KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Well, Here are some numbers that reveal the U.S. Navy's massive commitment around the globe. More than 100 of its ships and dozen submarines are deployed on active missions at this hour. Nearly 400,000 personnel are currently on active duty, but those numbers don't reflect the complement of civilians who support those ships and crews.
Affiliate station XZTV went to San Diego's shipyard to introduce us to some of these invisible patriots.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

RICHARD NULL, RIGGER: Our job here is to build the ships, maintain the ships and repair the ships that defend our country.

My name's Richard Null. I work at Nassco and I'm a rigger.

BEN SCOTT, PROJECT MANAGER: We consider ourselves the invisible patriots here, due to the fact that no one really knows what we do.

My name is Ben Scott. I'm the project manager from Nassco.

Concern and care for the quality of work that they do makes us all invisible patriots.

NULL: I'm very patriotic.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I love the United States.

NULL: I spent 27 years in the navy and retired.

OWEN MCCALL, MACHINIST: My name is Owen McCall. I'm an outside machinist for National Steel and Shipbuilding Company and my operation is, right now, is to work on the boat deck.

I love working on ships of the United States in the military.

SCOTT: When the USS Stennis leaves, they will be the most capable, ready aircraft carrier there is.

NULL: It's always a sense of pride because you did know that you have done some work on that ship.

MCCALL: Every time I see one go by in the harbor and stuff I go, Hey, that's one I worked on.

NULL: I brag a little bit.

MCCALL: Oh, I feel great when I go home.

NULL: I've always enjoyed working with the navy, because it's a place in my heart that will always be there.
