CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Hip hop, pop and youth ruled at the American Music Awards last night. But as CNN's Eric Horng explains, the biggest and oldest pop didn't come until the end of the show.

ERIC HORNG, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The American Music Awards shined on three of the year's most popular acts: piano/songstress Alicia Keys, R&B trio Destiny's Child, and singer Aaliyah. All three coming away with a pair of awards. The 20-year- old Keys, who entered the evening with a leading five nominations, took home the favorite new artist prize in both the pop/rock and soul R&B categories.
ALICIA KEYS, SINGER: Thank you. This has been a fantastic year. This has been an unbelievable year.
HORNG: Destiny's Child grabbed awards for favorite soul R&B duo or group and for favorite pop/rock album. Aaliyah, killed in a plane crash August 25, was honored with the favorite R&B album and female artist prizes, prompting standing ovations.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Get up baby girl, we miss you.
HORNG: Boy band 'N Sync beat out the Dave Matthews Band and U-2 for favorite pop/rock band, and received a mixed reception.
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, 'N SYNC: Oh quite booing, U-2 is going to get Grammys.
HORNG: Other winners included Tim McGraw, for favorite country album; Limp Bizkit, in the alternative artist category; Nelly, for favorite rap hip hop performer; and Luther Vandross, for favorite male soul R&B artist.
But perhaps the most notable of the evening came at the end of the show with an appearance by Michael Jackson. Jackson was honored as artist of the century.
