MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Kobe Bryant's trial on sexual assault charges hasn't started yet, but friends of his accuser are already speaking out on her behalf. One of them told NBC the woman felt sick to her stomach when she heard Bryant deny the charges in a televised statement. Another friend tells an Orange County newspaper the woman took an overdose of pills in May as a cry for help. But at least one friend says she doesn't consider her unstable now.
Our Brian Cabell is in Eagle, Colorado, with more and on the case and the prosecutor who will try it.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

BRIAN CABELL, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): It is quiet here today in Eagle and likely will be relatively quiet for the next three weeks. Kobe Bryant doesn't appear here until August 6. That's when he'll be informed of his rights and also of the charge against him.

He appeared on Friday with his wife and with his attorneys. His attorneys are high-powered, big-money attorneys from Denver. And the question that's been raised in Eagle here a number of times is, can a small-town DA with limited resources match the resources and experience of this big-powered firm out of Denver. He thinks he can.

MARK HURLBERT, EAGLE COUNTY, COLORADO DISTRICT ATTORNEY: Certainly, when dealing with someone of Mr. Bryant's celebrity, there are a lot of difficulties in a case. But I'm -- right now, I'm evaluating as to what sort of other resources we are going to need in this case.

CABELL: Another issue that has come to light here today deals with the young woman herself, the 19-year-old accuser. Apparently, somebody has put out a Web site on her that has her name, her address, her phone number, and some photographs. It's not known who has done this. The district attorney has asked that everybody please respect her privacy, but, clearly, that is not being done.

I'm Brian Cabell, CNN, in Eagle, Colorado.
