KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Now three boys out for a summertime spin wind up as local heroes in Modesto, California. It's a great story. Reporter Suzanne Phan from our affiliate KCRA with that story and some quick-thinking kids and the woman they rescued.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
SUZANNE PHAN, KCRA CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Every day Victor Ruiz (ph), Michael Martinez (ph) and Christian Vega (ph) take to the streets on their bikes.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We were just riding around, doing wheelies, jumping over curbs.
PHAN: But then....
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: So my friend Michael just heard the lady screaming, "Help! Help!"
PHAN: Flames trapped 67-year-old Frances Martinez (ph) in her kitchen, where she had been warming up some soup on the stove. Her husband usually helps her because she is blind, but that day he had to run an errand.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Because I'm blind and I can't see, so, you know, I didn't realize that I had turned the wrong burner on.
PHAN: The kids happened to be in the right place at the right time. They dropped their bikes and ran to help Martinez, who was caught in the doorway.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I took her because she was blind and I turned on the water hose and Victor just squirted it at the fire.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And the screen was on my way so I went like that and broke it.
PHAN: As Martinez waited safely across the street, Victor managed to put the fire out before firefighters arrived.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: They very much so diverted a disaster. It could have gotten a lot worse if they wouldn't have acted.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: They did a good job. We're really proud of him, the whole family is.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Anything could have happened to me.
PHAN: Victor, Michael and Christian were all happy to help.
Martinez has a special message for the boys.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Thank you very much for hearing me, for just listening, because usually kids don't pay attention, you know. And these three kids, they did.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
PHILLIPS: Oh, Victor, Michael and Christian, we're proud of you, too. Reporter Suzanne Phan from our affiliate KCRA in Modesto, California, thank you so much for that story.
