KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: We begin now with a possible break in what's been frustrating and seemingly futile search for a pregnant California woman.
CNN's Rusty Dornin joins us live now from Modesto with the latest on the Laci Peterson investigation -- Rusty.

RUSTY DORNIN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Kyra, this morning I spoke with two sources close to the Laci Peterson family who have confirmed that the Modesto Police paid a visit to the Peterson -- or to her family, her mother and brother and sister on Wednesday night, and did show them pictures of Scott Peterson with another woman with whom he was allegedly having an affair, and that he had also taken out a $250,000 life insurance policy.

Now one of those sources did tell me also that one of the pictures was dated in mid-December, when they knew, in fact, that Laci Peterson thought her husband was out on a business meeting, and that was the date of one of those photos.

Now, of course, people here close to the family are devastated by this news because it doesn't necessarily say that Scott Peterson had something to do with his wife's disappearance, but they feel very betrayed by this new evidence.

In fact, the volunteer center here in Modesto has completely shut down, and the volunteer -- some of the volunteers I spoke to said that they couldn't face the possibility of even running into Scott Peterson.

Now, we're here at the Modesto Police Department where they are refusing to do any interviews this morning. They say they will not have another press conference until there is a breakthrough in this case. They will not confirm nor deny that they paid a visit to the family to show those pictures.

Now, also in Los Angeles this weekend, Scott Peterson was scheduled to go down to open a Laci Peterson volunteer center there in Los Angeles, and I just spoke to the gentleman, the manager of the hotel here in Modesto who was also helping to sponsor the opening of that volunteer center. And apparently those plans, we are unsure whether that center is going to open or not. The Peterson family has not announced their decision yet.

Meantime, Scott Peterson did speak to a Sacramento affiliate, a television station, and he said that it doesn't matter how much he is vilified, that he will -- that it has nothing to do with him, that he still wants to find Laci -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: All right. Rusty Dornin, we'll check in with you again next hour.
