KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: A bit earlier in the newscast, we told you a bit of a scare in LaGuardia Airport in New York. Authorities were evacuating a rental car agency while they looked at a suspicious vehicle.
On the phone with us now, Ray Kelly, New York City police commissioner.

Sir, can you just give us an update? I understand this was not terrorism related.

RAY KELLY, NYPD COMMISSIONER: No, it's not terrorism related. It was a rental car that was overdue. It had several summons on it. The rental company went to pick it up, they brought it back to their facility. They opened the trunk. In the trunk, they found a Tec-9 semiautomatic weapon, fully loaded. Next to that was a series of road flares with a clock attached to it, apparently made to look like some sort of explosive device. However, it was not an explosive device, that's been determined by the bomb squad. Additional checks are being done on the vehicle now.

PHILLIPS: What about the individual that was driving the car? What's the latest on that?

KELLY: Right. Well, that's of course the subject of an investigation. We think we know who it is, and we're attempting to locate him.

PHILLIPS: And, sir, as the Fourth of July weekend is just right around the corner, can you just give us a feel, and even New Yorkers a feel, for how you are going to react to situations like this in a -- basically a new New York now.

KELLY: Well, you're right, it is a new New York, post-9/11. We have a lot of additional officers assigned throughout the city, certainly for July 4th weekend. We have a major fireworks display tomorrow night in the East River. So we'll have lots of uniform and nonuniform officers deployed throughout the city. We'll have our boats on the water, our helicopters in the air. I think people should feel very secure in New York City in the next -- certainly the next weekend. I think we're in very good shape.

PHILLIPS: New York City police commissioner Ray Kelly. Thank you, sir.
