KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Now new developments once again coming out of the Pentagon. We are told new pictures of Saddam Hussein being distributed to soldiers on the ground in Iraq. Chris Plante now with more. Chris, what's the deal?
CHRIS PLANTE, CNN PENTAGON CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Kyra. The Pentagon has produced six photos of Saddam Hussein that they have altered to create new appearances for Saddam.
They have produced these in a computer essentially based on old photographs of Saddam adding a beard, taking away a mustache, turning his hair gray, adding a hat, sunglasses, that sort of thing, changing his appearance in a variety of ways that Saddam himself may have done since the fall of his regime.
And as we saw when his sons Uday and Qusay Hussein were killed in that shootout in Mosul they had significantly changed their appearances, growing long beards, Uday shaving his head.
And they are guessing at this point that Saddam may very well have done the same thing. And if he is moving from place to place, as we have been reporting with great regularity, perhaps, as often as every two to four hours, according to some sources that Jamie McIntyre spoke to while in Iraq a couple of days ago, they're concerned that he may be able to move from place to place and perhaps even go through U.S. checkpoints unnoticed because his appearance has been changed so radically.
So the point here is to get new effectively wanted posters out on the street to troops, not just to special operations forces that may be hunting him, but also to troops that may be manning checkpoints so they can keep in mind that his appearance may have been altered significantly, that he may be traveling in a single vehicle and not a convoy. And this will give them some idea of what they may be looking for -- Kyra.
PHILLIPS: All right, Chris Plante. One step closer. Thank you.
