KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Hurricane Lili is blasting western Cuba, with 90 mile an hour winds and sideways rain. There are ominous warnings for some residents of Havana, where CNN bureau chief Lucia Newman filed this report by videophone.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
LUCIA NEWMAN, HAVANA BUREAU CHIEF: Well, Hurricane Lili is now pounding the same part of Cuba that got hit by Hurricane Isidore less than two weeks ago. The eye of the hurricane has already passed the Isle of Youth, and is now entering the western province of Penav Del Rio (ph), an area that's still recovering from the last hurricane, still drenched, in fact,. More than 100,000 people have been evacuated from Penav Del Rio (ph), more than 80,000 animals taken to higher ground.
Now there are also flood warnings, not only for Penan Del Rio (ph), but also for Havana province, particularly the southern coastal areas of Havana province, and as for the capital itself, authorities warn people living in old Havana and central Havana that there are dangers of building collapsing in that part of the city. These are very old and dilapidated buildings and very vulnerable to torrential rain. It is already beginning to rain very, very heavily in the capital, and this is actually the second hurricane called Lili to hit this country since 1996. The last time Lili hit here, it caused a great deal of widespread devastation. The hope is this hurricane will pass more quickly and cause less damage.
This is Lucia Newman, CNN, Havana.
