MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Police want to know if there's more evidence in the Laci Peterson case sitting at the bottom of San Francisco Bay. Divers are back searching there today. CNN's Rusty Dornin is covering the search. She joins us now live from Richmond, California.
Rusty, any way to tell from where you're standing if they found anything?
RUSTY DORNIN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, we did see something a little earlier, which we'll show you in just a minute. But divers did jump in about 7:00 a.m. this morning. They're using two side-scanning sonar devices to aid in their search, but the divers, when they go in, are basically just feeling along the bottom of the bay, hand over hand, to see what they can find.
Now, while it looks like it is out in the middle of the bay, actually, it is only about eight feet deep out there, which makes it a lot easier on the divers.
About two and a half hours ago, they did pull up something, looked like could be a piece of clothing, a piece of tarp. We're not sure exactly what it is. It was black. They pulled it up into the back of the boat, took a closer look at it, and then took it to the back of the boat and put it in a bag. We're assuming that it's in some kind of an evidence bag so they can take a closer look at it at a later time.
Meantime, we understand that attorney Gloria Allred, who will be having a press conference in about 25 minutes in Los Angeles, will be announcing that she will be representing Amber Frey.
Now, if you remember, Amber Frey was the young woman who came forth in January and said that she had had an affair with Scott Peterson in November and December. We spoke with Gloria Allred last week, and while she wouldn't say that she was going to represent Frey, she did say sometimes in cases like this, where a witness has been involved with a suspect, the witness needs some help because the defense often slams them.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
GLORIA ALLRED, ATTORNEY: I think that key witnesses in high profile criminal cases would benefit from having private attorneys advise them to know their own rights, and to help them interact with the public dialogue that is occurring about them.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
DORNIN: Now, Amber Frey is also expected to make a statement at that press conference. And back on the bay, they've been usually working through the mid-afternoon. The wind comes up, it gets a little too choppy, but they are saying that many of the sheriff's departments around these counties here are saying they are committed at least through Friday and Saturday in this search -- Miles.
O'BRIEN: CNN's Rusty Dornin in Richmond, California.
