MARTIN SAVIDGE, CNN ANCHOR: We want to move on now to another story that is developing, and that is that one of the sniper hearings has come to an end.
Patty Davis joining us from Greenbelt, Maryland.
What was said -- Patty.
PATTY DAVIS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: John Muhammad has been ordered detained by a federal magistrate judge here in federal court in Greenbelt, Maryland, that magistrate saying that Muhammad poses both a risk of flight and a danger to the community.
Now, Muhammad came into court in handcuffs, his hands behind his back. A marshal did take those handcuffs off. He was dressed in a maroon prison jump suit and throughout the proceeding looked straight ahead. He did shake hands with his public defenders but looked straight ahead. I could tell very little emotion because I was sitting behind him. But he would lean over every once in awhile and talk to his attorneys. But didn't seem to be looking at the attorneys as they were talking to the judge and presenting their case.
The judge also set a November 8th preliminary hearing, this coming Friday, in this case, on these federal charges.
Now, Muhammad was charged last week, a 20 count federal criminal complaint associated with this sniper killing spree in the Washington, D.C. area. They're alleging extortion. They're also alleging use of a firearm in connection with a violent act causing someone's death. Those charges could bring the death penalty for Muhammad.
Now prosecutors have until Thursday to indict him. That is because they have a ten-day clock from when they brought that criminal complaint. Also, Attorney General Ashcroft today meeting to review evidence in this case, and we are told that the attorney general will decide, is likely at least, to decide which jurisdiction will try this case first, Virginia, perhaps, Maryland, even the federal government -- Martin.
SAVIDGE: Patty Davis live from Greenbelt, Maryland. The hearing just concluded for John Muhammad.
