CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Destiny's Child, U2 and Alicia Keys are among the winners of the World Music Awards. The ceremony was broadcast last night in more than 160 countries, including our own.
And joining me this morning to talk about the World Music Awards is Tracy St. George, a deejay at Q100 radio right here in Atlanta.
TRACY ST. GEORGE, DEEJAY, Q100: Yes.
COSTELLO: Thanks for coming back. The World Music Awards, what in the world are the World Music Awards?
ST. GEORGE: Well, these awards are different than other ones. They are actually decided only by record sales. So it's not by popularity. It's not by what endorsement deals you have, your clothing lines. It's strictly album sales. So this actually is kind of a really important award show for the artists.
COSTELLO: Got you. So who were among the winners?
ST. GEORGE: Destiny's Child, of course, winning five awards last night. Alicia Keys won a bunch of awards again, and of course, did "Falling" again. She did that one live again. She has got to be sick of that one. Dido was a big winner, which really surprised me last night.
COSTELLO: Why?
ST. GEORGE: Because she beat Madonna, she beat J.Lo and Britney Spears.
COSTELLO: Wow!
ST. GEORGE: I know! And you wouldn't think -- I mean, obviously our people are huge over here, but who knew that she was the world's biggest seller in the world. I mean, it's the planet, and I know one song by her.
COSTELLO: Yes.
ST. GEORGE: "Thank you," that's the only song I know by Dido, but you know, J.Lo, Britney Spears and Madonna, I can name 1,000 records. So it's really -- it's quite amazing how the world sees the music as opposed to just the country that we're in. COSTELLO: Well, something that really surprised me, Linkin Park won, Shaggy won.
ST. GEORGE: Yes. Exactly.
COSTELLO: What was the other group?
ST. GEORGE: Enya.
COSTELLO: Oh, Enya.
ST. GEORGE: The world's best selling female.
COSTELLO: The world's best selling female is Enya. The world's best selling male artist was Shaggy.
ST. GEORGE: Shaggy, yes.
COSTELLO: That doesn't make sense.
ST. GEORGE: It really doesn't, but you know, that's what the world's taste is apparently.
COSTELLO: What is the appeal of Enya throughout the world? Because she is very popular in America now too.
ST. GEORGE: Yes, I know. I don't know, because I think she is really nice and all. I like her -- that's another one I know one song. So...
COSTELLO: Here it is. I think all of her songs actually...
ST. GEORGE: ... around the world...
COSTELLO: ... sound like this. It's just one big song.
ST. GEORGE: It is. Exactly. It's the "Dennis" (ph) song (UNINTELLIGIBLE) over and over.
COSTELLO: And why do you think there is this fascination with rap artists, I guess like Shaggy and Linkin Park? I guess that's more hip-hop though.
ST. GEORGE: It's kind of rock collaboration type really. I think a lot of artists now, like NSync, I think the whole pop trend is kind of on the downside now, so I think we're going to see a lot of collaboration like with NSync and Nelly. So we're going to see a lot of crossover, so the love keeps going into different formats and different trends and that artists are going into radio stations. So I think that also helps.
COSTELLO: The biggest selling group in the world is the Beatles.
ST. GEORGE: In Britain, yes.
COSTELLO: In Britain. ST. GEORGE: Yes, in Britain. Yes, the British group, the largest one is the Beatles. I mean, that's really -- it's strange that they are still selling so many thousands, millions of records.
COSTELLO: Which doesn't say much about the other groups in Britain.
ST. GEORGE: Yes! It's kind of sad. I feel bad.
COSTELLO: I know. I know. OK, again, tell us why these World Music Awards are important, because there are so many award shows concerning artists of every type? I think that many of us are just getting tired of them, and we say, who cares? I mean, don't you wonder what the ratings were for the World Music Awards last night?
ST. GEORGE: I do, because I actually missed the first hour. I didn't know it was on. I mean, it came on like 7:00, so for this being so large, was strictly album sales, this is total, and this is so different than just a popularity contest, which seems kind of a lot of the other contests that the awards shows are, that this would not be as large as the other ones.
COSTELLO: You mean, ratings-wise on television?
ST. GEORGE: Right.
COSTELLO: Chad, did you watch it?
CHAD MYERS, METEOROLOGIST: Yes, right, yes.
COSTELLO: The World Music Awards.
ST. GEORGE: He's (UNINTELLIGIBLE) Enya.
COSTELLO: Yes.
MYERS: (singing): I can see da, da, dad a da. That's (UNINTELLIGIBLE).
ST. GEORGE: Nice job.
MYERS: Is that the one?
ST. GEORGE: Yes, that is the one.
COSTELLO: This is bad.
MYERS: They don't let me sing in church, so that's OK. (UNINTELLIGIBLE).
COSTELLO: Yes, thank goodness.
MYERS: Yes, (UNINTELLIGIBLE).
COSTELLO: OK. This is fast falling apart. So I think we should wrap it up. Thank you, Tracy St. George, for joining us this morning. ST. GEORGE: Thank you.
COSTELLO: We appreciate it.
