KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: His lawyer says Vincent Brothers is headed back to California. Brothers is the grades-school vice principal who surfaced in North Carolina after five members of his family were found stabbed and shot to death in Bakersfield.
It's a complex case, and CNN's Miguel Marquez is live in Bakersfield with the latest on that -- Miguel.

MIGUEL MARQUEZ, CNN CORRESPONDENT: How are you there, Kyra? That's exactly right. His lawyer says he is coming back as a grieving father, a grieving husband and as a grieving son-in-law.

We have some pictures shot just a short time ago. It appears that Mr. Brothers may in fact, be on his way back to Bakersfield, California. These pictures coming from affiliate out of Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Vincent Brothers boarding a plane there.

We're also learning more about this case from a search warrant affidavit that was -- we got ahold of today. And this kind of tells us why police suspected him in the first place. It places Brother at Los Angeles International Airport on Thursday, July 2. It says the last time Brothers' wife, stepmother and three children were seen was on Sunday, July 6, at church.

Four days later, that morning, they were found by a friend on Tuesday, July 8, dead in their Bakersfield home. And Brothers turned himself in to Elizabeth City, North Carolina later that day on Tuesday. His mother lives in North Carolina. What police cannot account for, though, is where Brothers was between Thursday, July 2, and that following Tuesday when the bodies were found.

Now, the supervising deputy coroner in Bakersfield says that they've not yet determined the time of death of those five family members. Obviously, that is going to be a fairly important fact in this case. He also says the Bakersfield Police have issued a gag order forbidding the coroner from giving out any further information about this case.

I did get one more thing from him that their own internal report will probably be ready in about a week, week and a half. So even if they had information, they wouldn't be able release it till then.

The other thing that Mr. Brothers' lawyer saying today was that Mr. Brothers will come back to Bakersfield as this grieving husband, father and stepson, but also to bury his family -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: Miguel Marquez live from Bakersfield, thank you.
