FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: We'll know the top Academy Award nominees when they're announced two and a half hours from now. Even though the blockbusters are getting loads of hype, one small film may sneak off with a bunch of nominations.
Here's CNN's Daryn Kagan.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM "LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING")
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The board is set, the pieces are moving.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
DARYN KAGAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Fresh off its Golden Globe win for best drama, the final chapter in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy is THE bet for best picture honors.
TOM O'NEIL, WWW.GOLDDERBY.COM: "The Lord of the Ring's" victories for best director and best picture at the Globes gives Oscar voters permission to do what Hollywood never does, which is reward a fantasy film.
KAGAN: Academy voters will have plenty of big pictures to choose from and not all the possibilities are epic sized.
O'NEIL: Winning all those Globes positions "Lost In Translation" as the indy arty darling of the year, probably that little David movie that's going to take on the Goliaths.
KAGAN: It could be a battle between the haves and the have nots in the best actress category. A trio of past winners may be matched against hopefuls such as Naomi Watts and Charlize Theron, who was glowing after her best actress win at the Golden Globes on Sunday night. CHARLIZE THERON, ACTRESS: I've been very blessed and fortunate.
KAGAN: Oscar winner Russell Crowe could be among a sea of familiar faces for best actor, along with some possible surprises, including funny man Bill Murray, whose role in "Lost In Translation" landed him his first Golden Globe win.
O'NEIL: Standup comedians don't do well in the serious thespian community of Hollywood. But he's got a cool factor going for him and he's in a movie that critics love. (END VIDEOTAPE)
WHITFIELD: That was Daryn Kagan.
CNN's AMERICAN MORNING will have live coverage of the Oscar nominations announcement, and that's at 8:30 a.m. East Coast time.
