CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Well you could call it a miracle, an unbelievable miracle, 11 miners trapped underground for nearly a week in what could have been their watery grave, they have been pulled up alive.
Live via videophone, Ryan Chilcote in southern Russia this morning.

Tell us about it -- Ryan.

RYAN CHILCOTE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, good morning, Carol.

A remarkable morning here in southern Russia indeed. This is day six of the rescue operation. These 11 miners that were brought to the surface within the last two hours survived five-and-a-half days in the pitch dark with no food or water or any communication with the outside world since the accident took place on Thursday.

The first 10 of the 11 were actually able to walk out of the mine on their own feet. Yes, unbelievable. The 11th was in the poorest condition of the group. He had to be brought out on a stretcher. We are told he is going to be OK. All 11 of them have been brought to the hospital. That's where they are getting some medical attention. Their condition has been described as satisfactory, and their relatives are going to get their first chance to speak with their loved ones in just about three-and-a-half hours.

One man, however, did perish before help was able to get to him, one of the 13 miners that they were still looking for. And yet another miner still remains missing in the mine. So this rescue operation is not over. There is still one man missing inside the mine. It is an enormous mine and it could take them days, hours or even days to find him, but Russian officials remain committed to bring the last man out dead or alive.

COSTELLO: All right. Ryan Chilcote reporting live via videophone from southern Russia this morning.
