KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: A number of developments coming out of the Scott Peterson hearing today. Now we're told another update, Rusty Dornin live from Modesto with the latest from there -- Rusty.
RUSTY DORNIN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes Kyra, we have just received some papers from the district attorney's office where the D.A. is asking that cameras be barred from the courtroom. Officially, they had not adopted an official position. This is it. They say that the media has no right to have cameras in the courtroom. That witnesses that come before the court should not be subjected to the media circus, the intense media attention, that a case like this will generate.

But probably the biggest impact in this case is a letter that is written by Sharon Rocha to the court, asking them to please bar cameras from the courtroom. We read from this letter. We know the trial is going to be a very personal matter. It will be extremely difficult for everyone, her family, her friends, her students who know and love Laci, to hear and see the evidence and personal facts of her life and death, that will be revealed inside the courtroom.

She goes on to say, the trial in addition to all that we have already been forced to endure is going to be excruciatingly painful. There are many children in this city that met Laci as she was their substitute teacher. Many of these children have been severely affected to what has happened to Laci and Connor. Some of them are afraid. Some are extremely sad.

So this could obviously have powerful influence on the court. It will not be taken up, however. They did decide to talk about cameras in the courtroom for the preliminary hearing on August 14. But this could be pretty powerful evidence -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: Rusty Dornin, live from Modesto. Thank you.
