DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Well whether or not you're rooting for the Arizona Diamondbacks or the New York Yankees, you have to agree it was one of the best World Series in baseball history.

Our John Giannone brings us the highlights from the Valley of the Sun.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JOHN GIANNONE, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): (INAUDIBLE) 91 days removed from his last blow in saving the playoffs, yet in the blink of an eye, either champagne soaked or tear filled, came the final heartbeat of a palpitating World Series. And it came from Luis Gonzalez who, for all his prodigious power this season, needed only about a hundred feet to steel the trophy and a moment.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

LUIS GONZALEZ, ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS: The key situation of driving the winning run in the World Series, one of the best relievers in all of baseball and to be honest with you, that was the first time I've choked up all year. Just looking in on everything and got jammed. I knew the infield was playing in. I just wanted -- I didn't have to hit it hard, just try to loop something out there and get it in play.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MARIANO RIVERA, NEW YORK YANKEES: I'm not perfect, you know, and well, I was trying to do my best could have happened today, you know, unfortunately it was a big game today so, yes, I couldn't finish it up.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DEREK JETER, NEW YORK YANKEES: You know you tip your hat to the other team because they came up and they battled when most teams would have given up and, you know, they beat us today.

(END VIDEO CLIP) (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MARK GRACE, ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS: In order to beat them you've got to get a little bit lucky and we got lucky. He made an error and then we got a couple of base hits off of Mariano Rivera, I can't believe it. That's you know -- that's like getting -- that's like -- it's like winning in the bottom of the ninth off God.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

GIANNONE: Mystic and aura and championship experience were supposed to be New York's allies in this series, but when the wins were totaled and the bottles were uncorked, the dynasty was history, overcome by a higher dose of resilience and a remarkable combination punch.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MATT WILLIAMS, ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS: It's better than the fantasy. We've -- you're very lucky if you get a chance to come here and you should enjoy it and that's what we did. And we feel fortunate to be world champions, but it's a lot of hard work and we feel satisfied and we feel fortunate.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

PAUL O'NEILL, NEW YORK YANKEES: They showed a lot of heart. We showed a lot of heart. Unbelievable series, but I mean the disappointment in here right now I think speaks for itself.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JETER: It's not a good feeling. You know we were in a position to win another championship but it didn't happen so you remember this feeling and you never want to experience it again.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CURT SCHILLING, ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS: Well we beat the best team in baseball to win a World Series. I mean it took 30 some guys eight months of hard work and you just can't imagine the feeling of looking around the room and knowing that every single guy in that room is responsible for that World Series trophy that's now in the Arizona Diamondbacks' possession.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

GIANNONE (on camera): In winning the title in the fourth year of existence, the Diamondbacks vested by one season the record the Florida Marlins set in 1997. That team was dismantled shortly afterwards because of financial problems which led Diamondbacks' owner Jerry Colangelo to issue a solemn vow to his city late Sunday night. Said Colangelo -- quote -- "There is no way this team will be another Florida Marlins. We'll do what it takes and spend what we have to compete next year."

At the World Series in Phoenix, I'm John Giannone.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

KAGAN: And that will be reassuring words for Arizona fans savoring their first world championship in any sport of any kind.
