APEC Summit Expected to give Strong Statement Condemning U.S. Terrorist Attacks

PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: President Bush is in China this morning where he is meeting with President Jiang Zemin. The meeting comes in advance of the APEC summit. Mr. Bush will try to build on his coalition against terrorism.
Our John King is traveling with the president. He joins us from Shanghai.
Nighttime there, good morning from here -- hi, John.
JOHN KING, CNN SENIOR WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT: Good evening to you, good morning to you from Shanghai, Paula.
As you mentioned, the president, his first meeting with the Chinese president Jiang Zemin earlier today, a big event in any event. Remember back just a few months the tensions between the United States and China over the EP-3 surveillance plane standoff. That incident all but forgotten as Mr. Bush met with the Chinese leader today.
Item No. 1, of course, the war on terrorism. Mr. Bush says the Chinese are sharing intelligence. He emerged from their first meeting today based -- to say that Beijing and Washington are standing side by side in the war on terrorism. The president saying he is quite satisfied with the support from the Chinese leader and the Chinese people, but President Jiang making clear as the two leaders spoke to reports that China's support does not come without some limitations.

JIANG ZEMIN, PRESIDENT OF CHINA (through translator): We hope that anti-terrorism efforts can have clear (INAUDIBLE) targets and (INAUDIBLE) should hit accurately and also avoid innocent casualties. And what is more, the role of the United Nations should be brought into forthright (ph).

KING: Later in the day, the president met with the South Korean president Kim Dae Jung. In the meeting with the South Korean leader, Mr. Kim praising President Bush for assembling the international coalition to fight terrorism, promising that South Korea would do its part. Mr. Bush said he believes support here at the annual Asia Pacific Economic Summit was near unanimous for the U.S. view. Some of the Muslim leaders here representing their countries have voiced concerns about the U.S. air strikes. Mr. Bush said he expected a very strong statement of support from the summit, but he also acknowledged at the same time that over time -- this is a campaign he has said will go on for several years. Mr. Bush acknowledging that over time the strength of the international coalition will be tested.

GEORGE W. BUSH, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: I am most pleased with the support we're receiving here, and I look forward to continuing to describe our efforts to our close friends and allies and they will see in me a determination to succeed. And I fully understand that some over time may grow weary and may tire, but they'll realize the United States of America under my leadership will not. We must be successful in the war against terror.

KING: Mr. Bush resting this evening here in Shanghai. On tap tomorrow, a one-on-one meeting with the Russian president Vladimir Putin.
And again, U.S. officials working on the language in that statement to be endorsed by the APEC summit this weekend, expecting a strong statement condemning the terrorist strikes on the Untied States of September 11 and also expecting a strong promise from the 21-member summit to completely support and cooperate with the United States in the financial crackdown on support for terrorist groups -- Paula.
