CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: While Secretary of State Colin Powell is in Lebanon and Syria today, U.S. officials are moving ahead with talks with Israeli and Palestinian officials. CNN's Jerrold Kessel is in Jerusalem with that -- good morning, Jerrold.
JERROLD KESSEL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Carol. And (UNINTELLIGIBLE) how volatile the situation remains, there have been more incidents and more deaths to report. The Palestinians are reporting two people, a young man and a young woman, killed in separate shooting incidents in the West Bank. No further details, but this apparently as the Israelis continue their scouring operations in various towns and villages for what they call are terror suspects.
Also, two Palestinians intercepted in an attack mission apparently on one of the Jewish settlements in Gaza, intercepted and killed by Israeli forces there. That reported by the Israeli army.
And then the most contentious issue is this Israeli sweep, which continues in Palestinian towns. The aftermath of that very fierce battle in the refugee camp of Jenin, which is (UNINTELLIGIBLE) contentious argument between the Israelis and Palestinians about just how many bodies there are there, how many people were killed on the Palestinian side, whether they were gunmen or civilians.
Well, today for the first time, the Israelis have been allowing into that refugee camp to inspect through the rubble and the damage done there, international relief agencies including the Red Cross and members of the Red Crescent, to discern how many bodies are there, how many there might be still under the rubble of homes and to try to get them out for burial. This is in conjunction with the Israel army.
No timetable yet on the winding up of Mr. Sharon's campaign though, even as he puts on the table a new plan for a political and diplomatic movement beyond this campaign.
COSTELLO: All right. Jerrold Kessel reporting live for us from Jerusalem this morning -- thank you.
