CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Time now for 'Dollars & Deals.' This morning, consumer guru Clark Howard is surfing for savings on a high-speed Internet hookup.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
CLARK HOWARD, CONSUMER ADVOCATE: Karl is with us from Portland, Maine this morning. And you want to upgrade to high-speed Internet. You want to know how to do that in a smart way.
Well, high-speed Internet is incredibly expensive in the United States. I think the highest rates in the Western world for high-speed Internet. Our prices have stubbornly hung out around 50 bucks a month. The great news, though, more and more companies are experimenting with lower rates. Particularly the phone companies have been experimenting with Internet offerings at $29 to $34 a month. The big thing for you to do is keep asking.
And depending on what you need your high-speed Internet connection to do, one alternative is to go with what's referred to as high-speed light. What that means is that you don't have the capacity to do huge music downloads. You don't want one of those subpoenas anyway. You can get high-speed Internet that's not quite as high sped and get a big discount on your price. So think about that as an alternative as you talk to the cable company and your phone company.
One other neat thing, there is one company that if you have any neighbors nearby, especially if you live in an apartment complex or condo, you are allowed going (ph) legally to share your Internet connection and share the cost of the service. This is a wonderful thing that you should check out. It is SpeakEasy.net and they will tell you right there, you are free to share that connection each and every day and then you will save a fortune. They are not everywhere in the country yet, but they are spreading like wildfire.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
COSTELLO: Good advice there. Clark will be back next Friday with more 'Dollars & Deals.' And you can e-mail us your consumer questions. Just visit our Web site, CNN.com/DAYBREAK. In the meantime, you can get Clark's money-saving tips on the Web. The address there, ClarkHoward.com.
