KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Well, Tiger Woods is having some trouble at the British Open. He opened play today with a triple bogey and, for you non-golfers, believe me, that's not a good thing.
CNN's Patrick Snell live from Sandwich, England, with more on Tiger's play and some of the other leaders, a few surprises too.

Hi, Patrick.

PATRICK SNELL, CNN SPORTS CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Kyra.

Indeed, it certainly was a very surprising day. At the end of day one, we're contemplating the fact that Tiger Woods lost his drive on the very first hole here.

Remember, he's the world number one and many people expect him to win this and he put it in the very heavy rough. It got downtrodden. It wasn't found which is surprising in itself at a major. He went back. He played three off the tee and he wound up with a seven, as you say, a triple bogey.

Now, he did recover of sorts. He got his round back on track and he finished on two over par. That was with a 73. But, he's playing catch up with the Australian Greg Norman, a man known affectionately as the Great White Shark. He had a very impressive round.

Remember, he won here ten years ago. That was his last major and Norman shot a 69 and that's two under par. He is five shots clear of Tiger Woods but, of course, you can never write Woods off.

Now, who else is out there? Well, the American Davis Love III, he is two under, but the tournament leader, the South African, the little known South African Hennie Otto on three under par -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: Patrick, I was just even asking the producer there that picture of Greg Norman from today, I bring this up again. You know we were all talking about this. He looks amazing and he's playing so well and, you know, this is a guy that hasn't won, you know, a major in quite a long time. Has he mentioned anything about he's just -- he just -- I don't know. He surprised us. He really did from look to play to all around.

SNELL: You know Norman now is 48. His last major, as I say, was here on this very course. It was a decade ago back in 1993 and he's had a pretty miserable time over recent years with injuries. He's had shoulder problems. He's had surgery. He's had problems with his back.

He's only played two tournaments in 2003. This is only his third tournament. It's a remarkable achievement and, afterwards, he told us that he's feeling good and he believes, Kyra that he can win another major.

PHILLIPS: It definitely wouldn't surprise us, any of us. Patrick Snell live from England thank you so much. We'll continue to follow the tournament.
