CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Let's travel to Hollywood now, shall we? Winona Ryder has learned that a media circus can be dangerous. It happened yesterday in Beverly Hills. Did you hear about it? While she was making her court appearance on shoplifting charges, something happened.
Our Paul Clinton has details.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
PAUL CLINTON, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): This is the type of media attention Winona Ryder often commands. But the scene was much different while attending a preliminary hearing to determine whether she would actually go to trial on four felony charges, charges stemming from an arrest for shoplifting at Saks Fifth Avenue.
While entering the courthouse, a number of people were shoved backwards, causing a chain reaction resulting in injury to Ryder's arm. During an appearance on "CNN's LARRY KING LIVE," Ryder's attorney discussed her injuries.
MARK GERAGOS, WINONA RYDER'S ATTORNEY: It turns out that she has got a broken arm and acute swelling to the arm as well.
LARRY KING, HOST: Did they cast it?
GERAGOS: They did not. They've got it in a sling right now. We are going to go to the orthopedist tomorrow.
CLINTON: This has not been the only drama surrounding the charges for which Ryder has pleaded not guilty.
WINONA RYDER, ACTRESS: Oh, I love you, Ron.
CLINTON: Ryder has repeatedly made light of her current legal woes. She hosted "Saturday Night Live" and made several veiled references to her legal problems.
ADAM SANDLER, ACTOR: You should come straight with us, so...
RYDER: I know.
SANDLER: I'm going to ask you.
RYDER: OK.
CLINTON: As she did this past weekend with Adam Sandler at the MTV Movie Awards. Sandler and Ryder's new film, "Mr. Deeds," opens June 28. Apparently, despite legal entanglements, promotion for the film will continue. Despite her injury, the girl will not be interrupted for long. The preliminary hearing is now set for Thursday.
