KYRA PHILLIPS, ANCHOR: A Kentucky woman got the surprise of her life when she tried to collect on her dead husband's Social Security. Listen to this.
Lisa Siersie (ph) with affiliate station WLEX reports Glenda Rich doesn't know what to believe, now that her long-lost husband seems to have resurrected in another state.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
GLENDA RICH, DISCOVERED DEAD HUSBAND WAS LIVING: He kissed me on the cheek and told me he loved me and that was the last day I seen him.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE, WLEX CORRESPONDENT: That was September 3, 1977. The then 20-something Curtis Stanley Rich left London, his wife and his three young children to find work in Ohio. His family never saw him again.
RICH: And he just dropped off the face of the earth.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: So in 1985 the struggling mother of three faced her worst fear.
RICH: It states in here that my husband, he's declared dead, Curtis Stanley Rich.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: She had her missing husband declared legally dead so her children could receive survivor's benefits. They did. And this past February, when Rich turned 50, she was eligible for her husband's Social Security benefits. But instead of a check, she received the surprise of her life.
RICH: She said, "We found your husband."
I said, "You found my husband?"
And she said, "Yes." She said, "Could you identify a picture if I showed it to you?"
I says, "I think I could."
And when she showed me the picture, I said, "No, that can't be my husband."
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Still ineligible for benefits, Rich refuses to believe a man working since 1999 under her husband's name is really her husband.
RICH: I need more proof. I need more proof than two Social Security people telling me Ms. Rich, this is your husband.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
PHILLIPS: Wow! Well, as you heard, Mrs. Rich insists that she needs more proof. Did the husband and father abandon the family in 1977 or did someone steal a dead man's identity? Stay tuned.
