KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: We've been talking about the blood and sweat in Iraq. Another U.S. soldier is dead after driving another yet improvised explosive device, just west of Baghdad. It's not just the heat that's got the Saddam's inner circle sweating, after another U.S. raid in Tikrit.
CNN's Jane Arraf on the phone with us now from Tikrit with more -- Jane.
JANE ARRAF, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Heidi, one of the people involved in this race, Lieutenant Colonel Steve Russell, tell us that it is the former chief of staff of the Republican Guard they've nabbed, along with another person, and I quote, "they were very excited to get." Now, these are not top, top-level officials, not on the deck of cards, but they are among, he says, the former chief of staff. In any case, among the top 55 most wanted after that initial list of people whom they were looking for. Now, he says these were grabbed in a raid by about 200 soldiers believed to be -- although he won't say -- they are believed to be supported by special forces.
Now, they are zeroed in on about 20 houses south of Tikrit, he says, and in a three-hour raid, they captured those two quite high- level people along with 12 others whom they're interrogating right now -- Heidi.
PHILLIPS: All right, Jane Arraf. Actually, it's Kyra, but we appreciate that report. We'll continue to check in with you from Tikrit.
