KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: CBS said "Everybody Loves Raymond" grabbed its fourth straight nomination for best series.

Big part of that show's success, though, is actor Peter Boyle, who plays Raymond's dad. He also got a nomination today for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series.

And he's on the phone with us right now.

Congratulations, Peter.

PETER BOYLE, ACTOR: Hi. Thanks, Kyra. Congratulations -- I am enjoying it, and it's a welcome surprise.

PHILLIPS: Why are you so surprised?

BOYLE: I don't know. I was involved in a medical procedure, so 48 hours ago, I went under anesthesia and had my gallbladder removed.

PHILLIPS: How are you feeling?

BOYLE: I am feeling great, but the nurse came in the night I was resting in the hospital, and said, you know, I just saw the episode where you're in hospital in the show.

PHILLIPS: How ironic.

BOYLE: So I took that as a sign. So the tradeoff is lose a body part, get an Emmy nomination.

PHILLIPS: Hey, what the heck. That's not a bad deal.

BOYLE: Not a bad deal.

PHILLIPS: That's right. You and nurse need to have a party. BOYLE: Yes. And her name was Boyle (ph).

PHILLIPS: Really? Are you related?

BOYLE: Probably. There is not that many of us. Probably somewhere.

PHILLIPS: Hey, Peter, tell us why doing this show is so much fun?

BOYLE: The cast. The people I work with. The writers. And the material. And the audience.

PHILLIPS: What about those adorable kids you get to work with. What's that like?

BOYLE: Well, they're great. And they are a lot of fun. And they have grown up as we have done the show.

PHILLIPS: Now, I understand that before you pursued a career in acting that you were a monk in the Christian Brothers order.

BOYLE: I was a Christian Brother. I was a scholastic monk in training. And I did my college work at Lasalle College. So that was roughly almost 46 years ago.

PHILLIPS: Wow. So what made you decide to switch careers?

BOYLE: I wanted to be in show business all the way.

PHILLIPS: What did the other monks say?

BOYLE: They said go for it.

PHILLIPS: I'll bet they were praying for you.

BOYLE: I think they do.

PHILLIPS: I think those prayers work.

BOYLE: I think they do.

PHILLIPS: So what are you going to do now. Now you got the word, are you going to celebrate tonight?

BOYLE: No, I'm going to take it easy because I am still recovering from my operation.

PHILLIPS: Well, I got to tell you, from Mel Brooks's "Young Frankenstein," that's where we all remember you the best. Of course, now, with this show. Do you every tell your cast members, especially young kids, about "Young Frankenstein"?

BOYLE: The little kids I don't tell about it because it is still scary for them, but they discover it eventually.

PHILLIPS: Peter Boyle, we hope you're feeling better. And congratulations, my friend.

BOYLE: Thanks a lot.

PHILLIPS: All right, take care.

BOYLE: Bye.
