MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: A little bit of breaking news this morning. We have learned just within the past half hour, the longest- serving majority leader of the Senate, Mike Mansfield, Democrat of Montana, is dead at the age of 98. He died at the Walter Reed Army Hospital in suburban Washington.

He had received a pacemaker on September 7 after complaining of feeling weak.

Mansfield served 34 years in Congress, including 15 years as the leader of his party in the Senate from 1961 until his retirement in 1976. He was an ardent opponent of the Vietnam War and was quoted at one time as saying that that was his biggest disappointment -- not able to stop or slow down the Vietnam War.
