KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: We begin the full-court press by the media in the Kobe Bryant case. A hearing is underway in Eagle, Colorado. Judge Frederick Gannett will decide whether to give news organizations access to sealed records in the sexual assault case. CNN's Josie Burke is keeping track of developments from the Colorado mountain town. Josie, tell us about those records.
JOSIE BURKE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Kyra, the very first thing that Judge Frederick Gannett did when he opened the hearing today is lay out what he thought were the crucial issues or the crucial issue in this argument over whether to unseal the court file in the Kobe Bryant sexual assault case. And he said, as he sees it, it is a First Amendment, Sixth Amendment battle. The First Amendment being the public's right to know and the Sixth Amendment being the right to a fair trial.
He spent the first 15 minutes of this hearing addressing the lawyers and the media. Presently, we can show you a live picture of courtroom Number One where the media lawyers currently addressing the bench. The judge also laid out his timetable or at least a better idea of what a timetable could be for ruling on this.
Again, the media says they want to unseal the court file. The defense and the prosecution united say they want to keep this court file sealed. The judge said there's no way he's going to make a ruling today and it is very unlikely that he'll have a ruling by the time the court convenes again on this case, and that's six days from now when Kobe Bryant is expected to appear before the court and hear the charges that are pending against him.
Again, the judge saying there's a good chance he won't even know by then what his decision is on this matter -- Kyra.
PHILLIPS: All right, Josie Burke, thank you.
