KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Now news coming out of the Pentagon. We told you about this story. Pictures, new pictures being handed out to troops on the ground in Iraq in search of Saddam Hussein. Barbara Starr with more information now about this operation -- Barbara.
BARBARA STARR, CNN PENTAGON CORRESPONDENT: Well, Kyra, the hunt for Saddam is taking a bit of a twist today. CNN has learned that the U.S. military in conjunction with the Central Intelligence Agency has a series of six retouched photographs and artist renditions of Saddam Hussein, how they think he might look now that he has spent several weeks on the run.

These pictures are being distributed to the 4th Infantry Division and Task Force 20, the units that are in northern Iraq patrolling, conducting raids, looking for Saddam Hussein.

At the moment, the photographs are not being distributed publicly, but I can tell you that we have seen one of them and it shows a rendition of what a very haggard Saddam Hussein might look like. We have not been given it for distribution. We don't have it in our possession, but we have, indeed, seen it.

Now, we are also told, in addition to this one we've seen where he looks haggard, an indication of what troops might be on the lookout for. There are others that show him with a beard, with no mustache, and with varying degrees of gray hair because, of course, the pictures that the world has seen of Saddam Hussein for last many decades has been that of a man with jet black hair. And the belief is a man of his age with jet black hair probably has a little assistance from hair dye and he wouldn't have had a chance to have done that while he was on the run.

Now, the reason all of this is being distributed to the troops is they also believe, based on information, and based on some assessments they have from a profiler that they are using, that Saddam Hussein might be using civilian vehicles to move around and avoid U.S. checkpoints.

And one other interesting detail we now know that his sons did the same thing before they were killed. We have been told and confirmed that Uday and Qusay Hussein were moved around in a garbage truck in the days before they were killed -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: All right, Barbara Starr with the latest there from the Pentagon. Thank you. We'll continue to follow the story.
