JUDY WOODRUFF, CNN ANCHOR: For right now, though, we want to go down and talk to our correspondent Harris Whitbeck, who is at a forward air base in southeastern Iraq a coalition -- where coalition forces are. Harris, tell us what is going on where you are.
HARRIS WHITBECK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Judy, a couple of airmen walked over to our videophone here and were able to watch the return signal from CNN domestic, watch those pictures of Saddam Hussein walking the streets of Baghdad. They expressed surprise and were pretty incredulous. They said it was unbelievable that after the pounding that Baghdad has gotten in the last few days that Saddam Hussein would be seen on the streets here.

A lot of the action over Baghdad has been supported from this base, which is in southern Iraq, A-10 Warthog airplanes have intensify thread activity here running combat missions and running missions to support the ground troops that are fighting around the airport and the outskirts of Baghdad.

Also tonight, as you know, there has been an alert issued on this base. It's been going on for several days now on the possibility of a chemical attack as those troops get closer to Baghdad and as they start trying to wrest control of the city from Saddam Hussein's forces...

WOODRUFF: Harris Whitbeck...

WHITBECK: ... could increase not only on troops that are -- go ahead, Judy.

WOODRUFF: Go ahead, Harris.

WHITBECK: No, I was saying, as the troops around Baghdad get closer the possibility of chemical attack increases. Not only there but also at this bases which is considered to be extremely strategic to the coalition's interest. The Army has set up a decontamination center here. And a lot of these airmen are you know walking around wearing their chemical suits, at least wearing the pants to those chemical suit ready to put on their mask and everything else if it became necessary -- Judy.

WOODRUFF: Harris Whitbeck, we're going to come back to you later. TO ORDER A VIDEO OF THIS TRANSCRIPT, PLEASE CALL 800-CNN-NEWS OR USE OUR SECURE ONLINE ORDER FORM LOCATED AT www.fdch.com
