KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: For more reason today for U.S. military families too worry about their loved ones in Iraq, another convoy attacked and another U.S. soldier killed. We're awaiting a live Pentagon briefing this hour. We'll bring that to you as soon as that takes place.
Now, for more from Baghdad, our Nic Robertson live with details on those stories we were just talking about -- Nic.

NIC ROBERTSON, CNN SENIOR INTERNATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Kyra, that convoy of 20 vehicles driving west of Baghdad along a major highway. This morning at about 9:00, an explosive device went off on the side of the holiday. One soldier killed, three were wounded.

A little bit later in the day, another soldier was wounded in the center of Baghdad. He was sitting in his Humvee. A grenade was tossed into the Humvee. He was injured. A young Iraqi child nearby was killed. The four Iraqis also standing close by were injured as well in that particular incident.

At Baghdad International Airport two soldiers injured there when an explosive device believed to be a mine went off. It's not clear if this mine was an old mine belonging to the former regime that had been lying around for some or if it had been put recently in the path of these two particular soldiers.

And some bad news for the coalition as well today -- one, the mayor of had Hadithah (ph), a town about 160 miles northwest of Baghdad, was shot dead as he was driving through the town. It's not clear why the mayor was shot dead but with many cities and towns around Iraq, the coalition has been putting forward mayors, putting forward governors. And according to local news media here, the mayor of Hadithah who was shot dead, was a pro-American, had been working with U.S. forces.

And there's been an undercurrent here, Iraqi people tell us, an undercurrent from former Ba'athist elements, they believe, to stop people, to intimidate Iraqis not to work with U.S. forces, not to work with the coalition -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: Our Nic Robertson with the latest from Baghdad. Thanks, Nic.
