Scott Peterson Breaks Silence

KYRA PHILLIPS, Some answers, some new questions in the search for Laci Peterson. Her husband breaks the silence, answering questions about an affair, and denying any part in his pregnant wife's disappearance.
CNN's David Mattingly live in Modesto now -- David.

DAVID MATTINGLY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Kyra.

Scott Peterson offering up a couple surprises today about his affair and his marriage. First of all, he says, on the night that Laci Peterson disappeared, that Christmas Eve, he talked to investigators and admitted he did have an affair with the 28-year-old Amber Frye (ph). He also said that he told his wife about the affair in early December. This would have been at a time when Laci was eight-months pregnant, and the affair was going on, according to Amber, for a couple weeks.

When asked on "Good Morning, America" about Laci's reaction the affair and what affect it may have had on their marriage, here's what he had to say.

SCOTT PETERSON, HUSBAND OF LACI: I told my wife in early December.

QUESTION: Did it cause a rupture in the marriage?

PETERSON: It was not a positive, obviously, you know, inappropriate. But it was not something that we weren't dealing with.

QUESTION: A lot of arguing?

PETERSON: No.

MATTINGLY: Scott went on to say this is not something that would have broken up their marriage. Laci's family today reacting through a family spokesperson, saying that they would like for Scott to come down here and talk to the Modesto Police instead of talking to the media. The Modesto Police, Kyra, very interested in that interview this morning.

PHILLIPS: And, David, why is he stepping forward now? Why now does he decide to talk? MATTINGLY: I had a chance to talk to him very briefly yesterday, and he today me that felt there was too much attention on him, and he wants more of the attention back on finding Amber (sic).

And in that interview today, he did get a little emotional when he was talking about the possibility that she might be no longer be alive at this point. He says that's not a possibility that he's willing to accept right now.
