KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: We begin this hour with some unsavory and still unconfirmed accusations arising from the mystery in Modesto, the disappearance of Laci Peterson.
CNN's Rusty Dornin live from Modesto now with the latest -- Rusty.

RUSTY DORNIN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Kyra, I spoke this morning with sources close to Lady -- Laci Peterson's family, and they did confirm that the Modesto Police Department went over to their house on Wednesday night and showed pictures of Scott Peterson and a woman with whom he was allegedly having an affair. Also that Scott Peterson had taken out a $250,000 life insurance policy on his wife.

Now, one of those pictures, apparently, was dated in mid-December and was on a night when Laci Peterson had thought her husband was out on a business appointment. Now, close family friends saying even if Scott Peterson is not connected with the disappearance his wife, they feel betrayed. Volunteers at the center say they feel similar, and even one from the Modesto Police Department who is a chaplain.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

DON CROOKER, MODESTO POLICE CHAPLAINS: Devastated. Unbelievable. And, you know, believe me, chaplains cry.

DORNIN (on camera): You were in that volunteer center almost every day.

CROOKER: Yes, I was.

DORNIN: You saw Scott Peterson every day in there.

CROOKER: Yes. And we had high hopes, and we can't give up all hope yet, but it's devastating to see what we've seen and hear what we've heard.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

DORNIN: Now, that volunteer center has closed down here in Modesto, and some of the volunteers did tell me they had no desire to see Scott Peterson in that center.

Meantime, he has been scheduled for a press conference in Los Angeles at about 11:30 Pacific to announce the opening of a center this weekend for Laci Peterson in Los Angeles. Apparently -- we have not heard whether those plans are on hold. The Peterson family is still making up their minds whether they are going to open that center or not.

Now, meantime, the police department here in Modesto, the only thing they've done is issue an advisory here where they say they will not confirm or deny any of this, that they will not respond to any rumors or speculation, and there are no press conferences planned until there is some kind of a break-through in this case.

Meantime, Scott Peterson gave the very first press interviews he has during the last three weeks. He did speak to some television stations from Sacramento. He said that he does not mind being vilified in the press, if it gets Laci Peterson's picture and name out there -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: Live from Modesto, Rusty Dornin. Thank you.
