KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Where was Laci Peterson's husband the day she disappeared? He says he was fishing. The Modesto, California, police are calling on the public to help verify that.
Ed Lavandera tells us how the investigation is shaping up.

Hi, Ed.

ED LAVANDERA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Kyra.

Well, an interesting turn as, police here in Modesto have released pictures of the pickup truck and the boat that Scott Peterson says he was using the day that his wife, Laci Peterson, disappeared on December 24th. The pictures are of a 2002 Ford F-150 pickup truck, bronze colored, and that truck was pulling a 14-foot aluminum boat with a small outboard motor on the back end of it. And he has told police that that morning of December 24th, about 9:30, he left to go fishing at the Berkeley Marina, which is about 85 miles northwest of Modesto.

But now, the police here are asking people to take a close look at these pictures, and they want to know if anyone in this area has seen Scott Peterson driving the truck and the boat between December 23rd and December 25th. They want to put together corroborating information to see whether or not they can clear Scott Peterson from being a possible suspect in this case.

We asked him -- we've asked police if Scott Peterson is cooperating with authorities at this point, and they would say that he is cooperating, but only to a certain degree, to use the police department's words here. '

Family members, his parents, say they have nothing to worry about. They don't believe he was involved in Laci Peterson's disappearance. Laci's mother all says the exact same thing. His parents told me yesterday that he has not hired an attorney because he has no reason to defend himself. So Laci Peterson's mother yesterday, once again, urging people to continue looking for her daughter, and holding out all hope that she is still alive.

SHARON ROCHA, LACI PETERSON'S MOTHER: I would hope that you would have some compassion in your heart that if this was your daughter, or your sister or your mother, would you want them to live in the fear and terror that my daughter has been living in? And if it was your mother, or your sister or your daughter, would you want them to have the heartache or the pain that we have been going through? Please bring our daughter home.

LAVANDERA: Just a little while ago I had a chance to speak with the police chief here in Modesto. and he says since those pictures were released yesterday of the truck and boat, they've had more than 300 phone calls, tips coming in to authorities, so they're still weeding through all of the information, to see if that might help them out in piecing together the timeline, that authorities say they want to be able to dismiss Scott Peterson as a possible suspect in this case.

Also, the authorities here continue to search. There are crews throughout the area. They've also dispatched other dive teams to area lakes and rivers throughout the area on the request of the police department here, to continue in that search as well -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: All right, Ed Lavandera, thank you.
