KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: In Iraq, two U.S. soldiers and their Humvee are still missing but three suspects in the disappearance have been questioned. Meanwhile, another American is dead, shot from behind while patrolling a street in northern Baghdad.
CNN's Baghdad bureau chief Jane Arraf has more.

JANE ARRAF, CNN BAGHDAD BUREAU CHIEF: It's the latest in a series of what appears to be escalating attacks in and around Baghdad. In this one, eyewitnesses in the neighborhood of Kadamia (ph), an important Shi'ia neighborhood, with one of the holiest shrines for Shi'ia Muslims in the world, tell us that an American soldier was shot at close range in the back of the head as he was on a routine patrol.

Now this was in a main street in the neighborhood, on this holy Friday and just before prayers. Apparently the patrol stopped to look at CDs and DVDs at a stall -- someone crept up behind them and shot him at very close range.

No official comment from the military but military sources describe that version of events described by eyewitnesses as credible.

At the same time, they're still searching for two American soldiers and their armored vehicle who disappeared from radio contact more than a day and a half ago. There's been intensive searches launched with helicopters and on the ground but so far no apparent sign of the soldiers.

Officials though say that they have three suspects in custody, they're interrogating them to try to find out what might have happened to those soldiers.

Jane Arraf, CNN, reporting from Baghdad.
