KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: If the new year brings a war with Iraq, U.S. servicemen and women stationed in Kuwait's Camp New York have front row seats, but today, they participated in a different kind of military exercise.
CNN's Ryan Chilcote live in Kuwait with the details of the festivities on the front lines.

Wow, Ryan, I don't think we should talk, we should just listen to this.

RYAN CHILCOTE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes, with no further ado, this is Dawn Pey (ph), and she's going to cover Dru Hill's song "Angel."

(SINGING)

PHILLIPS: Wow.

Ryan, tell us about this talent show. I mean, obviously, a way to boost up morale around the holidays while you're overseas thinking about a war against Iraq. I mean, this really -- it moves the morale, doesn't it?

CHILCOTE: Reporter: I haven't seen this kind of energy ever in my life under one tent, I should say. We're at the third infantry division's talent show, and she's following up on some gospel rap. We had an acoustic guitar performance and even some merengue dancing out there. And I'll tell you, the troops are really excited about this. They're all battling over four gift certificates at the Army store on base. They've got $100 bucks on the line, and they're taking this very seriously.

Just after this, they'll have a bonfire. It's 9:30 here, so we're two 1/2 hours away from midnight, but the troops there, they're pretty psyched about this.

PHILLIPS: We are going to listen to a little bit more, Ryan, but before we go, do you have any idea what this young lady does when she's on the front line, when she's in uniform?

CHILCOTE: Let me take a look here. I, unfortunately, I can't tell you what she does. I know she's here with the third infantry, second brigade. Just to give you an idea of her day, she's out here in the tents every night. We're about 10 kilometers, maybe six miles from the border with Iraq, and this is probably the best fun she's had in a while out here. PHILLIPS: She's got a beautiful voice. Ryan Chilcote, bringing us a little different taste of what preparing for war can be like there in the front lines in Kuwait City.
