world Ibiza, the first thing that's going to come to their mind is club culture, it's as simple as that. That's -- it is -- is the Balearic Island of house music is where it all began for a lot of us and it's where it always will be.
QUEST: Meet the stars of the clubs, not the music or artists, but those who play it.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We can watch it again quick.
QUEST: Lucien Foort, Michel De Hey and Billy Nasty, DJs who have been flown in to perform for just one night.
BILLY NASTY, AMNESIA DJ: This is a new form of entertainment. DJ are the bands -- modern day bands, and some people could say that we're only playing records but each one of us has a kind of sound and a shape that we kind of individually bring to the table.
QUEST: Keeping the club moving is the DJs art and for that they're well paid. Amnesia Club will pay up to $10,000 for the line up of tonight's DJs.
MICHEL DE HEY, AMNESIA DJ: I get the people in. If I want to get the people in the club why I'm -- if I don't get the people in for Dance Valley on Friday night here at Amnesia, they won't book me because why bother bringing me over, giving me a place to stay and giving me money to play if there's nobody coming. QUEST: Getting into these clubs isn't cheap. Around $36 a time and drinks are expensive, 1,000 peseta, that's around $5 for a bottle of water. It's money well spent for those who are here.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It's very expensive but it's worth it.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Wicked. I'll definitely be back next summer.
QUEST (on camera): Other islands have tried to wrestle away the title of clubbing capital of Europe but they haven't succeeded, perhaps that's because here on Ibiza they believe it's more than just a business. As they say, (SPEAKING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE). It's also a (SPEAKING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE)
(voice-over): For Amnesia, this has been a good night. The club's almost full, but it's a struggle night after night making sure you're No. 1.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It doesn't stop here. It's full on 24/7, 7 days a week. It's not just tonight. I mean Friday night you have Dance Valley here in Amnesia, Ministry of Sound in Pacha, Xtravaganza in Privilege. In Eden, there's (UNINTELLIGIBLE) Miami. There's so many different nights that going on. There is guerrilla warfare here on the island. There's no prisoners taken.
QUEST: Night gives way to morning, but the club just keeps on going. This is for the hardcore clubbers. After all, there's plenty of time to sleep on the beach.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
And it must be said there really are people who go to those clubs every single night for 9 or 10 hours and then just sleep the day away. Some of them haven't even got a hotel room, they sleep on the beach.
This is what it's all about of course, I love Ibiza, the CD sound, the house music. Colleen, I know you'll be familiar with house garage and trance. It all sounds a bit off to me. I can tell you, after nine hours of listening to this, I was ready to sit down and have a strong cup of tea.
MCEDWARDS: Richard Quest, thanks very much. And I confess, I have no idea what music you're talking about, but it looks like you had a great time. Thanks so much.
