MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Well, rain or shine -- and unfortunately it has been rain -- it is Fleet Week in New York City, which means a flotilla of U.S. warships has steamed in to the harbor there and it's an opportunity for people to take a look at these amazing machines up close and personal.
At the center of all this is a floating museum for naval aviation and naval warfare in general, the USS Intrepid, and onboard we find CNN's Jason Carroll telling us about how they are celebrating this Memorial Day -- Jason.
JASON CARROLL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: And good afternoon to you, Miles.
Somewhat of a bittersweet day. The organizers for Fleet Week want people to come out and celebrate and meet the people who serve on all of the ships that sailed in for this event. But obviously, also, a day to honor the men and women who gave their lives for this country.
Earlier this afternoon there was a ceremony onboard the USS Intrepid. Wreaths were tossed into the water to symbolize and honor those who gave their lives. Also a 50-foot long flag was unfurled onboard the USS Intrepid while "Taps" played in the background. Finally, there was a prayer.
In attendance, Stacy Stamis (ph) on and Dionne Ford (ph). Both of these women -- their husbands served in the Iraqi war. Both of those men died when their Cobra helicopter was shot down.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It reminds me that there's a price for freedom. Freedom is not free and our husbands paid the ultimate price.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It's a special day because it's the first since our husbands perished a few weeks ago and it's a special occasion for us to be together here with the people who are celebrating America's heroes so we can enjoy the freedom we enjoy every day. (END VIDEO CLIP)
CARROLL: Our sympathies go out to their families.
Fleet Week is scheduled to close out tomorrow. Earlier one of the organizers said that he was praying that the weather would clear up. It's been raining all weekend long. Looks like at least for now, their prayers have been answered -- Miles.
O'BRIEN: Then what?
All right. Thank you very much. CNN's Jason Carroll, who is live in New York City where people are having a somber reflection on what has happened in this most recent war as well as wars past.
