CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: Something like two thirds of Americans use the Internet and that is a lot of eyes to see those pop up ads on the Web sites that we visit. So our high tech guru Alison Thomas here to show us how to shoot down those pop up ads. We don't have to put up with them, do we?

ALLISON TOM, CNN CORRESPONDENT: We don't have to and many people don't realize this. So we're going to go to a number of different sites on the Web to show you how you can get rid of them and to block them from interrupting your browsing on the Internet.

LIN: OK.

TOM: The first one is Panic Ware. This is a Web site where you can download this particular software and then you have to install it. But it takes just a couple of minutes to do. Once you do that, it will always be on your browser whenever you're going onto the Internet and it'll help block some of these ads that you might see. This one works only for Internet Explorer so that's important for people to know.

But what we're going to show you is this one here, Pop-Up Killer. It's another one that's very savvy to get all of these ads away from your viewing when you're online. And this will work for both Internet Explorer as well as with Netscape. It also works with a number of other different applications. This one takes a little bit longer, I think, all told once we downloaded it and then we installed it on the computer. It took about 10 minutes to do.

But the thing that's really neat about this is that as you're perusing on the Web, you'll find that here is the little Pop-Up Killer icon. This will show you all of the Web sites that you're going onto. So these are the detected pop ups. And then here, Carol, is where you can see the ones, the ads that have actually come through that you didn't even get to see, and this is what it actually filtered out.

So it's a great way to be able to avoid seeing all these ads that come up that you might be, you know, interrupted with. And what's kind of fun about this one, too, is that we have the sound properties. And on this you can select the kind of noise that you might like to have when a particular ad comes up.

LIN: Like a warning?

TOM: Exactly.

LIN: OK.

TOM: So you don't have to necessarily have this up, but it's just kind of fun. There's a lot of different ways that you can choose this...

LIN: So you know when you're being hit?

TOM: Exactly. And it's kind of a fun way to do that. You can just kind of pick the different sounds that you might want to have up on your screen. And this way it allows you to keep going through your browsers and not being interrupted with these.

We also have a lot of Mac users out there. This is a Web site, webwasher.com. This is a good site that people can go to. The same kind of thing, you just download it onto your computer, install it and there you'll basically be carefree with any of these ads that pop up on your screen.

LIN: OK, so if anybody missed these addresses, can they get it on cnn.com?

TOM: We have it on our companion "Time" Web site, time.com. But we'll also try to get them up on cnn.com, too.

LIN: OK. Fish around.

TOM: Yes.

LIN: Thanks so much, Alison.

TOM: You're welcome.
