MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: A West Virginia sheriff says he's contacted agents from the D.C.-area sniper hunt. At a news conference here a short time ago seen here live on CNN, Sheriff Dave Tucker would not rule a string of recent slayings as the work of a copycat killer. The three fatal shootings in the last eight days bear eerie similarities to the sniper spree last fall that paralyzed the nation's capital.
CNN's Art Harris in Charleston, West Virginia with the latest -- Art.
ART HARRIS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Miles, just over an hour ago, as you said, Sheriff Dave Tucker told reporters he expects to catch a killer soon.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
SHERIFF DAVE TUCKER, KANAWHA COUNTY, W. VA.: We do have 100 leads and every lead is being covered. During this, as I mentioned leads, there are suspects arrived through this investigation, and we are actively pursuing those.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
HARRIS: They're also -- they're also pursuing a dark colored pickup truck, Miles, one that they thought at first was black, they now believe it could be dark blue, maroon, and could be driven by an overweight white male. They think it's a Ford F-150 and they are also believing that the driver, the shooter, is someone local or familiar with the area because he would have to know the roads between the shooting sites. They're country roads, narrow, two-lane blacktops.
Also the sheriff told people today that they should be very careful.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
TUCKER: Know your surroundings, being able to look, being able to retain, and -- but don't stop what you're doing. Now, with that said, because these happened at a certain time of night, make sure when you do -- when you do go out that you go in with somebody else. Don't go alone.
(END VIDEO CLIP) HARRIS: There were funerals for two of the victims today, Jeanne Paton, mother of a 14-year-old boy, and Oakey Meadows, 26, an Air Force veteran, who had a 3-year-old son. His name was Isaiah, and he had "Isaiah" tattooed on his arm. Family members says his son has been asking for his father -- Miles.
O'BRIEN: Art, have you had much of a chance to just to talk to the people on the street in Charleston, as it were? What's the mood?
HARRIS: Miles, we've been to all the shooting scenes. We've talked to people gassing up, and they're definitely look looking over their shoulders. Husbands don't want to let wives go out by themselves. They're going as families, and they're gassing up during the daytime, making sure that if they can avoid it, not to fill up their cars at night -- Miles.
O'BRIEN: CNN's Art Harris, Charleston, West Virginia, thanks very much.
