KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Police have searched Russell Weller's home. They're looking for any medications that might have affected the 86-year-old man. Police could bring charges after he drove his Buick through a California street market at about this time yesterday.
Miguel Marquez now with the latest developments -- Miguel.
MIGUEL MARQUEZ, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes, we're about 24 hours since this just awful, awful crash happening out here in Santa Monica. I'm sure that the victims, their family and probably Mr. Weller, the person who apparently is responsible, feels like life will never go on. But I can tell on you Arizona Avenue here, where the farmers' market was, it's back to normal, as normal as it's going to get for a little while. The sidewalks open, traffic is flowing again, and police are still continuing their investigation.
They're looking at their two main theories on this case. Did Mr. Weller, that 86-year-old man, have a diminished capacity to drive, or was there mechanical failure with his car? We can tell you CNN has learned that in November 2000, Mr. Weller had his license renewed. He passed both written and vision tests in person at the DMV here in California. He does have a valid driver's license with no restrictions. Police are now talking to over 100 witnesses, gathering physical evidence at the scene.
They also searched Mr. Weller's house last night. Mr. Weller's attorney called this an unintentional and unfortunate accident. That will be up to the D.A. to decide, the chief of police here in Santa Monica saying early this morning that it will take him about two to three weeks to synthesize all of that testimony from those witnesses and all that physical evidence. He'll turn it over to the D.A., and then charges may be possible -- charges of manslaughter -- Kyra.
PHILLIPS: Miguel Marquez, live from Santa Monica, thank you.
