Couple Defends Home From Intruder

HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: If you're an intruder, there's one house in Minneapolis you definitely want to avoid. Caroline Lowe of WCCO reports on the capture of a man who told home owner Russell Couse (ph) a story Couse (ph) just couldn't buy.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Someone was chasing him with a knife in the backyard.

CAROLINE LOWE, WCCO CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Russell Couse (ph) didn't buy his story.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I yelled in a really loud voice to him, you're under arrest.

LOWE: Couse (ph) grabbed the intruder and the struggle moved to the kitchen. Couse (ph) yelled at his wife to call 911. She then jumped in to help her husband.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It was all quick and confusing. I didn't think about anything.

LOWE: She hit the man with a bronze art piece, and then accidentally also hit her husband.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I said, tie him up.

LOWE: Blood was all over their kitchen.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: (UNINTELLIGIBLE) his legs, and then everybody fell on the floor.

LOWE: Mrs. Couse (ph) called 911 three times for help.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Then I would grab his legs again and we would go down on the floor. And I called 911, and Russell just had him -- you had him in a giant bear hug that you -- like the jaws of death -- or life. You weren't going to let him go, and he was kind of dragging you around and banging, pounding at you.

LOWE: She screamed at the intruder while she kicked.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I started to try to kick him in the groin, and yelling at him, I am going to kill you if you don't stop this.

LOWE: She grabbed a rope and a silk scarf to tie him up, and then they sat on the intruder until police arrived.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Then we were very relieved.
