MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: CNN's Daryn Kagan knows all the right people on the assignment desk here at CNN, obviously. Last year, or just a few months ago, she was on the plane with Bono, traveling all through Africa, and now we found here out in Monterey, California, reporting on the toughest of all duties: The Monterey Jazz Festival.
How do -- How do you look at yourself in the mirror when there's people like Lucia Newman there in the hurricane, doing her best to tell us the facts?

DARYN KAGAN, CNN REPORTER: Miles, are those tears I see you are crying for me?

O'BRIEN: Yes, a little jealousy. I'm not hiding it well.

KAGAN; Wipe them away.

O'BRIEN: I'm not. I'm not.

KAGAN: If you weren't jealous already, I'll make you jealous right now. It's the 45th annual Monterey Jazz Festival. Some of the greatest names in jazz have played right here on this stage. And we're not only here for the festival, we're here for the sound checks, with one of the headliners, Joshua Redman.

Great to meet you.

JOSHUA REDMAN, MUSICIAN: It's great to be here.

KAGAN: One thing that this festival is known for, for folks who might not be comfortable with it and know it is that it is a great developer of young talent. And no one knows that better than you.

This is kind of like a coming home for you.

REDMAN: It is. I -- one of my first professional gigs was here many, many years ago. I am not as young.

KAGAN: Back in the day, as we like to say home in Atlanta.

REDMAN: In '86 I played here with my high school jazz band and I've come back here at least three or four times since.

KAGAN: And you continue to develop and grow as an artist and you have a new CD out where're bringing in electronic music in for the first time with your band.

REDMAN: Yes. we're trying to funk it up, groove it up a little bit and still remain free and open.

KAGAN: Great, let's give the people at home a little taste of it.

REDMAN: Let me just introduce the band real quick.

KAGAN: Please do.

REDMAN: Sam Yahell (ph) at the Hammond B3 organ and Brian Blade at the drums.

KAGAN: Let's listen in. Joshua Redman.
