CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: It seems like there have been a bunch of movie awards shows lately. But the 76th annual Academy Awards is at the top of the heap.
Our Jodi Ross has a preview of this year's earlier than usual show on Sunday.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
PETER JACKSON, BEST DIRECTOR NOMINEE: I think it would be an incredible honor.
JODI ROSS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): With 11 nominations, director Peter Jackson's epic, "The Return of the King," has more chances than any other film to win. It's the favorite for best picture.
JACKSON: It would be like one of those highlights of your career that you would never forget.
ROSS: But when it comes to the Academy Awards, nothing is certain.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: All hands on!
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ROSS: With 10 nominations of its own, "Master and Commander" could sink "The Return of the King." "Sea Biscuit," "Mystic River" and "Lost In Translation" are considered best picture long shots by some. But with 17 nominations between them, Oscar may think otherwise. BEN KINGSLEY, ACTOR: It's totally new, my fourth nomination and it's totally new. Everything time is utterly new.
ROSS: In the lead actor category, "House of Sand and Fog" star Ben Kingsley is the only one with an Oscar already to his credit. It's also the fourth time "Mystic River" leading man Sean Penn's been nominated. He just may be due for his first win.
But both will have to get by a solid trio of contenders.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM "PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN")
JOHNNY DEPP, ACTOR: I may represent. (END VIDEO CLIP)
ROSS: The swashbuckling shtick of Johnny Depp, who's hot off his Screen Actor's Guild win last weekend, Jude Law's "Cold Mountain" performance and Bill Murray with "Lost In Translation."

BILL MURRAY, ACTOR: Help!
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ROSS: This is also the fourth career nomination for 1977 Oscar winner Diane Keaton.
DIANE KEATON, ACTRESS: I'm impressed.
ROSS: But with her "Monster" performance, Screen Actor's Guild and Golden Globe win, Charlize Theron is the favorite for best actress. She competes with first time nominees Naomi Watts, Samantha Morton and Keisha Castle-Hughes, who at 13 years old is the youngest lead actress nominee in Oscar history.
When it comes to best director, it's a field with several Oscar veterans.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You get butterflies on the day of the awards. You get the most appallingly bad butterflies.
ROSS: The Academy may reward "The Lord of the Rings" helmer Peter Jackson for his monumental trilogy. Clint Eastwood's "Mystic River" could bring him his third Oscar statue. Peter Weir has his sixth chance at Oscar gold with "Master and Commander." And first time nominees Fernando Mereilles of "City of God" and "Lost In Translation" director Sophia Coppola could surprise everyone if Oscar calls their name.
Jodi Ross, CNN, New York.
